The everyday life aboard the Pelican is influenced by changes: changes of plans and changes of destinations. As things like the wind arent 100% predictable we are sometimes simply unable to go into the direction we want to go.
At first, we unexpectedly went from Costa Rica to Panama, because the food we had ordered in Puerto Limón wasn’t delivered. Right now, we are on a course which, if we stick to it, will lead us straight to Mexico, even though thats not part of our plan. As the wind is coming from the northeast and we have to go to the northeast, it keeps pushing us into the wrong direction.
And since we are a sailing ship and not a power vessel, we dont have an engine strong enough to push against wind and waves towards our next destination, which is a place called Cien Fuegos on the southern side of Cuba.
In Cuba, we will do a cycling tour and hopefully visit Havanna. The information on when we will arrive there changes from happy meeting to happy meeting, because as a sailing vessel we depend heavily on the weather and have to adjust to its changes.
Anyhow, were still planning to arrive in Cuba, it might just take longer than expected. I personally like these changes very much because we always get surprised with cool new places.
After we had gotten the new updates for the route, we had our happy hour and like I often do, I joined Christian and Robert while they were on watch. As I’m Red Watch now, I had free time for the rest of the day and tried to do some of my school stuff.
After looking at my history book for about 15 minutes, I decided that sleeping is more important and went to bed. When I woke up it was already 18:00 o’clock and time for dinner.
The dinner was very good, even though it was a little bit difficult to eat. This is because we are sailing again instead of motoring and the ship is heeling very much.
I’m looking forward to the breakfast tomorrow and I like the fact that we won’t have school, because its Sunday. But before I can go to bed, I still have 4 hours of Watch until midnight, during which we hopefully sail some nautical miles into the right direction to get to Cuba.
Goodnight and be grateful that your home isn’t heeling in such a way that you feel like you’re walking to the top of the Teide a second time, when you just want to get something to drink.
