Arrival in Mindelo

I started the morning with breakfast with Ella and Kyrill. We had oatmeal, yummy 😋 Doing the dishes is always exhausting, but with music and the right people, it’s fun.

After breakfast, we arrived in Mindelo (Cape Verde). The sea outside the bay was rough, but after we let the anchor down, everything was calmer. Everyone was really excited to finally arrive here and wanted to get to land.

But first…

Our food delivery arrived and we had to store everything on board. It’s always a challenge to find space for everything, but we tried to make it work. Now we have a lot of fresh new food on board for nice future dinners.

When we were finished (after three hard hours), we shuffled into the Marina of Mindelo for free shore leave. Reinhard did a good job navigating through the many boats in the harbor.

After arriving, the new medic Christian was introduced to us. He seemed very kind, but we are already missing Jakob (our now old medic). 😓

We started to walk around the beautiful village. We were searching for postcards, bracelets, a supermarket and food.

We were excited to explore a new place and get in touch with a new culture. Even though we are here in Africa, we can also see the Portuguese influence and we can recognize a little European touch.

There are a lot of colorful houses, palm trees and a really peaceful vibe. Everyone was surprisingly nice and welcoming. We also visited a market and a fish market and people always want to sell you something.

And because we are soon leaving for the Atlantic crossing, we had to pay the supermarket a visit, as mentioned. Besides chips, chocolate and cookies, the others also bought Coca-Cola. We’ll see if this will all fit in our little closets or find space in the fridge.

But we have to be prepared for:

• Our reading sessions on the foredeck
• Late-night talks
• Night watch with an upcoming hunger
• And the case that the backstaff decides to make polenta again…

Then we needed a break and had some fries at a restaurant at the Marina. The sun was setting ☀️ and we were all very content.

After that, we headed back to our lovely Johnny in the dark. And the crew laughed at our groceries. ☺️

Back in the kitchen, we made wraps for dinner- very delicious! Then many of us sat down in the mess room and finished writing postcards or letters to family or friends, because we can give them to Jakob for free to send. We finished this nice day like that.

And tonight we slept in the hammocks. It was a bit windy, but we all had a very good sleep. Greetings to everyone, love you all!!! 😘
