Today started just like the previous days, with a great breakfast at our hostel. We ate the same delicious croissants and drank the same slightly underfilled orange juice. Afterwards, the group split into two: One went surfing and the other explored the city and its history.

I chose surfing, but I’m sure the other program was equally great and interesting. The waves today were excellent and the weather was much better than yesterday, which made us all happy and motivated. We’re all making progress, catching more and more waves each day. However, the bigger waves made it tough to paddle out and we were all ready for a break after nearly two very intense hours.

After another exhausting struggle to get out of our wet, sandy wetsuits, we each received 50 dh (around 5 euros) to buy lunch. That may not sound like much, but it’s enough here – provided you avoid getting overcharged by locals.

In the afternoon, the program was divided by gender: The girls and boys took turns visiting a ‘hammam’, a typical Moroccan sauna. It’s comparable to a steam bath or a regular sauna, but with larger rooms and very hot water that people pour over themselves and others.

The only big difference is the big rooms and that there always is really really hot water standing around and all people keep spilling it around and on top of everybody. The girls went in the afternoon and the boys in the evening.

While the girls were at the hammam, the boys trained for the football game in Cape Verde and played spikeball on the beach. The hammam building consisted of a changing room and three interconnected chambers, each progressively hotter and steamier.

The first was ok, the second already pretty warm and wet and the third one was really hot and steam was so intense that you couldn’t even see properly. Most of us were soaped and massaged by an older man wearing very short shorts, followed by a rinsing and scrubbing from a younger man in slightly longer shorts. Afterwards, while we were changing, we were served some Moroccan tea, which was absolutely delicious.

All of us really felt refreshed and deeply cleaned afterwards. All in all it really was an unknown and unexpected but interesting and cool experience.

Tonight is our last night in the hostel, but we’ll likely spend a few more days on the boat while still in Morocco. This is good because the country really is interesting and we all get used to the differences and the culture.
