Today is just another day at sea in the middle of the Atlantic. The storm we had over the last few days is moving away from us now and we are all very happy that the waves will get weaker, resulting in less stuff flying around and allowing us to go outside when we’re not on watch.

But now, I will tell you more about the galley and the different people you might happen to be with in the galley.

If you ever experience one of the best sentences to wake up to: “Wake up! You’re on Galley duty today!” – without knowing you’d have this honor – it’s not the happiest way to wake up. But the day can get even better depending on whom you get to spend it with in the galley.

We have some great galley chefs with their well-known best dishes and some who are still trying their best:

For breakfast, Sasa always makes the delicious Bribri bread, just as he did today, though sadly I didn’t make breakfast due to my night watch. He learned this recipe from the native Bribri tribe we visited in Costa Rica.

Strate is well known for letting his Bolognese sauce simmer on the stove all afternoon to bring it as close to perfection as possible.

Sonja always manages to add her widely loved tomato-feta salad to the day’s menu.

I’m always trying to make pizza with my father’s recipe, which works better than I would have imagined on a moving ship. Unfortunately, yesterday in my galley, I couldn’t make pizza because Rainer, our most beloved cook, had already decided on making Milchreis (rice pudding) and baked fish with potato salad.

Felipa isn’t the best cook, which has led her to become known for burning rice to the point where many people prefer their instant noodles.

If you manage to end up in the galley with Jakob, you should be very happy because you’ll get extra help from his galley bitch, Sali.

But the galley isn’t just about cooking great dishes, it also involves doing the dishes. With Sonja, you’re probably going to have a full-scale galley rave, which definitely helps provide more motivation for doing the dishes.

Arvid will try to convince you to take many coffee breaks and five-minute breaks, which you shouldn’t overdo, or else your galley duties may never end.

With Malte, the galley might look like a war zone while doing the dishes; it’s really funny until you have to clean up everything.

The dishes are done the fastest with Strate or Sophia, who always push you to break your personal record for the fastest dishes you’ve ever done, resulting in more free time.

A very big thank you goes to Antonio, who will always help with any job you might need assistance with in the galley.

Of course, I couldn’t miss mentioning our semi-professional baker, who makes great bread and even better cakes, especially his apple cake. But Janno isn’t just a great baker – he’s also our best kitchen chef. He makes so many different, amazing dishes that I could have listed him with the other people I specifically associate with a recipe. My favorites were his ceviche, curry and Asian noodles.

As you might have noticed while reading, every galley combination is unique, with its own recipes, music, dishwashing strategies and vibe.
