Today I am going to present you two new members of Ocean College who joined us in Costa Rica.
Elisa, our new deckhand

What’s your name?
Elisa Janina
How old are you?
I am 19.
Where do you come from?
I am from Arlesheim, a suburb from Basel in Switzerland.
Do you have siblings?
Yes I have three brothers: Julian is 21, Ruben is 17 and Salomon is 13.
When did you arrive?
I got to Costa Rica on the second of January. Than I had one free day staying at the language school in San Jose before driving to Golfito to pick you guys up.
What boats have you been sailing/working on so far?
The first time that I was sailing was in 2018/2019 as a student on Ocean College on board of the Pelican. Last autumn I have been working on the Bark Europa for six weeks. On there, I learnt many seemanship skills because we were doing maintenance in a shipyard. And now I’m very excited to be back working on the Pelican.

What is the most interesting fact about your life?
I love sailing even though I get seasick every time.
What are your hobbys at home?
I play volleyball and I love music. I play the saxophone and the piano.
What was the best moment with Ocean College 20/21?
I love the shanty singing and the group energy.
Which countries of the world have you already visited?
Australia, Ireland, Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, Cape Verdes, Morrocco, Saint Vincent, Curacao, Dominica, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, USA, Bermuda, Portugal and Switzerland.

What do you miss on bord of the Pelican?
I miss my family and friends. I miss a table that doesn’t move. I miss to be able to take a shower without having to fear to slip or falling over and also having daylight in my cabin. I miss the sun and the birds in front of my window.
Witch persons on bord are alredy in your heart?
All of you.
Are you going to be seasick?
Yes, I am already seasick.
What is your favorite spot on the Pelican?
On the starboard puking corner there is a black box. It has the perfect size to lay on, is in the shade and there is also wind.

How old are you?
I’m 35 years old.
Were are you from?
I’m from England, at the moment I live in London.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes, I have one brother.
When did you arrive?
On the 9th of January in San Jose.
On which ships have you been before you came to the Pelican?
I went to the Antarctica on the Europa. It’s also a tall ship like the Pelican.
What’s interesting about you?
I travel a lot and I’m learning how to make documentary films.
What are your hobbys?
Travel, dancing, playing the piano and the ukulele, running, wild swimming. My family are from Scotland orginally and I teach Scottish dancing.
What was your favorite moment with us?
That’s tricky but if I had to say one thing it would be our time in the rainforest.
What was the hardest medical situation?
On expedition it was a hand fracture in Antarctica.

What are you missing from home?
My family, friends and good cheese.
What did you do bevor Ocean College and what do you want to do after our journey?
When I’m at home I worked as a GP (general practitioner) and mental health trainer. I’m also an expedition medic and mental health researcher.
And after Ocean College I want to do more travelling and more research.
What do you think about Ocean College and how did you find out about us?
I think Ocean College is a great project and I’m lucky to be with such a lovely group. I found out about it through a friend.
