The Regina Maris, a ship in the middle of nowhere

Today was a crazy day. In my watch in the afternoon, it was rather stressful. At first the crew had to handle the water in the bilge with the bilge pumps not working. Then we had the first smoke in the hallway, because the socket where the spare pump was plugged in started smoking.

Because of that the fire alarm was triggered and the whole crew had to meet at the muster station. When it was clear where the alarm comes from and everyone went back into the messroom we had to clean the heads and showers. Big surprise, our toilets upstairs have overflowed and because that wasn’t enough a big wave spilled into the messroom. After the biggest dirt was cleaned, we had our next problem. In the galley there started the next cable smoking (no cable burn) so for a while there was smoke in the Galley. But no worries, we all are still alive and looking forward to the Azores.

Handovers

We also crossed the middle of the Atlantic today which means we are at the Azores in about five days. Till then, we have to do a lot. Today is the deadline for our applications for the handover, the moment we are all waiting for since the beginning of our journey. So now everyone is working on their applications. As we are arriving in less than four weeks a couple of students are a bit stressed with their preparations for school at home. And if you can’t find someone working in the messroom or being on watch, you can be sure they are sleeping. Maybe you haven’t heard yet. Sleep is the most important thing here on board. Often, we have to make a decision between working and sleeping which is very hard and most of the time we prefer sleeping. I want to thank the crew for doing their work every day and night even when it’s not in their watch time. It’s great to have you on board. The next thanks goes to the galley, because they prepared a premium dinner despite the conditions in the galley today.

A couple of greetings:
