The last week has arrived… six months of sailing round the world, seeing incredible places, meeting lovely people, … it went by so quickly! From a permanent crew’s point of view, it is both joy and sadness.
First the joy: With the handovers that are going strong, we enjoy watching the students work the ship. We can stand back and be proud of what they have accomplished in the last months.
They all have grown into more mature, open-minded and friendly persons. It is amazing to see some of the previously more quiet ones now in charge of a whole group working on deck.
Leaderships skills have grown. When you see the naturally more confident students grow into leaders who are not afraid to ask questions and can hand over the command to somebody else, adults are being born.
Parents will also be very pleased to know that the students are now able (or at least should know how) to cook, do the dishes, clean the toilets, do their laundry … thus they are almost ready for adulthood.
Secretly, we are also in joy to go home. No more 30 teenagers making a lot of noise, no more German rap music, … Yes, silence will be good for the crew.
On this note, it is also sad to know that we will have to say our good-byes soon. Yes, we are tired and we are looking forward to going home, too, but this group will always have a special place in our hearts.
We got to know each student, saw them laugh, cry and grow into more wonderful persons than they already were.
We will miss them all and we hope that we will see them back at sea someday!
On a final note, I would like to take the time to thank all the parents. I admire your courage to send your son or daughter away for six months.
I’m sure it is not easy to miss your child for such a long time and trust somebody else to take care of them.
Thank you for giving us your trust and giving your children the time of their lives!
Ocean College 2018/2019, thank you for an amazing experience!
PS: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag Opa! Ich freue mich darauf euch in ein paar Tagen wieder zu haben. Mama, bitte gib Antje einen Kuss von mir und knuddel sie. Liebe Grüße Lauryn
