During the twelve days of our second Atlantic crossing, we had regulated times for when to wake up. There were inconvenient times like 00:30 or 04:30 and there were always people awake for their watch (at least I hope so 😉 ).

Because of that, the night today was very important for everybody! It was a night when the ship was not rolling, the hatches were open so fresh air could come in, it was completely silent and most importantly, we were allowed to sleep in until 09:30.

There was no breakfast today but a brunch at 10:00 instead. There was coffee, hot chocolate and everything you need for a nice brunch. Eating nice food and drinking something hot while the boat was standing still was very wholesome for us and this brunch was really cool. Esther, Maxim, Jakob and I unfortunately missed all this because we climbed up into the mast in order to take down our squaresail.

It ripped during the first days of our Atlantic crossing, which was very unfortunate because it is our biggest sail.

Luckily, everybody was ready at 12:00 because then we got our phones!! This time the gap between getting our phones was not that big but as this will be the last chance we can call family and friends at home, everybody was looking forward to it.

Today, reaching people at home was way better than the last times we had our phones because the time difference to Germany is only two hours now and not seven like in Costa Rica. Having our normal mobile phone contract made calling other people much easier, as we were not forced to sit in cafés all the time.

Over the last few weeks, we slowly turned our clock forward and we could see the climate change into one that’s similar to the climate at home. This was true in Bermuda too but especially now in the Azores, where we are in the EU again, it starts looking more like home – not that much trash lying around, lanes for bicycles, four different trash bins and so on.

But the most important thing is that we can pay in euros again! The first time in months!

During the seven hours we had our phones, many people enjoyed sitting in a café where the coffee and something small to eat together only cost €2.50. That’s very nice, especially after visiting expensive Bermuda.

All in all, it was a great day – seeing a bit more of the Azores and having contact with family & friends!
