The first night:

…was horrible. Almost everyone slept really badly. How we’ll be able to sleep with seasickness, you may ask? We probably won’t.

In the Morning:

The first whole day started with breakfast at 08:00. Afterwards, we got divided into three groups: Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. These are the watch groups for the next few weeks. Alpha starts at 1-5 p.m., Bravo has from 5 to 9 p.m., and Charlie has from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. In the following hours, we got to know the crew and they taught us the first basics of sailing: How to tie knots, how to set sail and how to pack the sail up again. We fitted and labeled our life vests—well, not everyone; the labeling machine gave up halfway through the process.

In the afternoon:

After lunch, we learned some more basics and were able to see the engine room. After a short break, we separated into our groups again and talked about our group community, setting some ground rules that apply to everyone. Before we had dinner, we made some music with Matthew (one of the crew members) and his Ukulele.

In the evening:

After dinner, Johan explained the strict rules for the voyage, including what we are and aren’t allowed to do. After that, we had free time.

Meanwhile in the Galley:

Today was the first day with galley duty, meaning a few people were selected to help our cook Shell in the kitchen with cooking and cleaning.

What we ate today:

For breakfast, we had porridge with fruits. For lunch, we ate a soup (we don’t really know what kind, but it was delicious) and for dinner we had mashed potatoes, some peas and meat.

Side Facts:

  • Our hanging fruit nets are spilling over and it’s raining apples.
  • We had to restock our toilet paper… with 20 people in the hallway—turns out toilet paper can be dangerous.

Our Highlight of the day:

As mentioned above, when Matthew played his Ukulele and sang (his voice is fabulous).

For the following days, we hope to grow more together as a community and have a beautiful day tomorrow because we will be leaving the harbor.
