It was the middle of the night when I felt the energy flowing in my veins. The coffee I just drank seemed to reveal its power. I stepped outside and suddenly, there was darkness all around me. Just the shimmering stars above me were providing some light. And here I stood in the cold, staring at the horizon. Thinking of the wide and open sea that seemed to be endless always left me shaking. The night dipped the ocean in complete darkness, painted a deep black by the sky.

And so my day begins with the 00:00 to 04:00 night watch.

Hey everybody!

Don’t take the beginning too seriously, I just wanted to start with something catchy. My night watch with Litti, Anna (L.), Yannik (Medic) and our super chill mate Tim was pretty cool, especially because (as always) we took advantage of the one thing only the 00:00 to 04:00 watch is allowed to do at night: Eating. Of course, it is only logical, considering the breakfast we’re going to skip to get enough sleep, but still, eating outside, under hundreds of stars, is definitely one of my favourite things to do at watch.

After setting the (Breitfock), doing the dishes and cleaning up the messroom, I finally could go to bed (Yannik usually doesn’t has watches, but we adopted him).

At the 00:00 to 04:00 watch, Tim came up with some creative names for our galley. Here are three examples: Lotusbrutze, Fetttempel and Speckbude.

I couldn’t believe it. Our Medic, Yannik, hasn’t been introduced to you, although he has been on board since Costa Rica. So let’s do a super late introduction:

Yannik

  • Full name: Yannik Jänicke
  • Age: 26
  • Job: Notfallsanitäter
  • Hometown: Karlsruhe
  • Favourite colour: pastel colours, royal blue
  • I would describe myself as: zynisch, humorvoll, kreativ
  • Nicknames the students gave me (I hate them all): Jay Jay, Yakari, Yanni, Gigi, Doctor Jänicke
  • 3 words I often use: so, cringe, wild
  • Sentence I use here the most: Ich bin kein Arzt!
  • Favourite food: Döner
  • Favourite snack: Waffelröllchen mit Schokolade, Maltesers
  • 3 things I wouldn’t want to miss: Kamera, Pizzaofen, Retro-Zimmerlampe
  • Special hobbies/interests: Lost Places, fahre in Karlsruhe im Schlossgarten die Dampflok, meine Zimmerpflanzen (Monstera-Sammlung)
  • One of my favourite movies: Soul (from Disney)
  • A situation that enraged me: Als ich nach 6 Stunden (freiwilliger) Backschaft in Ruhe den Sonnenuntergang genießen wollte und mir plötzlich laut „Scurr“ im Sound einer Möwe direkt ins Ohr gekreischt wurde.
  • Biggest challenge on board: Duschen im Sturm
  • What I would like to change: nicht mehr seekrank zu sein
  • Fun fact: Mein finanzielles Grab war mein für 7 Jahre bestehendes Seewasser-Aquarium & ich habe 3 Verkehrsampeln zuhause.

Yannik is our current medic here on board and is going to stay with us until the Azores. He’s been busy in emergency service for eight years now. His girlfriend, Nicola, has got the same profession and is at the moment the Medic on the Regina Maris. He loves to photograph with his fancy camera and drone and he’s really, really good at it. You don’t believe it? Here’s a selection of his best shots.

After dinner, we played „Die Werwölfe vom Düsterwald“ in our own edition. Welcome to Pfiffeli am Kotzen, a small village in the countryside where the villagers are prepared to see some blood. Malte took the part of the storyteller and led us through the game with a creative story.

Our mayor, Herr Sumpf (Noam), guaranteed us a town without werewolves but died one day later due to his relationship, so Thorsten (a 53-year-old ex-general aka Yannik) became our next mayor. In the end, the village won against the werewolves, which strangely all sat to my left and right. Even Remo, one of our mates, joined us for the round.

As members of the Bread-Baking Team, Jana and I spent part of the evening making the dough for the bread for tomorrow.

The evening turned out to be rather full of program. We were allowed to watch a movie (in English, of course) and choose „The Truman Show“.

Truman is a man „just“ living his regular life. What he doesn’t know: The whole world is watching him. Every step he takes, everything he does is being recorded, 24 hours a day. He’s growing up in a fake world, which was only built for him. All people are actors and everything he does is under the control of the TV show production. But one day, he starts to wonder about all the strange things that are happening…

In my opinion, the movie was really interesting, especially from a psychological perspective. All in all, the movie was a great finish to the evening.

Thanks for reading and good night!

Greetings:
