In the summer of 2027, we will sail with 27 students aboard the Johann Smidt for a year abroad unlike any other:

School around the world

The one-year circumnavigation of the globe combines the proven learning content of Ocean College with real experiences at sea. The world’s oceans become our classrooms and foreign countries turn into places of cultural learning.

The World Voyage

Atlantic

Our journey begins along the west coast of Europe and leads through the Bay of Biscay to Cape Verde. From there, we sail across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and Central America.

Pacific

After crossing the Panama Canal, we head west across the Pacific Ocean—past the Galapagos Islands, through French Polynesia and Melanesia, and on to Australia. This is where we spend our longest stay on land: we explore Australia overland from the east to the west coast and reboard in Albany.

Indian Ocean

We then cross the Indian Ocean towards Mauritius and South Africa, sailing via St. Helena, Brazil, and the Azores back to Europe.

As always at Ocean College, there is no fixed route.
Wind, weather, and sustainable sailing determine our course.

The Johann Smidt and her crew have accompanied Ocean College on several Atlantic crossings and are an integral part of our fleet.
As a robust, seaworthy sailing ship, she offers safety, space to live and learn, and the ideal platform for our educational work at sea.

Who is the world voyage for?

Our offer is aimed at students aged 15+ who want to learn outside the classroom, embrace challenges, and are ready to commit to community, nature, and responsibility.


School type doesn’t matter. Motivation does.
