General

After being almost five months on the Pelican it is safe to say, that more or less everyone is experienced enough to fulfill the daily tasks within the ships routine and to maintain the ships safety. Nevertheless, there was always a strict division in the tasks between being a student, a watch leader or the professional crew. Everyone had their own and important role.

But being so near the end of Ocean College, it is tradition that this system changes (even only for two weeks). Not only to give the students more responsibility over their actions, but to use their knowledge and to train their leadership abilities.

The Handover

The last two weeks will be defined by the so called Handover. In this time the students will take part in the ships daily routine as the captain, the first mate, the second mate, the bosun, the bosuns mate, the engineer, the cook as well as the medic. In preparation for that the students should inform themselves over the different tasks, which come with the several professions.

Being well informed the student is asked to applicate for one of this positions by choosing their first and their second choice, while adding a small explantation next to it. If one of them decides to become captain, they will be offered a job interview with the particular person, who is currently on this position (and the teachers).

Even though we gained a lot of knowledge these last months, we have time from Bermuda until the Azores to specialize the knowledge of our chosen profession with the particular crew member in order to maintain a high level of safety. And to reassure that our arrival date won’t be later than the 28th, when some of us is altering the course.

How is it working?

With 32 students and only eight professions it is more than obvious, that there has to be more than one student on each position. But having ten captains at the same time would also not be ideal. Therefore we split again into four Watches with eight persons each (Course, Topsail, T´Gallant, Royal), but by staying in the three watch system.

One of the watches maintain the ships daily routine for three days, while the others are having the normal watch routine. The real Officers of the watch are attending the watch, but will only interfere when the ships or a person’s safety are in danger. To support the students and to ensure, that the tasks are done properly, the watchleaders will be given the position of a safety person, who will overlook the whole situation. Therefore the watches have to select a watchleader within their watch.

Preparation time

At the moment everyone is having a thought about what position would suit them and who will be in which watch. Until today, the arrival date in Bermuda, they had the opportunity to hand in their application. The next two weeks will decide who will be what.

Are you going for a position with a lot of navigational tasks or are you more interested in preparing food for more than 40 people? No matter what they choose, it will definitely define them and their leadership skills. Having the strict sea routine these last days, this change will add a bit of an adventure to our last weeks on the Pelican.

Abschied von Costa Rica

Von uns hätte wohl niemand gedacht, dass es dann doch so schnell zu dem Zeitpunkt kommt, wo wir wieder an der Grenze stehen, doch diesmal aus Costa Rica raus anstelle von reinwollen.

Wenn man am Anfang dieser sechs Monate steht, ist es unvorstellbar, dass man irgendwann an dem Punkt angekommen ist, wo drei Monate vorbei sind und das Abenteuer Costa Rica beginnt.

Costa Rica symbolisiert die Mitte dieser Reise und gleichzeitig läutet das Ende dieser drei Wochen auch unsere Rückreise an. Selbstverständlich ist mir bewusst, dass die verbleibenden elf Wochen, wie auch die vergangenen Wochen, wieder Abenteuer bedeuten.

Dennoch lässt die zeitliche Nähe der Ankunft in Amsterdam mich immer mehr an zu Hause denken.

Doch um nicht den Abschied zu fokussieren, lasse ich uns nochmal unseren Aufenthalt Revue passieren, um euch daheim einen kleinen Einblick unserer Eindrücke zu geben.

Was ist dein persönliches Highlight in Costa Rica?

• Die völlig andere Kultur der Bribris kennenlernen zu dürfen. (Luise)
• Der Supermarkt auf der Busfahrt zur costaricanischen Grenze in Panama. (Rosa)
• Die Expi-Wanderung zum Vulkankratersee. (Paulina)
• Die Wanderung zum Wasserfall in der Expi-Gruppe. (Nele)
• Das Surfen in Jacó. (Falk)
• Die Wasserfälle bei Dominicalido. (Friedrich)
• Auf jeden Fall die Lodge der Bribris und Jacó mit dem Surfen und die ganzen Freiheiten, die wir da hatten. (Ben)

Was war für dich am unerwartesten hier in Costa Rica?

• Das wir jeden Bus auf der Expi bekommen haben, nur nicht den wichtigsten am Ende. (Karo)
• Gar nichts, mich kann nichts überraschen. (Jael)
• Dass das Haus bei den Bribris keine Wände hatte, wo wir geschlafen haben. (Fred)
• Der Mangel an englisch sprechenden Leuten. (Philipp)

Was nimmst du aus den zwei Wochen mit?

• Die Leute sind sehr nett und angenehm, was wahrscheinlich an der Kultur liegt. Auch habe ich viel über die Herstellung von Kaffee und Kakao gelernt und einfach einen generellen Einblick in die Kultur der indigenen Bevölkerung bekommen. (Emma)
• Generell habe ich ein bisschen über Organisation gelernt und wie man das macht. Und ganz viel über Früchte. (Friedrich)
• Dass ich großen Respekt vor den Leuten habe, die wie die Bribris arbeiten und leben. (Fred)

Wie viele Moskitostiche hattest du?

• So viele, dass man die nicht mehr zählen kann. (Emma)
• Bevor ich aufgehört habe zu zählen, weil es immer mehr wurden, am rechten Unterschenkel 22 und am linken 27. (Luise)

Ich denke ich kann im Namen aller sagen, dass Costa Rica eines der Highlights dieser Reise ist und es schade ist, dass sich dieser Teil nun zu Ende neigt. Trotzdem sind wir alle gespannt, was uns noch erwartet und freuen uns, wieder mit der Pelican of London vereint zu sein und die Weiterreise zu beginnen!

Having 47 people on board (who would believe it) leads to a tremendous amount of rubbish. Disposal and correct storage are of great importance for life on board. Space is one of the various precious resources. Especially for long crossings like the current Atlantic crossing, dealing with our resources keeps the vessel and the routine functioning while being away from the shore.

Disposal of Garbage

Minimizing the amount of garbage to the absolute bare minimum is the first goal in dealing with disposal. Not only is space on board limited, but also getting the garbage ashore comes with certain conditions depending on the area. Cape Verde, for example, has specific restrictions when dealing with garbage disposal from tall ships. When using their service to dispose of garbage, they charge 10 euros for every bag. Having the minimum amount of garbage isn’t only due to space reasons but also caused by financial considerations.

For getting the garbage ashore, the term used on the Pelican is the garbage run. With nearby garbage disposal areas, it is either brought on land by foot or with the rib. To ensure recycling, the garbage gets separated into food waste, tins and cans, hard plastic, and everything else. Unfortunately, recycling isn’t as common as it should be, and due to the lack of diverse bins, it gets disposed of in the same bin, not considering the content.

Marpol

Depending on the area, certain types of garbage are allowed to be disposed of in the sea. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, short the Marine Pollution Regulations (MARPOL regs), regulates the rules for what ships can and cannot discharge at sea. There are regulations dealing with oil, sewage, garbage, and air pollution.

Food waste, which can pass through a net with mesh no larger than 25 mm, can be disposed of outside of special areas and Arctic waters when being 3 or more nautical miles away. Within special areas and Arctic waters, it is permitted to dispose of it while being 12 or more nautical miles away from shore (in our case, this includes water from cleaning).

Garbage special areas are parts of the world where the impact of throwing waste overboard would be higher than in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by land and with a delicate balance of marine life that we need to preserve, which is why disposal is minimized. Examples of these areas are the Mediterranean Sea area, Baltic Sea area, Red Sea area, Gulfs area, and the Antarctic area.

Next to food waste, goods such as cargo residues not contained and contained in washwater, cleaning agents and additives contained in cargo hold washwater, cleaning agents and additives in deck and external surfaces washwater can be disposed of in specific parts of the sea.

Garbage Storage

To ensure that the garbage is stored properly, while keeping the space needed to a minimum, the correct way of disposal is essential. Milk packages have to be opened until they’re flat; garbage like plastic packages needs to be compacted, and tins are getting crushed. From a total of 15 bags, we achieved to store the same quantity of garbage into 10 bags, only because of the correct way of storing it (even though we had to open every single bag and deep dive our hands in it).

Hygiene on Board

For dealing with the bags, a certain amount of hygiene should be offered. Food waste is only allowed in the food waste bin, and every package and bottle has to be washed out, so that there are no leftovers in it. You can imagine that after two weeks on the Atlantic and with the bags being in the sun all day, food leftovers can easily turn into something that isn’t welcomed on board.

To maintain a high level of hygiene, eating in the lower accommodation is forbidden, despite the fact that we already have little pests on board (for example, the cockroaches in cabin 10). You see how important it is to keep everything clean? Not only do we do heads and showers every day, but we also sweep and mop the green mile and the galley, vacuum the mess room, and do point-of-contact cleaning. In addition to this, we clean the deck, the cabins, the saloon, the wheelhouse, and the coms room every Sunday during happy hour.

Not only are we trying to prevent parasites, but also keeping everyone healthy and stopping diseases from spreading. So please, dear parents, don’t believe your child when they say they can’t clean properly; they can or they have learned it until they’re back (same with the laundry).

Hello, wir haben jetzt den 10. Tag der Atlantiküberquerung und wahrscheinlich sind es jetzt noch fünf weitere. Wale und Schildkröten sind oftmals das einzige Highlight des Tages, da jeder Tag den gleichen Ablauf hat und man allmählich das Zeitgefühl verliert. Ich glaube, alle freuen sich, bald mal wieder an Land zu kommen.

Ein kleines Ständchen

Wer nicht heute um Punkt 12 Uhr nachts durch ein schallendes „Happy Birthday“ geweckt wurde, war dann aber so richtig wach, als auf der Dachterrasse das Lied zum Frühstück noch einmal angestimmt wurde (dies sollte aber nicht das letzte Ständchen sein). Grund hierfür war der 18. Geburtstag von Paulina. Zu diesem Anlass gab es nicht nur eine Luftballon-Girlande, eine Karte mit allen Unterschriften und ein bisschen Kuchen, sondern auch 2 Avocados zum Frühstück. So war die gute Laune am Morgen schon vorprogrammiert.

Medersa Ben Youssef

Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass es heute zurück nach Essaouira geht, starteten wir relativ früh in den Tag und besuchten gegen 10:00 die Medersa Ben Youssef, eine ehemalige Koranschule im Herzen Marrakechs.

Diese bot noch einmal einen schönen Abschluss und rundete unseren 3-tägigen Ausflug in Marrakech gelungen ab. Mit ihrer traditionellen architektonischen Ausarbeitung außen wie innen war sie ein echtes Highlight für das Auge. Der bemerkenswerte Zustand ist nicht zuletzt König Mohammed dem VI. zuzuschreiben, der die Instandsetzung verordnete.

Tanzparty

Für das Mittagessen ging es wie gestern zu einem Stand in den Souks, sodass wir uns ein letztes Mal durch die engen Gassen mit Ständen zu beiden Seiten durchschlängelten. Der von gestern bekannte Getränkestand versorgte uns heute nicht nur mit Limonaden und Shakes, sondern war auch offen für unsere Musikvorschläge. Von Bibi und Tina bis Cro war alles dabei. Neben einem weiteren Geburtagslied wurde bei allen Liedern lautstark mitgesungen, und sogar kleine Tanzeinlagen haben nicht gefehlt. Ein altes Sprichwort besagt: Wo ist die Party? Hier ist die Party!

Alte Bekannte

Mit Filmen, Musik und ein bisschen Schlafen vergingen die etwa vier Stunden von Marrakech nach Essaouira auch wie im Flug. Nach der lauten Großstadt wirkte Essaouira wie ein ruhiger Gegenpol, und nicht wenige hatten ein vertraut heimisches Gefühl, als wir wieder an der gleichen Stelle abgesetzt wurden und den altbekannten Weg zu unserem Riad einschlugen. Um nach der Busreise ein wenig zu akklimatisieren, stand uns eine Stunde Free Shore Leave zur Verfügung.

Neben vielen Köstlichkeiten und dem ein oder anderen zusätzlichen Stück im Gepäck war dieser wie immer sehr erfolgreich. Nicht zu guter Letzt wurde auch hier mindestens zwei Mal für Paulina gesungen. Über den Tag hinweg ist es nun zu mehreren Ständchen gekommen, und der Grund hierfür sind Schüler:innen, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht haben, 18 Mal für das Geburtstagskind zu singen. Und ich muss schon sagen, dass sie ihre Aufgabe sehr gut machen, wenn sie mitten auf den Straßen Essaouiras anfangen, „Happy Birthday“ zu singen.

Gesungener Abschluss

Das Abendessen fand wie immer in einem nahegelegenen Bistro statt, sodass wir nach diesen ereignisreichen Tagen in Marrakesch einen eher entspannten Abend vor uns hatten. Doch ganz geplättet waren wir dann doch nicht, und das Lied „Happy Birthday“ in dreifacher Ausführung konnte lautstark gesungen werden.

Als Abschluss des heutigen Tages erwartete uns im Riad dann noch eine Auswahl an Gebäck, die selbstverständlich bis auf den letzten Krümel erfolgreich vernichtet wurde. Zu guter Letzt wurden die fehlenden Durchführungen von „Happy Birthday“ angestimmt, jedoch wurde am Ende nicht nur 18 Mal, sondern ganze 19 Mal gesungen. Die Generalprobe für nächstes Jahr wäre damit dann auch schon erledigt. Somit war es nicht nur ein gelungener, sondern auch insgesamt ein gesungener Abschluss.
