What happens at night…

Just because you have often heard about our daytime life doesn’t mean that we get a break at night, because we’re always sailing 24/7.

That means we also have watch from 20:00 to 00:00, from 00:00 to 04:00 and from 04:00 to 08:00. And in those four hours on watch, lots of funny things besides our common duties can happen.

As you know, our watch system includes four positions: rudder, bridge, lookout port and lookout starboard. Every half hour we change positions, but when you’re lucky, you’re supposed to do the „Flötentörn“ — the most „exhausting“ job, because you literally have nothing to do.

During night watch we often take this chance for a little nap. But after that it’s often even harder not to think of your cozy cabin or to keep your eyes open.

So to stay awake we developed a few techniques.

Number one: Looking at the sea and sky

While you are lookout, you don’t only look for mermaids, but also for ships, fish, dolphins and a phenomenon that has followed us since we crossed the Biscaya: Glowing plankton. When you see the little sparks in the waves, the world looks a little less tired and more magical.

Also a pretty thing to look at is the night sky. When there are no clouds you can see the Milky Way, Orion, the Big Dipper and shooting stars. That is very impressive.

Another reason to stay awake: The flying visitor

Last night, the B-Watch was very lucky and could welcome a flying visitor: A flying fish that had found its way onto our Achterdeck. Charlotte will describe this exciting moment to you:

„Well, my position was on the rudder and out of nowhere I heard an animal nearby. At first I thought it was an insect because I heard wings fluttering. I shouted to our watchleader: Roque! Watch out, I think there is an insect! With big steps he came to us and put his flashlight on. Now we could see that it was a flying fish. Roque grabbed it and put it back into the water.“

With so much action also comes hunger. That’s why the third strategy of last night was:

The „Lasagne-Törn“

Another reason to leave the dream world behind and to return to the here and now is the “Nachtwächter”, the midnight snack. Normally, we find the good old cheese sandwiches in the fridge, but last night was special.

Because we had lasagna yesterday evening, the night watches could enjoy lasagna as a snack. Our watch got creative and invented the Lasagne-Törn as a replacement for the Flötentörn.

I can tell you: Cold leftover lasagna tastes so much better at night.

Other occupations

Sometimes the night watches are also supposed to cut eleven kg of potatoes, prepare a birthday cake and put it in the oven, or form burger buns (which turned out as little breakfast scones). This is a pleasure for everybody, especially when we get fresh baked burger-bun-scones for breakfast.

There is also a lot of trouble when it comes to waking up the next watch or everyone for breakfast at 07:00. I don’t want to elaborate on waking up the others, but most of the time it’s very funny and includes music, confused people and sometimes water.

When there is no end of the watch in sight, sometimes the only helpful thing is singing or a big hug. Not everyone is able to talk a lot in the middle of the night, but some of us get the biggest thoughts (greetings to our professor): You will find him discussing the meaning of life or the importance of Christmas socks at 02:13.

Of course, the morning watch is very happy when they hear the galley working hard for our breakfast or when they see the sky getting brighter and the sunrise starts. That’s the sign that the night will be over soon and a new sunny day on the Atlantic can start.
