Setting the sail and getting it down

The day started for most of us at 07:30 with the normal breakfast. We set the Rah topsail at 08:00; it was really hard because we must pull all the ropes by hand.

After that, we got the trysail down and packed it, which was also a lot of work because the sail must be packed with ropes “aus Hanf”. This is because, for setting the sail, you must put the sail on the mast, and for opening it you must bring so much pressure on the sheet that the “Hanf” rope springs.

School

Today we learned verbs and their conjugations in Spanish. In German we played role games and presented them, which was really funny.

Safety training

For lunch at 12:00 we had a really good Bolognese and afterwards it was the weekly safety training at 15:00, where we talked about fire on the ship and what we have to do when such an event happens. We also checked all our life jackets so they are complete if we need them.

“Wasserschlacht”

At 15:30 we did our weekly deep clean and at one point the laundry had to be washed again after the ship was cleaned in every corner. By washing the deck, it gave us a small chance to have a bath party with Roque, Tom, Leopold, Klara and Ylva and afterwards we sunned ourselves on the front deck in nearly 29 °C weather.

Setting the trysail

After dinner at 18:30, a lot of us on deck had to set the trysail because the ship was rolling too much without the sail. That means getting the sail out of the “Segelkoje”, getting it out of the sail sack, putting it on the mast and afterwards finally setting the sail.

To be able to break the “Hanfseil” that is on the sail, we must bring a lot of pressure on the “Schoten”, and after the rope springs we will set the sail correctly to the wind.

Lost and Found

At 19:30 we auctioned all the things that landed in the lost and found box and today you could only pay if you would bake something for the snack box. This was fortunate for us because the snack box is empty. After all that, my watch and I went on night watch, where we were able to see 25 shooting stars in 15 minutes.
