What was inside your first package of your Advent calendar?

A year without the Advent period would be like …

Sophie: It would be like skipping the winter.

Ellena: It would be like skipping family time.

Liv: It would be like the earth stops moving and you skip the bad but cozy weather and for a month you skip the time with your family.

Leopold: It would be like throwing up with “Zwieback” after.

Nepomuk: It would be like a hike without arrival.

Emil: It would be like skipping the winter.

Helene: It would be like summer without sun.

Birte: It would be very sad, because it is the best season.

Ylva: It would be like a bed without a mattress.

Josi: It would be like a summer without cherries.

Helena: It would be like Ocean College.

Tom: It would be sad.

Mathilda: It would be like a year without summer.

What is a tradition in your home which isn’t possible on a ship and which you will miss?

Sophie: I think decorating the Christmas tree on the morning of Christmas with my family.

Ellena: What I miss most is Bigos.

Liv: Cutting down the Christmas tree, Christmas market.

Leopold: Picking a Christmas tree.

Nepomuk: “Adventssingen.”

Emil: That Santa Claus comes on the 6th of December.

Helene: Decorating the Christmas tree with my sister.

Birte: Advent wreath, eating “Schmalzkuchen” at the Christmas market with my family.

Ylva: Lunch break at the Christmas market.

Josi: Making a campfire during midwinter.

Helena: A family weekend at the Christmas market.

Tom: Decorating the Christmas tree.

Mathilda: Rolling the dice at Christmas to decide who is allowed to open a present.

It’s crazy: We are all fighting against skipping Christmas and the Advent season. It is such a beautiful season! The time of sociable gatherings and contemplation. And at the same time we all have problems getting into the Christmas mood.

Without constant rain and slush. Without Christmas markets and mulled wine. Without services, Christmas trees, burning candles. Without enough biscuits, because it is practically impossible to bake in large quantities while the Backschaft is working. Actually, we enforce all that on our daily life, on our ship, on our environment. All the Christmas stuff doesn’t fit in!

Here, it’s the first time in our lives before year’s end in which we aren’t influenced. Nobody or nothing exemplifies Christmas: No publicity, no stories from your friends, no decorated shop windows.

But now, I have to return to the beginning: We don’t want to give up all the stuff that waits for us in the next 24 days. It’s a nice feeling to maintain traditions from home, to have a constancy during this part of the six months.

I’m sure several things will take place differently than at home; we will often have to search for new solutions for how we can implement our customs. But there is one thing that would be everything but challenging: Spending time with our sweethearts! Here, that’s possible with 36 people 24/7.

Tom: Hi, ich habe heute den ersten Fisch gefangen, das war mega aufregend! Hab euch alle lieb, das erste Türchen war mega toll! Ich hoffe, der Wichtel war auch da, bis bald, habe euch alle mega lieb!

Anne: Hey ihr da draußen! Ich hoffe, ihr hattet gestern einen supi dupi ersten Advent, hoffentlich kein Schietwetter und zu viel Arbeit und vielleicht im Gegensatz zu uns schon Plätzchen! Ich habe den Magen-Darm-Virus seit zwei Tagen endlich besiegt, dafür, passend zum Dezember, macht sich jetzt das Halskratzen breit. Ach ja, das Leben könnte so schön sein … 😉 Ist es zum Glück auch, freue mich schon voll krass auf die Atlantiküberquerung! Mama und Papa, ich habe heute auf den Kap Verden ein Päckchen abgeschickt, ich hoffe, es kommt irgendwie an. Mit Inhalten aus Marokko, benutzt sie, falls sie schlechter werden, bevor ich wiederkomme! Macht es euch nett, schön, besinnlich, … habe euch alle ganz doll lieb 🥰

Munguru: Fröhlichen ersten Advent, vielen Dank für die Briefe nochmal. 1984 ist ein sehr nices Buch und ich bin jetzt im zweiten Teil. Frage mich aber, warum die love Story so SuS ist. Ihr wisst, was ich meine. Sind gerade in Kap Verde angekommen und schlechtes Wetter scheint uns wirklich zu verfolgen, ist halt so, naja. In zwei Tagen machen wir schon die Atlantiküberquerung, schon irgendwie aufregend. Ich vermisse euch und Love aus Afrika❤️

Amalia: Also ich habe nach einem Technikladen gesucht, es gibt keine Möglichkeit, die Sachen vor Martinique zu reparieren, ich habe meine haptischen Bücher alle schon fertig. Das war mein Update, sorry, dass die Elektronik schon kaputt ist!

Helene: Heyyy an alle zuhause! Ich wünsche euch noch einen fröhlichen ersten Advent und hoffe, dass in euren Adventskalendern etwas Schönes drinne war😊. Ella, Deinen Adventskalender habe ich natürlich auch heute ausgepackt und mich sehr gefreut. Bin so gespannt, was da noch alles drin ist, aber auf jeden Fall vielen Dank❤️❤️.
