The long-awaited cell phone day started today after we were allowed to “sleep in” until 07:30. During breakfast it was said that before we could split into our free shore leave groups and start leaving the boat with the shuttle, we still had to do some clean-up work on deck.

It was not only a special day because we got our cell phones back, but also because the new crew came on board today. It consists of our new machinist Robert, Carsten, who replaces one of our old helmsmen, and Robert, who also replaces an old helmsman and last but not least, our new captain, who came on board with his wife named Birte.

Then the shuttles started and the first free shore leave groups left the Johnny. The groups were then immediately allowed to explore where we are anchored. After two weeks of crossing the Atlantic Ocean, this was the first time we had solid ground under our feet.

When the time finally came, we all gathered at the pier at 12:30 and got our cell phones from the teachers. In our heads, we all thought: Finally! But we also noticed that it is very easy to live without a cell phone, because we have all become like a kind of family and have everything on board that we need for a harmonious and beautiful life on board.

Of course, the cell phones didn’t stay untouched. All phones were used for calls with family, friends, etc. Time passed very quickly and our cell phone time slowly came to an end. When it was time to hand them in again, despite the realization that we don’t really need them, we were still a little shocked. But that’s not too bad and belongs to Ocean College.

Now the beach buff was ready to begin. However, this was disturbed by a short but heavy rain shower. But that didn’t stop us from having a great evening on the beach. We ate together, then went swimming and ended the evening with smiles.

(Small note to everyone reading this report while you’re at home in the freezing winter: we are swimming in sunshine with 30 degrees in the Caribbean.)
