Sails up, motor off

Today was the first real start of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The weather could be better, but since it’s not raining nobody is complaining. We set three sails: the Breitfock, the Ratopsegel and the Trisegel. The Breitfock is our Ra sail, the Ratopsegel is a topsail that goes above the Breitfock and the Trisegel is a storm replacement for the mainsail.

The reason we set these sails is that the Breitfock and Ratopsegel are the ideal sails for wind from the aft (the back of a ship), since the boom goes from port to starboard and not front to aft like our other sails.

We set the Trisegel instead of the mainsail so we don’t make a “Patenthalse”. When we accidentally turn when we have our normal sails up, all the sails and booms slam to the other side. This can be dangerous, because if you stand in the way, you won’t be standing there anymore.

We do have safety measures like „Leichenfänger“ and the bowlines, which hold the boom in place no matter what. But still, better to be safe than sorry. The second danger of „Patenthalsen“ is that the sail can rip. If we make a controlled turn, we have the bowlines and Schoten to control the boom and can prevent the ripping of a sail.

Now, back to why we set the Trisegel: the Trisegel is a storm sail, so it is relatively small in comparison to the other sails and this way, if we do make a Patenthalse, it won’t be as dangerous because it is a small and resistant sail.

School starts again

Since we are at sea, the lessons started again. Today our nautical teacher was sick, so we had a bit more free time than usual. Then we had an hour of Spanish with Birte. We discussed colours, weekdays, numbers and the basics of introducing ourselves.

After a quick intermission we had German with Josi; our theme in German at the moment is communication. We discussed a communication model for an hour and did some partner work.

After German we had two hours of self-learn time and then two hours of languages. We can learn our own languages from school in that time. For example, Nepomuk has a Latin group. He helps everybody with their own texts. Then we had a nice movie night with Ocean’s 11.

Sinterklaas

It is the fifth of December. That means it is „Sinterklaas“! I am from the Netherlands and back at home we have „Sinterklaas“ instead of Christmas. „Sinterklaas“ is a man who gives presents to all the children in the Netherlands on his birthday, on the fifth of December.

Every year he comes by boat to the Netherlands from Spain with his helpers, the Pieten. They arrive two weeks before „pakjesavond“ (fifth December) and sometimes come at night through the chimneys of homes to fill the shoes of children with „pepernoten“, „kruidnoten“ and little presents.

„Pepernoten“ and „kruidnoten“ are special cookies for „Sinterklaas“; you can only buy them in the Netherlands around „Sinterklaas“ time. (I brought some with me and everybody loves them.)

For the children who are old enough and don’t believe in „Sinterklaas“ anymore, they have surprises at school and with their families. Surprises are small presents that you hide in something creative you made yourself.

If you know that the person likes tennis, you can make a tennis ball and hide your present in there. You can’t choose for which person you have to make a surprise, so you put your name on a paper and draw another name.

A very important part of „Sinterklaas“ are the poems; you write very bad and funny poems to your family and friends. Most of the time they are a little mean, but that is part of the fun.

And at last, „Sinterklaas“ was real. A long, long time ago. „Sinterklaas“ is just short for Saint Nikolaas, who was a man from Portugal who came to the Netherlands and distributed presents to children. Now he is dead, but his tradition is still alive and loved in the Netherlands.

Fun fact: did you know that every year there is a daily news channel for children where they get updates on how far along „Sinterklaas“ is on his journey to the Netherlands? And every year there is a new story about what goes wrong.

For example, there was a year where all the presents fell overboard. Even as a teen now, me and my friends watch the „Sinterklaasjournaal“ because it is still very funny.

Lieve iedereen,
Sint zat ook dit jaar weer te denken,
Wat hij jullie moest schenken.
Alhoewel ik er dit jaar niet ben,
Ren ik wel naar meebrengsels.
Van foto’s en herinneringen naar Marokkaanse thee,
Ja alles, neem ik mee.
Als ik uitkijk op zee,
En een vliegende vis zie, als een fee.
Denk ik aan de gezelligheid thuis,
En word stil als een muis.
Ik hoop dat het uit te houden is zonder mij,
Volgend jaar ben ik er weer bij.

Amalia: Hallo Mami und Papi wir sind jetzt auf dem Weg über den Atlantik. Vor 2 Tagen habe ich einen Tag in meinem Tagebuch als „Ober toller Tag“ bezeichnet weil wir da mit Schildkröten geschwommen sind und generell super fiel im Wasser waren wir sind sogar vom klüverbaum gesprungen am Abend haben wir alle draußen auf der Terrasse gesessen und beim Sonnenuntergang wraps gegessen. Nun habe ich auch noch ein paar Sachen die ihr mir fileicht nach Martinick schicken könntet: das wären wärmepflaster weil für die Wache sind die eine premium Alternative zum Heizkissen, bastelsachen habe ich ja bereits geschrieben in einem forherigen Bericht. Nun habe ich zum Ende noch einen Verlust zu melden nämlich meine kurze türkisene Hose ist beim Start über den Atlantik von Bord geflogen aber ich habe noch genug kurze Hosen also da brauch ich kein Ersatzt es ist nur etwas schade. Ich hab euch ganz doll lieb fühlt euch gedrückt ❤️❤️

Liv: Hey Mama Hey papa,Hey Topsi, und der rest natürlich auch. Hoffe euch geht es gut. Erst einmal Lg vom großen Teich mit 26,5 grad Wasser Temp. Echt Crazy. Haben das erste mal Leichenfänger gesetzt echt krass dachte die braucht Mann eher in der biskaya aber lieber haben als brauchen. Wollte nur mal kurz Danke sagen die Adwentskalender sind Mega und ich habe jeden Tag riesige freuede ich hoffe ihr habt auch Spaß vermisse den Weihnachtsmacrkt und euch natürlich auch also Hab euch lieb und bis ganz bald… Eure Livviii

Tom: Hey ihr alle hier ist es Mega schön und der Adventskalender ist auch Mega auch wenn es durch das Mega Wetter schwer in die weinachsstimmung zu kommen mir geht es leider körperlich nicht ganz so gut meinem Arm geht’s wieder schlechter und ich bin leicht erkältet ich hoffe euch geht’s gut hab euch Mega lieb schönen Nikolaus morgen bis bald.

Mats: Ich musste heut den Kühlschrank ausräumen – eine richtige scheiß Aufgabe, aber ich bin froh fertig zu sein. Mama danke für den super Adventskalender den du mir gemacht hast. Ich wünsch euch allen einen schönen Nikolaus und einen schönen 2. Advent.
