As our journey is slowly coming to an end and we have seen plenty of big sailing ships which we all build a love for we want to share this passion with you. To bring the ships a little closer to you we thought: Why not just make a ranking of all of them? We have lived on the Johann Smidt for almost six months now and know pretty much everything about it.

As all of us students love our Johnny we will prove you in this ranking why we actually have the best ship and for sure anyone from another ship would say the same about his ship:)

I am gonna talk about everything that makes an old sailing ship special and is interesting for you to hear. The ships that are gonna participate in the ranking are Johann Smidt, Roald Amundsen, Thalassa, Regina Maris, Thor Heyerdahl, Alexander von Humboldt 2, Blue clipper, Très Hombres, Eendracht 2

First category: Messroom

• 1. Thalassa
Really big messroom which gives an absolute bar feeling and looks like a lovely designed living room.
• 2. Regina Maris
Cosy lighting and enough space for everyone. Due to the bull eyes there is daylight all the time and the connection to the galley really convinces.
• 3. Johann Smidt
Absolute center of the ship because of which there is always something going on and daylight comes in. The cushions are really comfortable and due to the table placement you can always have conversations with everyone.
• 4. Blue Clipper
Looks a bit like a small old saloon with leather seats and curtains. Due to big windows you always see the ocean and get nice lighting.
• 5. Alexander von Humboldt 2
Absolutely massive but because of that it gives a school cafeteria vibe and is cold and not very comfortable.
• 6. Thor Heyerdahl
Still can’t believe that this is supposed to be their living room, it’s like a tunnel with stairs in the middle of it. There are neither windows nor enough space for everyone.
• 7. Roald Amundsen
Pretty much like the Thor Heyerdahl but even smaller and less cosy.
• 8. Très hombres
They don’t really have a messroom.

Second category: Cabines

• 1. Blue clipper
Very comfortable and double beds with windows and curtains. Also almost every cabin has a bathroom
• 2. Regina Maris
Due to windows in the ceiling and big beds really luxury.
• 3. Thor Heyerdahl
Big cabins and a lot of space for clothes and to chill in the cabin
• 4. Johann Smidt
Really mixed types of cabins, you get cabins for 4,2,6, and 12 people and most of them have a lot of space to store things.
• 5. Thalassa
Only three people in a cabin and every cabin has their own bathroom. Still kinda boring as you only live with two other people.
• 6. Alexander Von Humboldt
Really big cabins with showers and super much space. But still boring to live only with 1 other person.
• 7. Roald Amundsen
Pretty much similar to the Thor but less space and no windows.
• 8. Très hombres
Have to sleep in wet and bad hammocks.

Third category: Galley

• 1. Alexander Von Humboldt
Massive galley with a dishwasher and enough space for kitchen parties.
• 2. Thor Heyerdahl
Big, in the middle of the ship and on deck so you don’t get seasick easily
• 3. Roald Amundsen
Same as the Thor but more in the back of the ship so there is more movement in the ship.
• 4. Johann Smidt
Quite small but somehow still almost all of the time enough space and the galley is in the middle of the ship
• 5. Thalassa
Big but no good lighting and it somehow still gives claustrophobia vibes
• 6. Blue clipper
Really small as you don’t have to cook for many people
• 7. Regina Maris
Small and not everything works, I can’t imagine having fun while cooking there.
• 8. Très hombres
Absolutely not modern and not even really running water

Fourth category: Deck

• 1. Regina Maris
Lots of space on the main and poopdeck with sitting areas.
• 2. Thalassa
So many sitting areas that you don’t even know where to go.
• 3. Thor Heyerdahl
Red floor looks a bit old but still they have much space
• 4. Roald Amundsen
Lots of blank space but nothing on it to sit
• 5. Alexander Von Humboldt
A lot you can do on the deck but somehow there is nowhere just blank space but everywhere is something
• 6. Johann Smidt
Not much space on the deck but you can chill in the sail storage and our self build bank really convinces
• 7. Blue clipper
Small deck but sitting benches and a cosy look.
• 8. Très hombres
Same here, not much space and everything looks old and broken

Fifth category: Looks/ aesthetic

• 1. Tres hombres
Really old sailing ship that could play in any movie. They have a really cool gallions figure and their old look convinced us
• 2. Regina Maris
Impressive bowsprit and their sails look really special. Also their gallions figure is really cool and the Rar sail gives an extra touch.
• 3. Roald Amundsen
Pirate ship feeling really comes thru here and the fact that it’s à Brigg makes it look even cooler
• 4. Thor Heyerdahl
Three rarsails on the front mast are really cool and three masts just always look cool.
• 5. Johann Smidt
Different than the other ships as it is modern and looks like a really expensive yacht.
• 6. Blue clipper
An old normal looking sailing ship with a cool colour.
• 7. Thalassa
Really old and rosty but due to the length and height still impressive
• 8.Alexander Von Humboldt 2 same problem as the Thalassa but the colour combination looks not good.

Sixth category: Speed
• 1. Johann Smidt
We are the fastest!!
• 2-8 (all the other ships)

Also if this Ranking doesn’t show it that clear, through the love to our ship, it’s clear that our Johnny is the best ship on the entire Atlantic! Lucky us!!!!

To our day: Today was a pretty average day at sea. A lot of people were sleeping, because we didn’t have anything to do. We had good wind, all the sails up and only some big waves. Because of this weather conditions, some people took the opportunity to do some sport on deck. We also trained, to use the „dirty Hand“ an advice to help pulling ropes. After this we had a great dinner with Schnitzel, Kroketten and Krautsalat and everybody loved it!
