Whale watching and groceries

Ship: Johann Smidt
Date: 28.03.2026
Position: Port of Horta, Azores

The biggest animal on the planet

Whales, to be specific the blue whale, are the biggest animals on the planet, so to learn more about this we went to a whale watching tour.
At first we went to a briefing about whales, wich species there are and at what times you can find them at the Azores.

We split up in two groups, at first we saw nothing and then out of nowhere we got a message that the whale spotters had spotted a group of spermwhales not far from our position, we went there and yes, there was a group of spermwhales:)))

After they disappeared to the depts of the sea, we got a message that there were some blue whales six miles from us. We sped to the north east of Faial and made a little stop halfway to look at some fake killerwhales and dolfins who were hunting fish together.

It was beautiful to watch how two so different creatures worked together to survive. After watching for a bit, we sped off to the blue whales and we saw them:))) It started with what looked like a blue submarine, then an eight meter high spray of water and at last the blue whale!

It was really really big and we even saw the big tail of the whale, even tough you only see it 3% of the time when a blue whale dives. After seeing it dive, a second one appeared. We watched them dive for a bit and then went back to the port. On our way back we saw more dolfins, to be specific bottlenose dolfins. We got back and Sophia, Mathilda, Leopold and me had to went directly to the supermarket.

SoSo CoCo

As some of you may know we had the handover yesterday and now we have the responsibility over the ship. Well, we need to eat like every other person. To organize that we had Josi and Helene as Cocos (Cooking coordination) to organize the backschaft and what food we buy in what countries.

Now I am the cook and Sophia is the coordination. I cook a meal a day with the backschaft and Sophia organizes the storage room. I help with organizing most days and Sophia helps with cooking. So we had to organize shopping for food this time. Before the shopping we were very bored and thought, we are a team, why not have a teamname, why not have a teamhandshake?

So now we are called the SoSo CoCo (Sophie & Sophia and Cook & Coordination) our handshake is very funny. Anyways, we went to shop at our big supermarket for fresh food like vegetables, fruit and cheese. We had a lot of fun with Mathilda (the coco for the next trip) and Leopold (the breadbaker). For dinner we cooked Tortelinni with cream sauce:)

Have a good good day, I had a wild wild wild day. This is my last Tagesbericht. Thank for traveling with Deutsche Bahn:)

Sophie
