Discovering a small Town in Cuba

Our day started as usual… with some delicious breakfast. Right now, while we are at the harbor, we have the opportunity to eat outside the ship, at the harbor, with a nice view of beautiful palms and warmth from the sun.

After our breakfast, we had some free time until 11:30.

During that time, we could decide whether we wanted to go swimming, go to the small water slides at the harbor, work out, chill, or do some schoolwork for our homeschool and work on our upcoming math and physics project that we have to do on the ship. We could choose how to use this time in the best way for us.

After lunch, we prepared ourselves to visit the next small village near us. Our main goal was to walk to the beach.

While we walked there, we saw a university, school buses and many children coming back from school. The area we walked through was the part of the village where people lived, worked and went to school. Most of the houses were really old and broken because the people there were very poor.

They also used strategies like the one they tried with me and my friend group: They started talking to us on the streets and invited us to their house, then they tried to sell us stuff. Also, almost every shop there was in their garage.

When we arrived at the beach, we didn’t stay too long because we had free shore leave. But what was really nice was that we could see Havana from the beach, with its high skyscrapers.

When we got free shore leave, the groups split up. Some went back to the ship, but most of us explored the village. We also ate some delicious donuts on our way back to the city.

On our way back, we saw many Oldtimers, which are very common in Cuba. The Thor Heyerdahl ship is also next to us.

Today, we all played Capture the Flag together, which was really fun – unfortunately, we lost.

Then, we had an amazing sunset to end this fun day. And to make it even nicer, we did a little deep clean so the crew would be happy when they came back later. 🙂
