What does an Engineer do during the day?

For the last few days I’ve been working as an engineer during the Handover. On this ship the tasks of this person are very different and you’re responsible for every electronic and mechanical thing on board. The place where you can meet the engineer the most is the engine room, but often you can see them in bilges or working and repairing all around the ship.

The daily routine

Normally, when nothing of priority is broken you start your day at seven o‘clock in the morning for switching the generators. Since we have one generator (named Dg2) that can produce more power and one that is weaker (named DG1) we use Dg2 during the day because there are more people using electronics of the ship. At night we don’t need so much power so we can use DG1.

The next thing that needs to be done is the checking of the main engine and the generator that are currently running. For the last few days we’ve had a few problems with our fuel transfer pump. Therefore, we spent lots of time analyzing the error and repairing it, but all is good.

Also, the engineer is responsible for checking the fresh water level and, if necessary, turn on our Watermakers and fill up the daily tank. Additionally, you have to check the black and greywatertank and if they’re full you need to empty them.

Available 24 hours a day

Like almost every other job on a ship being an engineer is a 24 hour job. Therefore, if there is a problem in the middle of the night you will get woken up and are required to immediately get up and fix the problem. A few nights ago DG1 suddenly stopped running overnight so Rudi (our engineer) had to get up and solve the problem.

Maintenance

Our ship is the daily victim of corrosion, so everything that receives even the smallest drop of water will be soon covered in rust. For this reason, it is very important to check the pumps, and systems and of course the main engine and the generators on a weekly and for some things even on a daily basis.

For example, if we know in advance that we will motor for a longer period than usual, we would exchange all the filters and things that will expire after a certain amount of time.

There is always something to do and you will never get bored working as an engineer. In retrospect I have to say that I have learned so much in those last three days about mechanics like I never did before. Now I am fully aware of the importance of this job.

Ach und Mama, ich bin mir jetzt nicht mehr sicher, ob ich mit nach Bremen fahren soll oder nicht. Allen anderen in Grünau viel Erfolg und Spaß (Glück braucht ihr nicht, wie wir immer sagen.)
