Journey to Morocco

For most of us, the day started with a knock, knock, knock on the door from Fabia to wake us up at 6:15. Normally, we don’t get woken up by the teachers, so it was a special start to our day. After a quick meeting in the hotel, we walked 5 minutes to the same restaurant for breakfast where we ate the evening before.

They served us typical Moroccan bread with goat cream cheese and some kind of Nutella. After that, we each got an omelette. To drink, we got fresh orange juice and the typical mint tea (with too much sugar, so it was more like syrup) or coffee. After breakfast and a short sunrise photo shoot, we started the second part of our „short“ road trip with another 8-hour bus ride.

The bus ride was long but still pretty nice. We stopped three times, and we quickly realized how cheap things can be in Morocco. For example, we paid 40 cents for one lemonade or €1 for a coke at a gas station. The bus ride was pretty chill, and we saw the beautiful and diverse landscape of Morocco. As Noé said, it looks like „a bald head with a few last green-colored hairs (the trees).“ We didn’t do anything else except for Paulina (me) braiding Philipps‘ hair after 3 weeks of persuasion.

After our arrival in Essaouira, we had to walk about 5 minutes to our very cute Riad. In the riad, we first got our room keys, and everyone picked their rooms. Then the teachers gave us some time to make ourselves comfortable and fresh in our rooms before we all went to a restaurant together. We ate Tangier, and the teachers made an announcement. Tomorrow we all were allowed to sleep until nearly 10 o’clock when there will be breakfast. This is special for us because on every other day on the Pelican, we can only sleep until about 7, even if we are in the harbor. And we will be allowed to have our first free shore leave in the afternoon after an hour of self-learning.

Essaouira, Morocco 🇲🇦

Essaouira (pronunciation in German: essa-uiera or es-sauiera – in Arabic) — the name of the city means well-planned and has French roots dating back to the 18th century. That is why more Europeans live here than in other parts of Morocco. Essaouira has a very mixed culture. It influence from Europeans and three different tribes: Africans, Arabs, Chiadma (north), haha-berber, and Gnaoua (south) who live here.

You can see the French influence while walking through the city. The city was designed by the architect who designed the city Saint-Malo in France too. Because of this, the city is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our travel guide says that you can’t do much except for surfing and going on a stroll through the medina. You can’t even really lie on the beach because of the strong coastal winds alizee and taros. That’s why Essaouira is also often referred to as the Windy City of Africa.

Information and Cleaning


Yesterday, Fabia informed us about a spontaneous trip to Morocco that will take place this week. Our bus is booked for tomorrow morning, so we have to pack all our stuff today.

In today’s morning meeting, Ben, our captain, explained how we have to leave our cabins. Everything – and by everything, he really means everything, including our organizers, clothes, and anything else we brought on board – has to be stowed away in our bags on our bunks so the professional crew can work in our cabins to repair the ventilation system and other components.

It’s crucial that our cabins are tidy so the ship can maintain its hygiene while we’re away. Because hygiene is always important on a big ship like the Pelican. So we started our weekly Happy Hour. One watch cleaned all our cabins, including the walls, floors, and toilets. The other two watches cleaned the bridge area, the Poop Deck, the Well Deck, the Mess room, the Saloon, and the upper and lower Alleyway.

Packing and Preparing


The chaos began after lunch and an amazing Pathway Presentation from Lena. All the things we need for our trip to Morocco have to fit in our hiking backpacks, which we got from the bilge.

Many backpacks had mold on them, and we started to wash them on the Well Deck. To make the packing a bit less stressful, we packed in two groups: first the lower bunks and then the top bunks. While one half began packing their stuff, the others had free time and some tried to help in the Galley.

There was a lot to do because we had to pack lunch for 40 people. Some started slicing baguettes, others made peanut butter and jam sandwiches. After another handover in the Galley, I, myself (Eva), and the others who helped out were able to start our packing. Although only 2/3 of the people were packing their stuff per cabin, it was still difficult to sort out all our stuff. Especially because they were mostly organized in shoe organizers. But with some loud and motivating music, we were nearly finished when David (our new 1st mate) came to look at our cabins.

Evening with Kaiserschmarrn


Even though the Galley and the Mess-men had an incredibly hard day, they still granted us the wish to have some „Kaiserschmarrn.“ After this special dinner, we realized that some of the backpacks that were stored in the showers were completely wet.

The main problem was that our showers turn on if you push a button. This button was pushed by the weight of the backpacks. After the first shock, we still managed to dry all the clothes. This was way more difficult than we thought because only one of the two tumble dryer was working. Luckily, some of us were not as tired and offered to stay awake a little bit longer to dry the wet laundry. At nine o’clock, we all had to be in our cabin because the day tomorrow will start at five o’clock in the morning.

We were all really stressed and tired, but we are super exited to traveling to Morocco tomorrow.

Our hike to Sintras national park

The day started with an exclusive breakfast, as we had avocados in addition to the normal variety. Afterward, we had our daily morning meeting, where the crew provided information about the electric problems on board. The main concerns were the generators and the air conditioning. Despite our slight disappointment, they seemed dedicated to constant organizational efforts and repairs.

Then the teachers informed us spontaneously that we would be going on a hike to Sintra’s national park in only ten minutes. Since most of us were still in our pajamas, we got a little stressed. So we all rushed down into our cabins and got ready, which was a real challenge with 6 people and so little space.

We first took the bus and then the train, which together took us one hour. We walked through the little village until we reached the hiking path. The way up was beautiful but pretty exhausting, taking us about one more hour. It led us past little waterfalls and palm trees, allowing us to imagine what it will be like during the next few months in the Caribbean. Despite everyone feeling a little relieved to have a break, we organized the groups for our castle visit.

The castle was beautiful, even though we had to share it with a lot of other tourists. One tower was fully covered in tiles with little designs drawn onto them. The whole feeling inside made you realize it was a place built to actually live in and not just for show. Everyone looked happy but pretty tired on the way back and some even slept on the train for a bit.

After dinner, we had pink muffins as dessert, which tasted amazing. Now that the day has come to an end, the ship gets increasingly quiet. Some sit on the foredeck curled into their blankets, others are working on their pathway presentations in the messroom and some are even going to bed to get some rest after this day full of activities.

Sail Handling

Heute hatten wir zum ersten Mal die Chance, auf die Yards (die horizontalen Segel) zu gehen. Bevor wir jedoch damit anfangen konnten, haben wir noch eine Einweisung bekommen, wie man das Segel verstaut. Hier gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten:

1. Sea Stow: Das Segel wird einfach hochgezogen und so fest wie möglich mithilfe der Gaskets festgemacht. Hierfür mussten wir extra lernen, einhändig einen Clove Hitch (Webeleinstek) zu binden.

2. Harbour Stow: Hier wird das Segel Falte nach Falte hochgezogen und mit dem Ende ein Beutel gebildet, wo alles hineinkommt. Dann zieht man das Segel noch hoch auf den Yard und macht es mit den Gaskets fest. So ist alles schön verpackt, sieht gut aus und das Segel wird geschwitzt.

Nach dieser Einweisung durften wir hoch auf das Course und den Topsail und haben den Sea Stow geübt, danach haben wir durchgetauscht und den Harbour Stow geübt.

Astronomie und Wetterkunde

Während die eine Gruppe geklettert ist, hat die andere Gruppe bei David Unterricht gehabt. Wir haben gelernt, wie Ebbe und Flut funktionieren, sowie, wie man ein Wetterhoch und -tief misst und welche Schlüsse man daraus ziehen kann.

Joggen

Nachdem beide Gruppen mit dem Klettern durch waren und Fabia mit Gregor zurück waren, gab es die Möglichkeit, joggen zu gehen. Der Rest konnte auf dem Schiff bleiben und sich ausruhen, lesen oder für die Schule lernen. Der Media Pathway durfte jedoch nicht joggen, da sie ein Interview gefilmt haben.

Wir sind vom Schiff aus an der Promenade entlang in den Sonnenuntergang hineingelaufen, bis zu dem festgelegten Treffpunkt. Dort haben wir uns alle getroffen und sind dann wieder zurückgelaufen. Insgesamt sind wir sechs km gejoggt.

Der Unfall

Beim Schreiben dieses Tagesberichts stieß Noé seine randvolle Tasse Kakao um, die daraufhin dank der leicht abschüssigen Mess durch den halben Raum lief und in Sophies Crocs.

Swimming, Museum, Mood and conflict resolution

We can’t believe that one of six months has already passed. Last month was filled with moments of joy, friendship and a lot of vomiting… Our journey started later than expected, leaving us stranded in Sharpness for two weeks. When we finally left , the bay of Biskay showed all of us how to deal with difficult situations.

We grew closer and closer everyday despite the fact that some of us were feeling like they wanted to die. It was a very hard week but it let us become a stronger team. Our first destination Vigo was a good city to get some rest. After leaving and than again returning and than again leaving we had very nice, two whole days of sailing🤯. The plan was to sail to Tenerife directly, but our generators had other plans…

What we did today

Today our day started earlier than usually. At 8 o’clock we all mustered on the well deck. We knew that we were going to go to a museum and that we were going to go swimming in the ocean. So almost everyone took their bathing stuff with them and left the Pelican. Because our Lisboa cards were still valid we took the train to Belém, a part of Lisbon were the pasteis de Nata were first made.

When we got out of the train we followed our teachers as usual and hoped for the best. After a 10 Minute walk we were suddenly standing on a beach. We were all surprised and kind of confused because to me it felt like it was 10 degrees outside. Two seconds later a couple of us were standing on the beach in their bathing suites freezing. The water was freezing cold but it was really worth it going for a swim after being on a sailing ship for a month.

After the beach we went into a fortress on the water. Afterwards the plan was to go to a cathedral but the line was waaayyy to long so we were allowed to do things on our own. Funny enough we all decided to go to the same pasteis de Belém shop. They were so so good and we were all quite happy that we found some Berliner aka Kreppel.

When we came back to the Pelican group A had Geo lessons with Gregor and group B could sleep. After 1 1/2 hours we switched.

Pelican vs. Christian Radich

Pelican vs. Christian Radich

Gestern Abend haben wir kurz bei dem Schiff, das neben uns liegt, vorbeigeschaut. Es ist ein vollgetakeltes Schiff, also ein Schiff, das an allen Masten Rahsegel hat, namens Christian Radich. Weil wir uns alle für die Christian Radich interessiert haben, haben wir kurzfristig einen Besuchstermin für heute ausgemacht. Heute haben wir uns dann in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt und nacheinander eine sehr interessante Tour über die Christian Radich bekommen.

Sie ist deutlich größer als unsere Pelican und hat, wie gesagt, an allen Masten Rahsegel. Sie ist als Schulschiff gebaut worden und wird auch so genutzt. Gerade fand ein Crewwechsel statt. Die Schüler, die auf der Christian Radich mitfahren, tun das für einen Monat und sind ca. zwischen 15 und 27 Jahre alt. Insgesamt passen über 300 Leute auf das Schiff, im Moment sind aber nur ca. 30 an Bord. Zum Vergleich dazu: Auf die Pelican passen insgesamt 47 Leute. Diejenigen auf der Christian Radich müssen dann aber in Hängematten schlafen. Im Vergleich zur Pelican haben sie eine riesige Kombüse und ein sehr großes Steuerhaus.

Generell ist die Christian Radich ein sehr schönes, gepflegtes Schiff, und wir sind sehr froh, dass wir die Möglichkeit hatten, sie uns anzuschauen. Leider konnten wir Ali’s Aufgabe, zwei Generatoren, eine Klimaanlage und einen Handtuchhalter für die Hundezwinger zu klauen, nicht erfüllen.

(Fast) kostenlos durch Lissabon

Heute Nachmittag ging es noch einmal in die Altstadt von Lissabon. Diesmal haben wir alle eine Lissabon Card bekommen, in der öffentliche Verkehrsmittel, Museen und viele Attraktionen für 24 Stunden inbegriffen sind. In Gruppen konnten wir das in vollen Zügen ausnutzen und Lissabon noch einmal viel freier erkunden. Man konnte sogar mit einer Bahn über die von uns als Golden Gate Bridge getaufte Brücke fahren und einen Wahnsinns-Ausblick über die Bucht haben. Außerdem sehr interessant war das Nationale Historische Museum, und wir konnten viele schöne Aussichtspunkte besteigen, z. B. das Stadttor Arco da Rua Augusta im Sonnenuntergang. Wir hatten auch wieder viel Zeit zum Rumschlendern, Essen und Einkaufen.

Bus fahren

Wir sind in den letzten Tagen schon öfter Bus gefahren (teilweise auch sehr abenteuerlich), aber heute war es noch mal etwas Anderes. Auf der Hinfahrt lief alles super, abends war das etwas anders. Erst mussten wir ziemlich lange warten, und ständig kamen Linien, die nicht in die richtige Richtung fuhren. Nach einer Weile haben wir uns dann entschieden zu laufen, und an der nächsten Kreuzung kamen drei richtige Busse vorbei! Also wurde ordentlich gesprintet, die Ampeln haben zum Glück geholfen, und wir haben einen der Busse bekommen. Trotz der halben Stunde Verspätung haben wir zum Glück noch warmes Essen bekommen.

Als wir heute Abend wieder zur Pelican zurückgekommen sind, hat uns in unseren Bädern eine Überraschung erwartet: Die Bäder standen komplett unter Wasser! Sowohl die Duschen als auch die Böden waren geflutet. Zum Glück war das Wasser aber nur leicht dreckig. Mittlerweile ist das Wasser größtenteils entfernt.

Morning Training

In the morning, we continued with the sail training. Group A engaged in knots training with the Bosuns, and Ben provided buoy introductions to group B. After completing that, Ali informed group B about life jackets and what to do in an emergency. At the same time, Stephen gave a presentation to group A about cold shock and heat stroke. After group A concluded their discussion with Stephen, group B had their talk with him, while group A went to discuss safety equipment with Ali.

Big-J

Following all these training sessions, we took a walk to the Big Jesus statue. We walked for 45 minutes to reach the statue. Upon arrival, we had 30 minutes to explore and ascend to the top of the statue. A notable downside was that we had to pay eight euros to use the elevator and access the platform.

Afterward, we walked back, and on the way, we had some free time to visit supermarkets or drop off mail at the post station.

Christian Radich

Upon arriving at the Pelican, Tobi mentioned that anyone interested could go and observe the other sailing ship on our port side. We interacted with sailors from the Christian Radich (which is twice as fast as the Pelican!!!). Tobi managed to arrange for us to visit their ship tomorrow.

We also want to provide you with information about what we learned today in the buoy introductions training. There are starboard and port buoys. The starboard buoy is green, as is its light. The port buoy is red, with the light also being red. In addition to these two buoys, there are north, east, south, and west buoys.

These buoys are known as cardinal marks, marking unsafe areas. They always mark the outer points of the unsafe area. If there is a small unsafe area, such as a rock not visible in the water, you use the isolated danger mark. There is also a buoy that marks a safe entrance to a passage. This buoy is called a safe water mark. Special areas, such as those with munitions or a beach or a pipeline construction, are marked with the yellow special mark.

There is also an emergency wreck marking buoy. This marks new shipwrecks after the shipwreck has been taken out of the water.

Wie schön kann eine alte Fabrik sein?/ Mediennutzung an Bord

Ästhetische Märkte/ Schiffsrundfahrt

Heute haben unsere Lehrer:innen ein tolles Nachmittagsprogramm für uns organisiert. Es gab zwei Optionen: Einmal auf dem Schiff zu bleiben, sich ein wenig auszuruhen und durch den Hafen zu fahren (um den Motor und die Generatoren zu überprüfen) und die Option, mit Tobi und Gregor auf einen schönen portugiesischen Markt zu gehen (LX Factory). Da wir (Ole/Lenka) in unterschiedlichen Gruppen waren, können wir euch von beidem berichten.

Ole: Da unsere beiden Generatoren in den letzten Tagen repariert wurden, mussten wir eine Art Kontrolle durchführen und sind ohne diejenigen, die zur LX Factory gegangen sind, ausgelaufen. Wir sind etwa zwei Stunden durch den Hafen gefahren. Viele haben, genau wie ich, die Zeit genutzt, um an unseren Pathway-Referaten zu arbeiten oder für die Seamanship’s Level zu lernen.

Lenka: Wir haben zusammen mit Gregor und Tobi einen Ausflug zur LX Factory gemacht. Dort sind wir in einem 30-minütigen Spaziergang durch Lissabon gelaufen. Vor Ort gab es viele kleine Cafés, Restaurants und Marktstände, wo Schmuck, Kleidung und Essen verkauft wurden. Außerdem war die Streetart sehr beeindruckend. Wir hatten dann eine Stunde Free Shore Leave, in der wir uns frei über den Markt bewegen konnten. Auf dem Rückweg waren wir noch bei der Post, um ein paar verspätete Postkarten abzuschicken. Alles in allem war es ein sehr schöner Ausflug, und der Markt hat uns allen sehr gut gefallen.

Mediennutzung an Bord

Da die Mediennutzung an Bord so gering ist, haben wir für normale Dinge wie Musik hören andere Alternativen mitgenommen. Um zum Beispiel Musik zu hören, haben wir alle unsere MP3-Player dabei, bei denen darauf geachtet wurde, dass man nichts anderes außer Musik hören machen kann. Außerdem gibt es einmal in der Woche einen Filmabend, bei dem wir uns alle zusammen in der Messe über ein DVD-Werk Filme anschauen (heute haben wir „Interstellar“ geschaut, am Ende waren alle am Weinen. Es hat uns aber als Gruppe viel mehr zusammengeschweißt).

Durch den eingeschränkten Zugriff auf das Internet freuen wir uns immer über Möglichkeiten, Freunden und Verwandten Nachrichten zukommen zu lassen, z. B. durch Briefe. Da wir unsere Handys nur sechs Mal in sechs Monaten bekommen, ist es etwas sehr Besonderes, Nachrichten zu erhalten. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten wir noch gar keinen Kontakt zur Außenwelt. Natürlich nutzen wir auch Medien, um diesen Tagesbericht zu schreiben oder für schulische Zwecke. Das ist allerdings nicht vergleichbar mit unserer Mediennutzung zu Hause.

Viele vermissen langsam den Kontakt zu ihren Familien und Freunden und denken darüber nach, was daheim passiert. Wir vermissen mittlerweile so normale Dinge wie Informationen über die Außenwelt. Teilweise wird schon um eine kleine Zeitung gekämpft. Natürlich hat der Entzug vom dauerhaften Informationsfluss auch etwas Gutes. Auch wenn man viel darüber nachdenkt, was gerade alles passiert, ist man nicht ständig durch Medien usw. abgelenkt und ist ganz im Geschehen, ohne alle fünf Sekunden aufs Handy zu gucken.

Die Mediennutzung ist zwar sehr gering, aber fast alle sind erstaunt, wie wenig es sie stört.
