„Verhaftet wegen sexy!“

The first of april, a day for jokes and pranks. Of course we couldn’t let this opportunity pass. Two weeks ago we began planning the ultimate prank. Around 06:30 in the morning we started; everyone packing the prepared lunch boxes, putting on their Musto gear and the equipment for the separate jokes. The idea was to hide along the marina, giving the teachers and crew a light scare.

The prank was separated into multiple stations, each of them with around four students. The teachers needed to absolve different tests and tricks such as a quiz about us students or shots of weird mixtures. After finishing a station they would receive a new clue towards the next group of students. Along with the directions they received an article of ridiculous clothing; bright yellow trousers, pink swimming goggles and a crochet hat.

In the end they we’re forced to our very own cat walk, which killed them. „Verhaftet wegen sexy“ – Quote from our favorite ‘sexy‘ Johanna.

Egg hunt, ship edition

Back abord, Ben announced a surprise; the Easter bunny visited us yesterday, but none of us had found any. Armed with the knowledge of chocolate being abord, the ferocious hunt began. All together the Easter bunny hid 50 eggs, yet at least ten remain due to very creative hiding spots. Some were hidden up in the mast, others outside of the Reggie in the dinghy (don’t tell anyone, there is an egg hidden behind the coffee sacks).

Death in Horta

Finishing lunch, we embarked on a gripping rallye through the city. It was organized by our to be project leaders, Stella and Darja. We were tasked with following along clue and snippets throughout the city. Most were small puzzles which forced you to sit and think. The stations ranged from a popular beach to historic sights such as the church of the angry woman and a fort. We learned a lot about the history of the city and origins. It was a lot of fun!

Not funny!

Dinner was once more delicious, we had chicken with curry and a salad with fresh tomatoes. This was followed up with a heavenly two tier chocolate cake with cream and Easter bunny biscuits. Nearing the end we heard someone calling out for the crew, who had taken the evening off to eat in a restaurant. Before we could inform whoever was calling for them, Thomas burst into the messroom, ordering on shore.

In less then two minutes everyone had abandoned the Reggie, grouping outside. Smoke was bellowing from the front of the ship. There had been a small electrical fire in the dry store. But the teachers quickly got fire extinguishers and within seconds everything was under control, even before the fire alarm started. Nobody was endangered and in the end all was well.

What a day.

Gestern, am 16.12. überquerten wir, wie Anna gestern schon geschrieben hat, die Mitte des Atlantiks! Für uns frisch gebackene Seefahrer:innen ein großes Ereignis, denn die Tradition schreibt eine Taufe aus Neptuns Hand vor.

Bei dieser Taufe bekommen wir nicht nur Biomüll ins Gesicht geklatscht, nein, wir bekommen auch Fischnamen! Was für eine Ehre!

In dem heutigen Tagesbericht möchte ich euch unsere Fischnamen und die Begründungen zu diesen vorstellen. (Da freuen sich unsere Eltern. ;))

Fischnamen!

Adrian: Es steckt ihm im Blut, er ist ein wahrer Segler! Deshalb wurde er nach dem Sailfish getauft.

Andrea: Andrea ist genau so klein und quirlig wir eine Makrele. Sie ist überall auf dem Schiff zu finden und strahlen tut sie auch andauernd! Sie macht ihrem Namen alle Ehre.

Anna: Ist pures Gold für alle an Bord! Eine treue Seele, die ihre Freunde niemals im Stich lässt. ,,El dorado“, sie ist die Dorade.

Aurelia: Mit keinem versteht sie sich nicht! Scherzt und lacht mit jedem, ohne Ausnahme. In jeder Gruppe hier wilkommen, deshalb der Grouper.

Aurelius: Das er Schweizer ist zeigt er uns nicht nur durch seinen hier allbeliebten Akzent. Er ist der Bismarck, unser Schweizer Herrscher!

Darja: Keine ist so lieb in allem was sie tut. Manchmal glaube ich, sie würde sogar lieb streiten. Immer lächelnd und golden schwimmend, genau wie die Goldbrasse.

Elisabeth: Wenn man sie sieht, dann am lesen! Was sie gerade liest? Etwas über einen Detektiv! Genauso scharf kombiniert sie übrigens auch! Sie ist unser Schwertfisch.

Ella: Zeichnen, basteln, häkeln und kreativ sein! Das ist nicht nur ihr Ding, genauso sieht sie auch aus. Glänzend in allen Farben ist sie der Regenbogenfisch.

Emma: Wenn sie tanzt, dann aber richtig! Andauernd am springen, lächeln und singen. Sie ist wild wie der Wildlachs!

Franka: Aufgedreht, neugierig und immer am zappeln. Auch in ihrem Kopf, sie ist ein sehr schlaues Mädchen. Ein guter Vergleich zu ihr ist Nemo, der Clownfisch.

Greta: In Sachen Frisur kann ihr keiner etwas vormachen, windschnittig wie ein Hai. Außerdem bekannt für ihre Steinstopps, genau wie der Riffhai.

Isabel: Immer anmutig und bezaubernd. Beliebt bei allen, keiner könnte ihr etwas abschlagen! Sie ist wie ein Goldfisch.

Jane: Haben wir sie je ohne Streifenshirt gesehen? Ich glaube mich an keinen Tag erinnern zu können! Sie hat die schönsten Streifen der Regina Maris! Ein waschechter Streifenfisch.

Jonna: Berüchtigt wie keine:r. Tummelt immer hier und da, tanzt herum mit den coolsten Moves. Sie ist der Blaue Marlin.

Joshua: Unsere Schichtprinzessin trägt immer ein Rotes Kreuz irgendwo und hat das gesamte Buch der Notfallsanitäter:innen studiert. Er ist ein DOKTORfisch.

Jule: Nicht nur ihre Haare sehen nach einem Löwen aus, nein, auch ihre Stimme ist mächtig wie das Gebrüll eines Löwen. Auf den Lionfisch solltet ihr lieber hören!

Julius: Seit Beginn der Reise steckt unser Anglerfisch seine in Den–Haag gekaufte Angelroute bei jeder Möglichkeit ins Wasser. Kein Fisch bleibt vor ihm verschont.

Justus: Wenn er nicht gerade Musik macht, paddelt er entspannt durch den Tag und schaut mal so, was kommt, genau wie eine Seeschildkröte. Er hat sich wohl an unserem Motto ,,Wir segeln und gucken was kommt,, orientiert.

Kris: Packt bei jeder Arbeit ordentlich mit an! Wenn es allerdings nicht läuft wie durchdacht, haut sie auch gerne mal zu (natürlich sinnbildlich gemeint ;)). Wenn sie allerdings zufrieden ist, ist sie friedlich wie ein Hammerhai.

Lasse: Wenn er nicht wäre, wäre gar nichts. Pokerspieler, Zocker und Ingenieur in der Wache! Wenn man ihn verkaufen würde, wäre er teuer wie ein Koi–Karpfen.

Lenara: Ist die meiste Zeit ein sehr friedliches Seelchen, doch wagt man es, das ruhige Geschöpf wild zu machen, bereut man es und wird gebissen wie von einem Tigerhai.

Leopold: Er sieht, fühlt und reagiert wie ein Leopard und ist außerdem bei allen beliebt wie eine Leopardenforelle bei Anglern.

Lilia: Sie ist eine Dichterin vom Feinsten, ganz genau wie Schiller. Außerdem hat sie wilde Locken, auf die man neidisch sein kann! Die Schillerlocke!

Luis: Egal, wo man hinsieht, er ist dort. Egal, wo man hinsieht, man freut sich über die Unterhaltung und den Schwung, den er mitbringt! Er ist der Fliegende Fisch unseres Schiffes.

Luisa: Luisa steht auf Traditionen und verrückte Ideen. Einen Charakter, den man überall wertschätzt! Klarer Fall für den Heilbutt.

Margaux: Schwebt elegant durch die Gänge des Schiffes und verliert ihr strahlendes Lächeln auch nicht in den stressigsten Situationen! Man sieht ihr ihr Seepferdchen an.

Mascha: Immer anzutreffen, wo sich “Fische schwärmen”. Tanzt außerdem elegant wie ein Barrakuda schwimmt!

Mattis: Liebt alles, was oldschool ist! Zieht sich an, tanzt, putzt und macht Witze wie man es in den 90‘s getan hat. Woran man das sieht? – Fragt Thomas. Der Mattis ist ein  Hecht!

Max: Ihr fragt euch, wo euer Essen hin verschwunden ist? Das hat wahrscheinlich der immer hungrige Piranha Max gesehen und geschnappt.

Onno: Er ist einfach unergründlich! Niemals wirst du in seinem Gesicht seine Gedanken lesen können. Onno, der sehr erhabene Mondfisch.

Samuel: Meistens zeigt er allen seine harte und scheinbar undurchdringlich harte Schale wie ein Hai. Doch manchmal, wenn er einen besonders guten Tag hat, kann man in seine innere weiche Katze hineinschauen. Er ist ein Katzenhai.

Sanja: Ganz egal, wie stark die Seekrankheit bei unserer Kotzrekordhalterin auch war, sie glitt und schwebte durch die scheinbar nie endende Situation wie ein Mantarochen.

Stella: Kein Tag mit Pause für unseren Sonnenschein. Sie ist immer am machen und “thun” wie ein Gelbflossen-Thunfisch.

Tobias: Ist so riesig und mächtig wie ein Blauwal. Nennen tut er sich übrigens auch selber gerne so.

Wilma: Niemand kommt an ihre Pathway Präsentation heran! Dank ihr lernten wir geschmeidig und schnell, wie die Welt des Planktons aussieht. Sie ist die Königin der Präsentationen! – Ein Königsfisch.

Unsere Fischnamen haben sich Thomas und Mats ausgedacht. Vermutlich tagelange Arbeit, für die wir hier alle sehr dankbar sind. An die Kreativität des Leher:innenteams kommt nur schwer eine(r) heran!

Yesterday evening, our Captain Michael told us some exiting news.
No endless hanging around in harbour anymore, Wednesday we will cast off. But as soon as the first excitement had faded away, you could find the first hints of worry in our conversations.

The last trip with our ship took a catastrophic turn:
Constant sickness, understaffed watches and a graveyard-like messroom was standard condition.
So, what can we do to prevent something like that happening again?
Personally, I trust in the experiences and tipps of others!

How was your Seasickness?

Our interview volunteers Margaux, Luisa and Stella were so kind to share their experiences with us today:

Aurelia: “Luisa, how did you feel during the trip from Calais to Roscoff?“

Luisa: “I unfortunately vomited into my bed once. I had like this special sick feeling. I spent 45,5 hours laying in my bed sleeping.“

Aurelia: “Margaux, did you also have the same feeling as Luisa? What did you recognize besides that?“

Margaux: “There‘s no comparable feeling to seasickness. You feel dizzy and always think you could lose your orientation. I was one of the worse cases and now I can understand what Johan meant when he said, ‘You will feel like you get run over by a tractor’ to everyone during the application interview.“

Aurelia: “Stella, you were also more or less not able to do anything, right? Do you want to explain that?“

Stella: “The worst thing for myself was, that I always felt sick but I was just not able to puke. It was horrible! Besides that I couldn’t rely on my sense of balance and I ran into stuff all the time. You could hear it, if I was walking somewhere! Bumm, Buff!“

Tips and Tricks, what helped you?

Because of the terrible situation Stella, Margaux and Luisa were able to collect some suggestions to regulate the symptoms. Maybe you can enjoy the next unstable days with them.

Aurelia: “If I’m already with you, dear Poltergeist, what helped you Stella?“

Stella: “Sleeping! When I had the opportunity to get into my bed and close my eyes, I did it immediately. Not only that you can’t get seasick during sleep but your body also gets used to the movements of the ship. In the few moments I wasn’t sleeping I just distracted myself. I repeated the ABC backwards multiple times. I’m actually pretty good at it by now.“

Aurelia: “Luisa, your tip is probably also sleeping. Your record with 45,5 hours of sleep is only broken by two people on board. What else carried you through this time?“

Luisa: “Actually, yes! Motivate yourself! In the worst moments I reminded myself that I am really at Ocean College right now and that the best time of my life is before me! You will instantly feel less like vomiting when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.“

Aurelia: “Well, now we have a good arsenal of tricks against most of the symptoms, Margaux do you have any more things for prophylaxis?

Margaux: “Definitely eating enough! Before we got outside of the harbour I ate a whole Tuck package and drank one liter of water in one hour. Tobias‘ cream cheese sandwiches were a real life saver.
It’s also very good to have a view of the horizon. Seeing that not your whole world is moving calms your head.“

Aurelia: “Thank you guys. I really enjoyed to hear your puking experiences and we are all grateful for your sharing and caring.“

Sanja: “I’m thankful to be here as a V.I.P! All I can say is that you should stand instead of sitting or laying down, even if it feels bad the first minute. When you stand you can see and feel the movements of the waves. I hope this trick will help you!”
