In a few days our Handover will start, so we are all preparing for this. Because every job is different, everybody is learning stuff according to his handover job.

The different jobs

A Captain should know all the bridge work, he has to write the lookbook, plot positions and stuff like that. He also has to have a lot of knowledge about the sails and sailing, because he is the one who decides which sails we set or hand. As a Captain you also should be able to handle a lot of responsibility.

The first mate is the one who organises the most. He has to organize his watch, for example who is going to be messmen.
The second mate is responsible for the weatherforecast and the navigation. He plans the route and says how we should change it, according to the weatherforecast.

The one you will find in the engine room most of the time is the Engineer. He is for example doing the generator switches, is responsible for the watermakers and of course the engine. But he also has to unblock blocked toilets.

The bosun and the bosuns mate are working in a team, but the bosun is more responsible for sailhandling and manages what should be done and the bosuns mate does more the handcrafted stuff, repairs broken things like ropes or for example our hotwaterboiler.

Maintenance and the ships laundry are also a part of the bosunary jobs.

The cook is obviously responsible for the galley, preparing three meals a day. Our handover cooks will also have three messmen, as usual. The cooks are going to help Margo to buy our food provisioning on the Azores.

The medic is responsible for every injury that could happen. A big part of the job is checking the medicine we have on board and look if we have enough and that it’s not expired.

How do you prepare yourself for your handoverjob?

Karl (Captain): I was talking to the captain and asked him how to be a captain.

Lenka (first mate): I think, I just reviewed all of my knowledge about the ship and just asking a lot of questions. I have to prepare a meeting with everyone from my watch and at the moment I‘m just planning.

Liane (second mate): I refreshed everything I know about the navigation stuff and looked a bit over David’s shoulder to see what he‘s doing over the day.

Julius (Engineer): I ask everybody of the PC what they know about the engine room and other necessary stuff and be „a sponge and suck out information“

Friedrich (Bosun): I will go over everything that I learned in the bosunary department and learn more from the Bosuns.

Ben (Bosuns mate): If I don’t know something yet I will go to Justus or Hanna and just ask what to do 🙂

Noé (Cook): First of all I‘m very happy about becoming cook at the handover! For the preparation the cook team will do some optimized grocery shopping with Margo. As I‘m the very last one to be cook, I have a lot of time to think about what meals the others love and I can cook. Yeah that’s basically it:)

Emma (Medic): I participated in the first aid lessons and helped Claire to check our medical Instruments.

Ein bisschen etwas zum Tagesablauf

Der Tag begann mit einem wolkenlosen Himmel und ruhigerer See, was allen Seekranken unter uns enorm half. Aufgrund von unterseeischen Vulkanen mussten wir etwas von unserem Kurs abweichen, da in Gebieten, in denen sich diese befinden, das Wasser oft viel zu seicht ist, um mit einem Schiff mit vier Meter Tiefgang zu navigieren. Deshalb kam der Wind konstant von Nordost was es uns unmöglich machte, unsere Squaresails zu setzen. Heute jedoch änderte sich dies und wir konnten das Course-und Topsail setzen.

Um die Segel zu setzen, ist es notwendig, in das Rigg hinaufzuklettern und wegen Unachtsamkeit oder extrem starkem Wellengang kann es auch mal passieren, dass jemand aus dem Rigg fällt. Die professional Crew führt regelmäßig Übungen dazu durch, um diesen Fall zu proben und Janice, unsere Bosun und Jih, unser Bosun’s mate, hatten nachmittags Zeit uns zu erklären, wie das Ganze funktioniert.

Sicherheitsübung mit unseren Bosun‘s

Auf allen bisherigen Ocean College Reisen gab es noch keine solche Situation, jedoch ist es trotzdem sehr wichtig, dies zu üben, um im Ernstfall richtig zu reagieren. Da ja immer ein Watchleader oder der Bosun’s mate auf einem der Yards sitzen und uns Anweisungen gibt, ist schon mal eine erfahrene Person im Falle des des Falls in Reichweite.

Der- oder diejenige muss anschließend dem Bosun Bescheid geben, der in einem Klettergurt von Deck aus auf uns aufpasst. Am besten so „ruhig” wie möglich, damit keine allgemeine Panik ausbricht. Anschließend sollen alle anderen, die möglicherweise noch auf demselben Yard sind, aus dem Weg. Im besten Fall nicht nach unten, da von dieser Richtung der Bosun kommt, um die Rettung durchzuführen.

Auch wenn die Person ohnmächtig ist, sollte man seine Schritte durch Reden erklären, da man sich so zum einen selbst nochmal bestätigt und zum anderen die Person trotzdem im Unterbewusstsein etwas mitbekommt. Der nächste Schritt wäre das Safetykit mit der Gantline von dem jeweiligen Mast hinaufzuziehen. Die Gantline ist eine Leine, die an jedem Mast befestigt ist und für allerlei Dinge verwendet werden kann.

Sobald der Bosun das Kit bekommen hat, gibt es mehrere Leinen darin, die zur Rettung der Person beitragen. Die höchstrangige Person auf Deck führt die ganze Operation an und gibt jedem Anweisungen, was zu tun ist. Eine Leine aus dem Kit wird um den Yard gezurrt, um das Hineinschwingen in den Mast zu vermeiden und die Gantline und eine andere Leine aus dem Safetykit werden an dem mittleren Karabiner der zu rettenden Person befestigt.

Falls der/die Betroffene bei Bewusstsein ist, ist es am Besten, anhand der Gantline die Person wieder auf das Footrope zu bringen. Falls dies aufgrund von Angstzuständen oder Ohnmacht nicht möglich ist, wird er/sie langsam mit den erwähnten Seilen hinuntergelassen. Die bessere Variante ist aber nie das Hinunterlassen, da das bei Wellengang zu extremen Schwingungen führen kann.

Anschließend haben wir das noch mit einer Puppe am Mizzenmast geübt. Das ist natürlich der Extremfall beim Klettern, aber solange man die drei Berührungspunkte einhält und beide Safetyclips eingehakt sind, kann sowas nicht passieren.

Today we have to pack all our stuff because we will now fly to Costa Rica. Nothing can stay in the cabins, even the pictures from the walls have to disappear. This sounds easy but actually it’s a big challenge. Because, where should all the stuff stay, when not in the cabin? It’s a big chaos in the cabins. Everywhere lays everything – from underwear to school stuff. Also the green mile is covered with bags, trash and ownerless things.

Because there can’t be six people packing in one cabin at the same time, the even bunks are packing before lunch and the odd bunks in the afternoon. Even though it’s still very full in the cabins.

Some people started packing yesterday, which is very smart because now it should be less stressful today for them and also for everybody else.

A good thing about the packing is, that we find things we missed for a long time. Many people (including me) found their blue Ocean College bracelet with the telephone number which is very good because we are not allowed to leave without it.

What should we take with us?

Yesterday we had a meeting where we were told what we shouldn’t forget. We don’t have much space for many things, just our 60l backpack and a small daybag. But because of the flight we don’t take our tents with us, we just use the tents of the Regina Maris if necessary. Big thanks to them for that opportunity. Of course we need lots of clothes, so everyone is thankful for every sock they find. Shoes are also a problem. We all agree, that crocs are very important, so we take them with us. Then we also need some more proper shoes, we can choose between tracking boots or Gummistiefel.

Laundry

Yesterday we made a plan for the laundry machine and the tumble dryer so that every cabin can wash all their stuff. The poor laundry machine, which you can normally just use from 6am to 8pm is running 24/7 now. Some people are staying awake in the night for some hours, just to do the laundry. Also the anchor watches are organising laundry.

Bilge

For packing we had to take all our bags and backpacks out of the Mainmastbildge. Some people didn’t put their things down because of fear of mold like last time. But because of this we put the stuff in trash bags this time. Sadly some of them are still moldy and now we have to clean it again. But this time it’s way better than before Morocco.

Shanty night

In the evening, after Tamsin looked in every cabin very critical, we met outside on the picnic tables and had a meeting where we were told all the important information about tomorrow. After that we had a shanty night. Everyone who wanted could sing Shantys together. It was very nice, even though we had to go to bed early because we have to get up at 05:30 tomorrow.

Fliegen fliegen von Bord

Heute morgen beim Morgenmeeting wurde unser aktuelles Fliegenproblem angesprochen. In den letzten Tagen haben die nämlich besonders in unseren cabins deutlich zugenommen. Eigentlich ist offenes Essen in den Cabins verboten, beim heutigen Notfall-Cleanup wurde aber doch so einiges gefunden.

Weitere Weihnachtsvorbereitungen

Jetzt, kurz vor Weihnachten, werden täglich viele Weihnachtsvorbereitungen getroffen. Unser momentanes Projekt ist ein ziemlich großes Lebkuchenschiff, an dem jeden Tag weitergebaut wird. Deko kann man auch schon an vielen Stellen am Schiff finden und natürlich laufen viele mit Weihnachtsmützen rum. Abends wird die Plätzchenfabrik im Messroom angeworfen und es werden massenweise Plätzchen gebacken, die wir aber leider noch nicht essen dürfen. Weihnachtsmusik kommt auch definitiv nicht zu kurz an Bord.

Ungewohnte Temperaturen

Ich persönlich finde es sehr komisch, dass in fünf Tagen Weihnachten ist, wir aber trotzdem jeden Tag in T-Shirt und Crocs rumlaufen weil wir über 20 Grad haben. Heute waren wir auch am Strand und haben gebadet, in der Sonne gelegen und natürlich Eis gegessen.

Weihnachtsstimmung?

Kommt da trotzdem Weihnachtsstimmung an Bord auf? Ich persönlich bin auf jeden Fall nicht so in Weihnachtsstimmung wie ich sie von Zuhause kenne, die Umstände sind einfach zu ungewohnt. Aber was sagen die anderen hier dazu?

Charlotte: „Nein, ich bin nicht in Weihnachtsstimmung, weil es erstens viel zu warm dafür ist und zweitens meine Familie nicht hier ist, mit der ich normalerweise Weihnachten feiere.“

Klara: „Ich bin auch nicht in Weihnachtsstimmung, obwohl wir Plätzchen backen und so, aber es ist einfach zu warm und das ist ganz merkwürdig.“

Leah: „Ich bin überhaupt nicht in Weihnachtsstimmung, trotz dessen dass wir viele Plätzchen backen und Weihnachtsmusik hören. Für mich gehört in die Weihnachtszeit meine Familie, die hier sehr fehlt.“

Julius: „Hat sehr lange gedauert, wegen Marokko, des warmen Klimas und so, aber jetzt kommt die Weihnachtsstimmung so langsam durch Kekse backen etc..“

Sophie: „Absolut nicht!“
