Vorbereitung

In der letzten Woche hat der Konkurrenzkampf begonnen. Wir alle haben unsere Bewerbungen eingereicht und uns auf die Bewerbungsgespräche vorbereitet. Jede Position kann vier mal besetzt werden und jeder hat eine Erst- und Zweitwahl. Die Handover beginnen nach den Azoren und gehen bis England. In dieser Zeit übernehmen wir Schüler die Aufgaben der Professional Crew auf der Pelican.

Bewerbungsgespräche

Bei den Bewerbungsgesprächen sitzt immer der Teil der Professional Crew, die die Position haben, für die wir uns beworben haben und unsere 1 Mate Tamsin. Im Gespräch wird einerseits kurz das Wissen über den Bereich abgefragt aber auch persönliche Fragen können gestellt werden. Hierbei geht es um reine Vorbereitung. Wer sich authentisch und mit gutem Wissen präsentiert, hat eine höhere Chance genommen zu werden.

Bei den Watchofficer Positionen (Captin, 1. Mate und 2. Mate) werden Navigationswissen sowie Szenarios abgefragt, wie z.B. Was macht der 2. Mate bei einem Feuer? oder was tust Du, wenn der Wind dreht und die Segel zu reißen drohen?

Das Gleiche gilt bei den anderen Positionen auch. Die Intention ist es, uns eine Idee von späteren Jobinterviews zu geben und zu schauen, wer wie gut für verschiedene Positionen geeignet ist.

Im heutigen Morning Meeting wurden uns unsere neuen Positionen und Watches mitgeteilt. Es gibt vier Watches, die jeweils drei Tage die Verantwortung übernehmen.

Was hältst Du von den neuen Watches/ Deiner neuen Position?

Eva: „Ich finde meine neue Watch echt supi. Generell ist es cool, dass wir nochmal ein bisschen Abwechslung haben und mit Leuten die Chance haben Watch zu machen, mit denen wir noch nie Watch hatten. Ich glaub‘ alle sind wirklich echt sehr zufrieden und gespannt, wie das Handover wird.

Die nächsten Tage werden glaub ich sehr lang und anstrengend aber auch sehr cool, außerdem glaube ich vor allem, dass wir in so kurzer Zeit jetzt nochmal extrem viel dazu lernen.“

Klara: „Ich finde die Watchverteilung echt gut und die meisten haben auch ihren erst Wunsch als Job bekommen. Ich glaube, das wird sehr lustig und ich freue mich voll zu sehen, was wir im Endeffekt wirklich machen dürfen.“

Jonathan: „Ich finde meine Watch echt bombastisch. Bei uns ist jeder zufrieden und wir freuen uns alle auf unsere Watches. Wir sind jetzt schon eine Gruppe und haben alle Freunde. Auch wenn wir nicht Handoverwatch haben, werden wir mindestens 8h Spaß haben!“

After we came back from our land program in Costa Rica our hope that everything was fine now was very high until we had to get off the ship two days later. Now we are back on board and you may wonder how we as a group of 39 people from Ocean College deal with this situation and how the mood is on Pelican.

What I recognised is a lot of patience and understanding of the situation but also a little bit of nerved faces. By now we were several time in a hotel which trained us as a group to believe in Pelican but also to keep our good group dynamic. But all in all there is less frustration than expected which is good for our life together on Pelican.

How are your feelings due to the situation of our journey and the Pelican?

Lou: Most of the time I play it down as something funny, I think most of us do, since we can’t really do anything about it anyway. But of course it sometimes does get to me, that if things wouldn’t have happened and everything would have gone by plan we wouldn’t have had to leave out this much.
And yes, it’s true we were able to see Marokko which for sure was amazing, but it still frustrates me from time to time. And then last Friday, when our galley got flooded and most of us had to work till the afternoon even though we were seasick the general mood got pretty heavy.

Ben: I’m pretty fine with the situation on board right now because I’m really happy that we are going to San Blas Islands (I’m so exited;!!), but no, I don’t feel bad or something, I’m just happy to be here and happy with the people who are on board right now.

Is Pelican our home?

What I questioned myself after the captain welcomed us back on board with the words: “ Welcome to your second home” was: “Is Pelican my second home or do I just feel comfortable on board?”

I have the feeling that Pelican is a place where I spent my time on with my friends and a lot of experiences. But for me it doesn’t feel like a real home. I have the feeling that the time in the hotels and the general period of time on land was too long and spreaded to really get into the ships routine (watches and cabins).

I feel comfortable on board but a lot of impact on that are my friends but the time we spent in hotels is missing to create a feeling of home. That is the feeling of a lot of us.

What happened today

Today was the first morning back on Pelican. We started as usual with the 8:45 morning meeting followed by some school. We all checked our school stuff from home and organised that for the following days at sea. After lunch time we went shopping.

In the time we were ashore, our laundry was being made. After we came back on board we recognised that laundry was missing so we went to shop some underwear and T-shirts with the OC Credit Card for the people that had nothing left to wear. That was quite a challenge because in the area we were there were not that many and especially good stores.

Die aktuellen Pläne

Nachdem wir heute Morgen statt auf der Pelican in einem Hotel aufgewacht sind und unklar war, wie es nun für uns weitergeht, haben wir nach dem Frühstück die für unsere Reise entscheidende Neuigkeit bekommen:

Wir fliegen nach Costa Rica, anstatt zu segeln und das nicht erst in einer Woche, sondern in zwei Tagen. Damit ist es möglich, die nötigen Ersatzteile einzufliegen und keinen Zeitverlust zu haben. Deshalb checkten wir direkt nach dem Frühstück aus dem Hotel in Philipsburg aus, um wieder auf die Pelican zu fahren.

Nach vier sehr nassen und welligen Rib-Runs waren wir zum Mittagessen dann wieder alle auf der Pelican, um die kommende Reise nach Costa Rica zu planen bzw. vorzubereiten.

Dazu gehört, unsere Rucksäcke zu packen und unsere Cabins komplett leer zu räumen, da wir nach dem Landprogramm in Costa Rica die Cabins tauschen. Den Nachmittag verbrachten wir also mit Sortieren und Organisieren.

Das richtige Packen beginnt morgen… Was wir bisher alle bei Ocean College gelernt haben, ist flexibel zu sein.

The Reaktionen der Crew

Wie findest Du, dass unser Plan sich mal wieder ändert und wir fliegen?

Erik: Ich wäre zwar lieber Schiff gefahren, aber fliegen ist auch toll.

Sophie: Ich muss sagen, dass ich es ehrlich gesagt ganz gut finde, weil ich erstens alle Night Watches überspringe und zweitens keine Angst haben muss, auf einmal so vier Stunden lang nicht aufs Klo gehen zu können. Segeln wäre natürlich weniger stressig gewesen und wir hätten noch nicht so früh packen müssen, aber um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich hier gelernt, einfach alles zu akzeptieren.

Noé: Ist ganz ok.

Anna L.: Ich bin schon ein wenig enttäuscht, dass wir nicht segeln, aber ehrlich gesagt war es schon vorhersehbar. Ich bin froh, dass wir rechtzeitig nach Costa Rica kommen, auch wenn wir jetzt fliegen müssen. Pläne ändern sich hier immer.

Klara: Ich wäre gerne gesegelt, aber ich hätte es schlechter gefunden, noch mehr Zeit zu verlieren, also finde ich es jetzt nicht so cool, aber mei, was soll man machen.

Eva: Ich finde es, um ehrlich zu sein, ziemlich schade, da ich mich auf die Etappe von St. Martin nach Panama am meisten gefreut habe und da auf der Pelican das Zusammenleben an Bord total anders ist. Man macht viel mehr mit unterschiedlichen Leuten und das mag ich so sehr an dem Alltag hier.

Weather Change

Today was the second day at sea after a long period of time. The beautiful weather we had yesterday changed over night to 30 knots of wind and 2-3 meter waves. Even though the conditions were not that great, I feel like the seasickness hasn’t hit nearly as much people than before.

Second Family

After almost two months of living together on Pelican we can say that we have found our second family. It’s not only that we live together or that we share bathrooms or the space on board. It’s about a feeling that we created over the last weeks.

We care about each other, listen to each other and we have a great time together. The fact that we can’t escape the ship, trains our social skills, such as resolution, which is UNUMGÄNGLICH on board.

Home is not always a place where you feel connected to. Home is made by people.
For myself I can say that I got to know a lot of habits from the others and also the intense AUSEINANDERSETZUNG with each other created deep connections on board. Everyone has somebody to talk to. If anyone feels sick or not ok everybody is there to help. It makes situations of seasickness, homesickness and sickness in generell easier because we know we have people that stand behind us.

We are very thankful for the opportunity of living together on Pelican as well as that we have met each other because we found our second family.

Interview

Does the Pelican feel like Home to you?

Ben: I wouldn’t describe it as my home but I got to say that it’s nice to come back to Pelican.

Charlotte: A little bit. My bunk is my save place and I like it to come back.

Eva: I think it’s really hard to describe what the Pelican is for me… somehow it feels like home but on the other side it doesn’t because five weeks isn’t that long.

Noé: Yes, the Pelican feels like home most of the time but sometimes when I miss my real Family it doesn’t.

When did you start to call the Pelican Home?

Ben: I haven’t yet but maybe it will be at some point.

Charlotte: I call it home, if I am out of the ship and come back. Because it’s easier to say I come back home as I come back to the Pelican.

Eva: I never thought about that but I remember saying that we are back home when we came back to the Pelican after the two weeks in Marocco.

Noé: The first time one of the Watch Leaders said: There is our flouting home… I realized it really is and that it will be our home for the next five months.

How do you define Family and friends?

Ben: I would define them as people you really like and care about.

Charlotte: Family and friends are people who know me and with them I can talk about everything.

Eva: I would say family and friends are people who I spent a lot of time with because they know me very well and because I can trust them… the main difference between family and friends is that you are related to your family.

Noé: Family are the people I live with and love. Friends are those who I decide to spend my time with. Those people who I trust and enjoy.

Have you found friends or family on board?

Ben: Yeah, I absolutely found friends here. And because friends are the family you can choose yourself I also found family here.

Charlotte: Yeah I find some friends, but in this moment I wouldn’t call them family. But maybe later.

Eva: Yes, I believe I found both in the same people. On board good friends are basically the same as family because you live with them and you don’t have your “real” family so everyone (especially you and your close friends) work together.

Noé: I absolutely found friends on board and without them the whole trip wouldn’t be that nice. Our friend-group starts to feel like family. It feels like we’re brothers and sisters who make each other laugh.
