safety during the journey

The safety of participating youth is always Ocean College’s top priority.

The participants

are individually covered as follows:

  • On land via the individual travel health insurance, which also includes repatriation in case of emergency.
  • During the presence on the ship additionally via the operator of the ship (P&I insurance)

The Crew

always has current first aid training as part of their seamanship training and additionally also the so-called “Basic Safety” training.

This has the following contents:

  • Survival at sea, self-rescue
  • Handling of personal and collective means of rescue
  • Fighting and extinguishing fires
  • Initiation of measures after an accident or emergency
  • Prevention of marine pollution
  • Compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
  • Relations between people on board
  • Basics in emergency response

The Ships

are certified for “worldwide travel”, which requires, among other things, the following equipment:

  • Watermaker plant
  • Reserve water tank
  • Radar system
  • Life jackets
  • Life rafts
  • Satellite telephone
  • Tracking systems
  • Fire alarm
  • Onboard pharmacy

During the voyage, medical professionals are always on board.
