Right now, we are in the middle of the handover, where some students who went through an application process have taken over jobs like project leader or nautical crew. Thus, there is also a watch officer, which is the job which I have and I am going to tell you about.

The schedule of the officer

My day started at 04:30 in the morning when I got woken up by the Bravo Watch. I’m an officer of the Charlie watch which goes from 5:00 to 9:00 in the morning as well in the evening.

In my opinion this is the best watch of all watches because it has all the sunrises and sunsets, which are always beautiful to look at. On top of that, I really enjoy the sleeping rhythm you get through the watch because you don’t have to stay awake until 01:00 or stand up then for doing watch until 05:00. You can simply go to bed at 21:00 in the evening and then you have to stay up at 05:00 in the morning, which means you can get seven hours of sleep at night easily.

What a day in the life looks like…

When I am awake, I go up on watch and do the watch handover with the Bravo officer (Mattis). This means the Bravo officer tells me all the important, special or funny things that happened during his watch in addition to all recent developments about sails and the engine room.

Last but not least, we have created a handover tradition which means that we play one round of „bowmasters“ on the board iPad between each other. When this round is completed, the watch handover is officially done and the Bravo Watch can go back to bed.

When my watch is happening, I have responsibility of everything that is happening. I decide which sails get set, which course we steer, analyse the traffic that is around, which weather we will see and much more. In total it’s a very nice job to have, being the Charlie officer.

Heute hat unser geliebter Kapitän Heine, auch bekannt als “El Capitano” oder “Heineken”, Geburtstag. Das ist natürlich ein großer Tag für alle an Bord der Regina Maris. Dementsprechend gab es auch am Abend ein regelrechtes Festessen, welches von unserem Chefkoch Herrn Lewinski organisiert wurde. Es gab ein wunderbares 3-Gänge-Menü. Dieses bestand aus:

1. Brot mit Aufstrich.
2. Filet mit Ofenkartoffeln Salat und Gemüse.
3. Verschiedenen Häppchen Nachtisch, wie ein Löffel Mousse au chocolat, einem Stückchen Vanillekuchen mit Pfirsichkompott und einem Macaron

Selbstverständlich trugen wir alle auch nicht einfache Kleidung, sondern zeigten uns – was dies betrifft – von unserer vornehmsten Seite. Anstelle von Pullover, Jogginghose und Crocs waren an dem Abend vielmehr Hemden, Anzughosen und Schuhe angesagt. Heine hat auch das Hemd und die Krawatte, die er von Schülern geschenkt bekommen hat, getragen.

Das sah dann im Kontrast auch ziemlich lustig aus, da alle anderen schicke und schlichte Hemden getragen haben und das Hemd, welches er geschenkt bekommen hat, ein buntes Hawaiihemd war. Auch unser Messroom war so schön geschmückt, wie ich ihn noch nie erlebt habe. Und all das wurde in kürzester Zeit mit den provisorischsten Materialien von Luis und Justus aufgezogen. Wie zum Beispiel Seerosen, gefaltet von Lilia, aus Servietten.

Kurz darauf wurde dann Heine reingebeten und sein Essen serviert, denn heute gibt es keine Schlange, um das Essen zu holen, sondern einen Tischservice durch die Galley Crew. Heine und die restlichen Erwachsenen bekamen selbstverständlicherweise auch ihren eigenen Tisch, welcher sogar auch mit echten Gläsern bestückt war, während sich ein Tisch mit grünen, ein anderer mit weißen Plastikbechern oder noch ein anderer mit Metalltassen zufrieden geben musste, da wir von allem nur eine für gerade so einen Tisch reichende Menge besitzen.

Letzten Endes war der Abend ein voller Erfolg, was man auch gut an der allgemein sehr positiven Stimmung nur unschwer erkennen konnte.

Was heute sonst noch so geschah:

Morgens sind wir früh aufgestanden und unser heutiger Projektleiterpraktikant Jakob (First Officer) hat uns auf unsere Stadtführung in St.Georges vorbereitet. Nach dieser Führung von einem einheimischen Guide gab es noch einen kurzen Free–Shore–Leave und später eine Pathway Präsentation von Franka über die Natur von Bermuda.

We are now back aboard the wonderful Regina Maris. Many of us were looking forward to this moment and on the other side, a lot of us were sad that our beautiful time in Costa Rica has come to an end.

And back on board, we all have to get back in the ship’s system and rhythm with all the rules and tasks we have to care about. For example, the anchor watches or the lost and found box. All of it is more difficult than expected (at least for me).

Unfortunately, these were not the only things which caused us some problems because we also had to take all our belongings, which we didn’t want to carry with us through Costa Rica, out of cabin one. We had stored everything for the last three weeks in this one cabin.

The problem with this was that a lot of our things started to mold. Luckily my backpack was watertight and everything which was inside stayed clean, so I just had to clean the straps of the backpack. Another thing which we have to learn again are the rules and time routines.

This is also why we had a big announcement today from Kilian about the rules on safety precautions. We talked around 30 minutes about things we should do, things we should not do and that we have to watch out for the others also to guarantee everybody’s safety on board.

After that, we got another announcement from our project leader and teachers about the schedule on board. In this announcement, we spoke about the things which had to be done today and who would be responsible for them.

Basically, these are all things and systems we already know from the two and a half months we were on the boat before Costa Rica. But the crew and the teachers recognized that we unlearned a lot of it in the three weeks while our Costa Rica time. But in my opinion, we will relearn all these things really quickly.

Here on board, we have our very own lost and found system loved by everyone. So the story I wanted to write about is: I lost (forgot) my laptop in the mess room and Thomas, our project leader, found it. Yesterday, I just wanted to use my laptop but couldn’t find it in the laptop box and I also remembered that I didn’t put it back in there. So I asked Thomas if the laptop was in the lost and found and yeah, it was in there. Now I had two options:

1. Wait until Sunday to buy it back for 50 cent
   Positive and Negative aspects:
   Costs 50 cent
   I have to wait until Sunday
   
2. Do something creative, funny, or beneficial for the group (or at least parts of it) to get it back instantly.
   Positive and negative aspects:
   I can get my laptop back instantly
   I have to use my brain to be creative
   I don’t have to pay the 50 cent
   I may have to embarrass myself
   I decided to be creative, but at first, I had no idea what I could do. For example, Ella just wrote a poem about why she needs her shoes back and read it out in front of us all. Tobi rapped us the story of why he left his hoodie on the stairs. So I spoke with Johanna and Luis about the issue and got inspired to learn how to juggle with three balls that same night. Then I will wake them the next morning with a coffee, some breakfast, and chips and, in addition, I show them what I learned last night, while singing: “Guten Morgen lieber Thomas, guten Morgen lieber Mats. Mein Laptop ist hier verborgen und das soll nicht mehr so sein. Guten Morgen Sonnenschein, guten Morgen Sonnenschein.“ And I can assure you that this performance was not very impressive, but they were impressed with my engagement to stay up at night to learn how to juggle, so they gave my laptop back to me. Some other ideas I had were dancing during the daily announcement, singing through the ship speaker, or doing some duties for free like galley and heads & showers.

Later that day, some students started baking cinnamon rolls, even the raw doe of which tasted very good. It’s just too bad that everyone could only get one and a half of them.
