Mountainbiken in den Wolken…

… denn genau das war für uns heute der erste Programmpunkt. Nach dem Morgenmeeting haben wir uns ganz schnell fertig gemacht um das Schiff zu verlassen und unseren Tag zu beginnen. Wir wurden in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt, die nacheinander Mountainbiken waren. Wir hatten großes Glück, denn die Regina Maris hatte, obwohl sie zwei Wochen lang auf den Azoren waren, wegen der Wetterbedingungen nicht die Möglichkeit dazu gehabt. Wir wurden also mit Autos auf den obersten Teil der Insel gebracht, wo uns eine atemberaubende Aussicht erwartete…oder auch nicht.

Der gesamte Berg steckte nämlich in einer riesigen Wolke, weswegen man nur etwa 10-20 Meter weit sehen konnte.
Die Abfahrt war aber natürlich trotzdem großartig, auch wenn die Windböen einem den Tau ins Gesicht gefegt haben und das Fahrrad ab und zu mal einen Stoß von der Seite bekam.

Den Tag gestalten

Völlig durchnässt, aber mit einem breiten Lächeln im Gesicht, haben wir die Fahrräder an die nächste Gruppe abgegeben und uns mit den 10€ Essensgeld ein Mittagessen besorgt. In der Freizeit wurden verschiedene Dinge gemacht, wie Free shoreleave, aber es hat auch eine Gruppe an dem Bordbuch und den Hoodies im Café Sport gearbeitet.

Ich saß mit einer kleinen Gruppe unten am Steg, wo wir unseren Teil zur Tradition auf der Insel beigetragen haben. Hier hinterlässt nämlich jedes Schiff, das anlegt, ein selbst entworfenes Gemälde/Design von seinem Schiff. Die Materialien dafür haben wir glücklicherweise vom Schiff bekommen, so dass wir direkt anfangen konnten und bis zu den Rib Runs zurück zu unserer Peli daran weitergearbeitet haben. Auch den Abend über wurde von vielen noch fleißig an diversen Dingen gearbeitet.

To do’s

So haben wir also schon eine ganze Menge der Dinge getan, die hier auf den Azoren üblich sind. Abgesehen davon sind aber noch viele weitere Beschäftigungen möglich. Es werden zum Beispiel Wal- und Delfin Touren angeboten. Man kann aber auch wandern gehen, Paintball spielen oder ins Walmuseum gehen.

Wir haben vorgestern so ein Ocean Race Boot anschauen dürfen, das war ja mal so nice. Teresa ist die beste und coolste Nudel auf dem Schiff. About our day:

At about 11 am we started to approach our birth in George town. After a short Morning meeting and a very early lunch, we were able to go on free-shore leave. Most of us just walked around or went to the supermarket. That escalated a little tiny bit, so now we’ve got 208 packs of Ramen on board…(plus the ones we had before already).

As soon as we all got on board again we left the harbour and anchored not too far away.
Later in the evening Klara had her Pathway Presentation and afterwards we all got snickers, jajjjjjj!!!!

History of our Peli:

The Pelican of London used to be a Cargo Ship running from northern France to Island, after it was build in 1948. Afterwards she would be fishing in Britain for a while. Luckily Graham Nilson wo was a Navy Officer, found the ship and was able to purchase it and convert it to Pelican of London. It turned out really good and was constructed with a Arabhau rigging, which was supposed to be able to sail closer to the wind (which is debatable).

Memory’s of our Captain Chris Blake:

„I’ve been lucky enough to work on other sailing ships around the world. I’ve worked in England and also in Hongkong on a sailing ship, the Gi Fung. And then Britain gave Australia a bicentennial Birthday present for their 200 anniversary, the „Young Endevour“. I was there for the construction of the vessel and we took it out there to Australia with 12 young people from each Australia and England.

But then when we got to Australia I was out of a Job, so I went to Seattle, where I was living at the time and was gonna make Millions, by briding dogs. The Vet got most of the money though… So I had to go back to sea, and the next job I had was on a sailing board in west Australia.

It sailed up and down the west coast of Australia and was based in Free Mantil. From the Liiuwin, I went to a Japanese sail training ship. We actually converted the ship in Poland, sailed it to the coast of America and then took it to Japan, where I helped set up a sail training organisation, lived for two years and ate loads of rice (which was very nice).

From there I went to join the Endeavour Repica, which is an exact copy of captain James Cook vessel and sailed around the world twice, unfortunately the ship didn’t go very fast, so it took us 11 years, which my wife wasn’t very impressed with.

After that I set up a sail training organisation in Bermuda. It is still sailing today, taking young people from Bermuda , around Bermuda and occasionally to American and down to the Caribbean.

I have been relieving on here for the last 4-5 Years. It is a very steady ship, it is not the fastest ship, but it is quite comfortable in rough weather.“

Departure without issues

Today we left Santa Cruz and Tenerife. This has been the first departure without any problems, so we are still crossing our fingers. We were able to leave at about 10:30 which led us to eating lunch on the Atlantik.
You could see people wrapping presents and drawing Christmas cards all over the ship or the messmen taking fresh baked cookies out of the oven, so we all can feel the Christmas air.

Behind the scenes

Another big talk ist the hair dyeing which Fred and Ole started, so now many people got purple highlights in their hair.

Right now we’re also playing a game on board, which is called „murder“. There you get the name of another person and have to „kill“ them, by telling them „your dead“ when you’re alone with them.

Even though we started only last evening, there are already only about five people left.

Reflection interviews

I intended to do a video about self reflection, since were starting our talks with the teachers in the next days, but unfortunately were too far from land for it to be possible, so I wrote the Interviews down for you:

„What do you like most about our live on board?“

Rosalie: I just really really liked sailing and enjoy the peaceful and quiet moments on the ocean.
It isn’t very peaceful or quiet here but for me it’s still very enjoyable.

Fredi: Mostly I enjoy being with my new friends on the ship and talking with crew members.
And also I love the sailing and the view on the sea.

Sophie: I really like that you always know where you have to be, but you can also hang out with your friends on the poopdeck. For example today, I did Christmas cards together with Fredi and we did lots of drawing.

Klara: What I love is, that everyday is different for us. On the Atlantic there will probably be more of a routine but now there’s always something new. And I also like the order and structure of our day.

Anna L. : I kind of expected the unexpected and thats meeting it very well.

Fredi and Sophie: Also we expected to be sailing a lot more, like 4-5 months but now were mostly on land.
But it also gives us chances like seeing Marokko. So not always having a plan can be grand as well.

Greta: I really like that we are all working together so much as a team and also what has to be done for sailing, so setting sails or climbing.

Gregor: I really like living around so much nature, because your getting up with the sunlight and sleep shortly after the sunset. So being so close to our environment and actually seeing the climate change.

I also enjoy teaching the lessons here, since I have to teach everything two times which gives me the chance to really improve my teaching skills.

Jih: I just really like helping out and contributing to something.
Sail-handling is the most fun part I suppose, but I miss watch-keeping, which is probably really weird.

„What do you want to do after OceanCollege and how is this Journey helping you?“

Rosalie: I don’t have big plans for my life but i wanna do my abitur and with all the impressions here it will for sure help me to choose, what I wanna do. So maybe I’ll find something that catches my eye and im gonna study architecture or something like that…

Klara: I don’t really know what to do afterwards but OceanCollege has surely helped me to become more open minded to do great things in the future.

Anna L.: I love the navigational part and I am pretty focused on learning it, because after OC I probably want to study it and become like first mate, second mate or maybe even captain.
