An exciting morning

This morning I was woken up by Fufu yelling: “JUNOO! There’s a shark outside!” I immediately ran on deck, following Fufu and Juno, who were on galley duty that day, which was why they had already been awake.

And there it was: A small shark swimming around right in front of the Johnny – what better way to start your day?

For breakfast, we had very delicious pancakes, the best ones so far in my opinion. Soon afterwards, we discovered that the Thor Heyerdahl had anchored right next to us.

Since she is a school ship as well, we were very excited that we got to see her. Unfortunately, there are currently no students on board because they’re on land, otherwise we would have loved to meet them.

Surviving on a lonely island

Later that morning, we were divided into two groups: One group had to start packing for Costa Rica and the other one took the dinghy to explore the San Blas Islands.

For most of us, it was the first time stepping foot on the islands and we were completely stunned. There were palm trees everywhere, and combined with the clear, turquoise water, it almost looked unreal.

Many students said that it was the most beautiful landscape they had ever seen – and definitely a huge highlight on our journey so far.

On the islands, we could swim, snorkel and walk around to explore the untouched land. Well, untouched except for the trash that was lying around everywhere. It surprised us how many cans and plastic bags we could find, but fortunately, the second group picked some of it up.

While we were on the islands, we pretended to be participants of the series “7 vs. Wild”, planning our imaginary shelters and the way we would provide ourselves with enough food if we were stranded there.

Packing up

Back on the Johnny, the second group started with the dinghy and we had to face the huge challenge of sorting all of our belongings, deciding whether to take them to Costa Rica or not.

Even though that took up a lot of time, most of us had imagined the process to be more difficult than it was after all. We needed a bit more time than expected, but once we were at least kind of ready, we could finally get to the highlight of the day.

The Caribbean (slash Atlantic) Ball

Due to the risk of falling overboard, we haven’t been able to hold our Atlantic Ball yet, so it was about time to change that! Our Caribbean Ball took place on one of the San Blas Islands at a picturesque little beach restaurant.

When we arrived, we immediately hung up our hammocks, saving the best spaces in between the palm trees (always looking out for falling coconuts, of course). Then, we had some time to go swimming, swing on a beautiful swingset in the water, or simply sit in the sand and enjoy the view.

Later on, we ate coconut curry with optional tuna in the restaurant. For dessert, we had coconut cake and passion fruit juice.

The galley team had prepared dough for “Stockbrot”, which was then made at our bonfire. After a while, some people from the UK joined us there and we got to practice our English. They were very interested in our journey and we talked a lot.

At some point, we all went to sleep in our hammocks peacefully… until about 2 a.m.

An unfortunate surprise

That was when it started raining very hard. At first, we all stayed in the hammocks, hoping that the rain would stop soon, but there was no point in waiting. When we had finally all gone to the dry restaurant, our hammocks, sleeping bags and clothes were soaking wet.

We tried to get comfortable on the ground, benches, and tables and put on dry clothes if we still had some left. Most of us slept in their wet sleeping bags, but a few lucky ones still had dry towels that they could use as blankets. During the night, it rained like before repeatedly, so we had made a good choice in moving.

Even though we didn’t get much sleep and some were totally eaten up by mosquitoes, it was quite an adventure and we had an amazing time.

Ankunft in Panama

Ankunft auf den San Blas Inseln in Guna Yala

Heute war der Tag, an dem wir zum ersten Mal den östlichen Rand der wunderschönen San Blas Inseln erreicht haben. In der Ferne sahen wir die kleinen Tüpfelchen von Palmen am Horizont und ehe man sich versah, war man dabei, fünf kleine Inseln zu umkreisen, kleine Kanus zu beobachten, die mit Einheimischen vorbeikamen und Schildkröten im Meer zu suchen.

Heute war ich etwas krank, weshalb ich nur einen Teil des Tages mitbekommen habe.

Wie ist es, an einem Tag krank zu sein an Bord?

Da ich heute krank bin, hatte ich die Idee, darüber zu schreiben, wie es ist, an Bord krank zu sein. Es kommt meistens auf die Person an und darauf, wie diese sich fühlt.

Entweder man liegt den ganzen Tag im Bett und kuriert sich aus oder man hält sich einfach ein bisschen zurück. Das Doofe, wenn man flach liegt, ist, dass man möglicherweise schöne Aktivitäten oder spannende Segelmanöver verpasst.

Wenn eine:r von uns krank wird und die meiste Zeit zumindest versucht, im Bett zu liegen, um sich auszuruhen, kommen wir eigentlich nur nach oben, wenn es etwas zu essen gibt oder es wichtige Ansagen gibt. Beziehungsweise liegen wir irgendwo an Deck herum, wenn es zu warm ist, um im Zimmer zu liegen und zu schlafen.

Das Schöne daran ist jedoch, dass man dabei auch stets von den anderen umsorgt wird und sich seinen Tee oder Wasser nicht selbst holen muss. Aber am schönsten ist es natürlich, wenn man wieder wohlauf ist und sich wieder Aufgaben wie dem Beibootfahren widmen kann.

Le 2e Janvier

Salut tout le monde,

aujourd’hui, le blog sera en français, comme c’est une partie de notre note. Je vais vous raconter cette journée et je vous expliquerai comment se passe un parlement des élèves, parce qu’il y en avait un hier soir. À ceux qui ne parlent pas beaucoup de français : au contraire de nous, vous pouvez utiliser des traducteurs, alors n’attendez pas ! Vous avez de la chance !

Encore une autre chose : ce blog raconte le jour d’avant-hier, mais il est écrit le 4 janvier, parce que notre « Media-Handy » avait disparu. Mais un autre blog vous le racontera plus en détail.

Le matin, il y avait un petit-déjeuner super bon avec des pancakes ! (Merci à la cuisine).

Après, la moitié d’entre nous avait un séminaire très intéressant. On a parlé de comment envoyer un signal de détresse (🆘) et des autres signaux : on a trois appareils 📟📡📞 pour envoyer et recevoir tout près de nous (UKW) et un autre pour les fréquences plus longues, pour toute la planète (GW/MW). Après la théorie, on s’est entraîné un peu et on a « téléphoné » avec ces talkie-walkies.

Le déjeuner était aussi très bon : du riz et des légumes avec (pour les carnivores) du poulet. Jusqu’au café, on a eu « InSel » et, le soir, il y avait des ateliers : un club de débat et un atelier de guitare pour les débutants.

Le soir, le capitaine nous a fait un compliment parce qu’il n’y avait aucun problème toute la journée. Nous aussi, on a dit merci parce qu’il avait entendu et réalisé quelques-unes de nos suggestions du parlement des élèves la veille.

C’est comment, un parlement des élèves ? Au dîner, le parlement est annoncé et, après, on se rencontre, sans profs, etc. Le parlement commence toujours avec la demande des réélections, mais c’est toujours une blague. Après, les députés nous présentent la première issue, et la discussion commence. Au début, c’est calme : on lève les mains avant de dire son avis, mais après 10-15 minutes, toute la structure est partie et on parle juste, mais si c’est trop fort, les députés nous calment. Le parlement continue comme ça pour quelque chose entre une demi-heure et une heure. Finalement, quand toutes les décisions sont prises, on finit le parlement et c’est tout.

Finalement, on peut dire que c’était une belle journée et qu’on a appris beaucoup.

The New Year on the Johnny

We started into 2025, which still sounds unbelievable for most of us, with a countdown, watching the fireworks on Aruba (an island we were just sailing by) from afar, a little party on the stern deck and… having watch.

I apologize for the quality; sadly, it was a little too dark to get good pictures.

Jana, Frieda, and me, the Port B watch, got the 00:00 to 04:00 watch on the first day of the new year. It was nice because we had to be awake anyway, our sleep schedule is 04:00 to 11:30 by now, so it was alright, but also a bit sad because we couldn’t celebrate all that well with the others.

Thanks to the time difference between home and here, we had two New Years to celebrate: The one at home, which we celebrated at 20:00 and the other one according to Johnny time. During the evening, we did a quiz, watched a little greeting video from our former medic Jakob and followed the typical German tradition Dinner for One.

Our medic Christian held a nice speech: “Ich wünsche allen eine sehr gute Gesundheit, damit ich auch nicht so viel arbeiten muss. Auch sollt ihr alle an eure armen Angehörigen daheim denken, die eine ganze Menge trinken müssen, um genauso schön zu schaukeln wie wir.”

After watch, we all went into our cabins to sleep until 11:30, when we ate lunch and had our second watch of the day from 12:00 to 16:00.

During this watch, Frieda’s safety vest accidentally got triggered. We suspect it was because the vest didn’t dry properly, which led to the little salt ball in the vest dissolving. That salt ball is actually meant to dissolve when you fall into the water, as it triggers the vest.

Luckily, the watch before us had already made a DIY sun sail out of a hammock, so while we all brought sunscreen, water and a cap to watch, at least the person steering wouldn’t get a sunburn. While steering was mostly in the shadow, the port lookout wasn’t so lucky. There was always a discussion about which side we had to go to because not many people wanted to sit for 30 minutes at 30 degrees Celsius in the bright Caribbean sun.

Maybe apart from Jacob, who was enjoying a little sunbath and only put on sunscreen after we warned him about sunburns. While we were cooking in the sun, Hannes, who would have been in our watch if not for galley duty, cut up bananas and apples for the smoothies they wanted to make for teatime.

Ways to spend the afternoon

There are many ways you can spend your free time. Below, I’ll present some examples I found on my walk around the Johnny:

Some motivated people got together to do some sport, while others used the time to relax and laze around in hammocks.

Nothing is better than having watch on a nice afternoon, while all the others are lazing around on the deck, braiding hair (one of Nele’s favorite activities), writing journals like Juno, or simply relaxing.

Exhausted from all the work, our medic had to take a little nap in the sail-bunk, how this very comfortable place is called.

Many wild Johnnies with books or e-readers were spotted, completely entranced with their stories.

Another thing I saw was the gorgeous sunset above the sea, a sight not so rare on our journey.

Happy New Year

Morgens, nachdem alle aus ihren Hängematten aufgestanden waren und den Boden von Bonaire unter sich spürten sowie anschließend ein leckeres Frühstück hatten, ging es erst einmal eine Runde Schnorcheln im Meer, direkt am Pier. Auch wenn es direkt am Hafen war, war dies bisher der schönste Spot zum Tauchen. 🙂

Leider hatten wir nicht den ganzen Tag Zeit zum Schnorcheln, weil es schon weiterging Richtung San-Blas-Inseln.

An dem Tag hatte ich mit Helene und Kyrill Backschaft, weshalb ich tagsüber wenig mitvloggen konnte. Als wir dann nach dem Mittagessen mal Pause hatten, fing die Wasserschlacht mit Julius, Juno, Helene und mir an, bis irgendwann mehrere dazukamen und das ganze Deck voller Wasser war.

Nachdem die Wasserschlacht aufgelöst wurde und Helene, Kyrill und ich am Abend fertig mit der Backschaft waren, begann das Abendprogramm für Silvester. Am Anfang haben alle eine Art Vision Board für das nächste Jahr gemacht und danach ging es weiter mit einem Quiz, bei dem wir in Gruppen eingeteilt wurden. Meine Gruppe war Letzter, weil unser Grundwissen irgendwie nicht so ganz vorhanden war. 🥸

Zuletzt haben wir gemeinsam das Video von unserem lieben letzten Doc Jakob angeschaut. Wir sind sehr froh, dass es Dir gut geht und dass Du Deinen Job bekommen hast! 🙂 Gleichzeitig sind wir aber auch traurig, dass du uns auf den Azoren nicht noch einmal joinst und wir ohne dich bis Amsterdam fahren müssen. 🙁 Wir haben Dich lieb und hoffen, Du genießt Deinen Skiurlaub. ⛷️

Fynn ist währenddessen eingepennt und Hannes nutzte den Moment. 🌚

Kurz vor Mitternacht waren dann alle an Deck versammelt und haben darauf gewartet, dass der Zeiger auf Punkt 12 steht. Als es dann soweit war, haben alle gejubelt, sich umarmt und „Frohes Neues“ gewünscht. 🎊

Wir wünschen allen zu Hause ein frohes neues Jahr und hoffen, dass ihr einen guten Start hattet! 💕

Bonaire, one of the ABC Islands

Today, we made an extra stop on the island of Bonaire. It’s one of the ABC Islands, which were colonies of the Netherlands. We made an extra stop there because we needed some supplies for Fufu, who has an injury on her foot. We also stopped in Bonaire because we needed more medicine and a compressor.

Actually, we didn’t get “einklariert,” but the chef of the harbor was so nice and allowed us to go snorkeling, which was incredibly interesting. We saw a turtle and a lot of fish. There were also many jellyfish and unfortunately, some of us got stung by them.

This was the island with a beautiful sunset.

In the evening, our “Backschaft” made a buffet, which was so delicious and we were able to eat it on the pier. It was so beautiful, and we had a great view of the water. After that, because it was an unusual day, we got some sweets and Jana and Dan danced the night away.

All in all, it was a really unusual day. We had a lot of new experiences, and I would say it was just a wonderful day in the Caribbean Sea. 🌊

Noam’s Tag

Noam wachte auf und neben seinem Bett stand Hannes, der ihn wie immer nervig weckte. Danach stand Noam mit großem Hunger auf und schob sich ein Brot nach dem anderen in seinen Mund hinein.

Anschließend machte er seinen alltäglichen morgendlichen Rundgang übers Deck, wo er auf den halbtoten Toni traf. Dieser lag dort noch von dem gestrigen wilden Abend.

Später im Verlauf des Morgens wurde das Dinghy zu Wasser gelassen und Noam sauste mitsamt Media-Handy davon. Dies gefiel Hannes – der eigentlich an diesem Tag den Blogbeitrag hatte – gar nicht. Daher sah er sich gezwungen, sich den Tag von Noam anhand von Bildern zusammenzureimen.

Es begab sich, dass der tapfere SUP-Träger Noam sich auf den Weg zum Strand machte. An der Küste angekommen, musste Noam erst einmal seine auf dem Schiff angestaute Wut loswerden. Dies tat er, indem er laut artikulierte. Nach diesem kleinen Wutanfall fand Noam eine Gabel, die er triumphierend in die Höhe hielt.

Nach einem langen Strand- und Schnorcheltag ging Noam in die lang ersehnte Strandbar. Dort kippte er sich die ein oder andere Cola hinter die Binde.

Wieder an Bord legte sich Noam nach einem Abendschmaus in seine schwitzige Koje und dachte an Leonie von zuhause.
