Here we go again. Today is day 53 on board the Regina Maris and we are almost halfway through the Atlantic crossing.

Almost two months flew away in a hurry. It’s been easy to lose track of time with all the different countries we‘ve visited, but now‘s come the time to realise how long we’ve spent together and that we‘ve still got four months left to go. Crazy right?

The concept of time has always been something I couldn’t quite wrap my mind around. Especially on board, time has become something really weird. You leave land behind and a few days later, you‘re in a new country.

It feels like you‘re stuck in a matrix and not like you‘re that far away from home. You just see some type of blue for a bit and don’t see the distance we’re travelling like you would in a car. But then you notice it’s getting warmer and sunnier and you have no choice but to see the distance we‘ve put between us and home.

Even though I think the term home is also something we put a pause on for six months, calling a big sailing ship your home is something to be proud of and not many people get to experience that.

Right now I am sitting in a beanbag on the poop deck, enjoying the warm sun with beautiful music and the sound of waves.

This voyage truly makes me appreciate the little things. I have grown fond of watching everyone say good morning to each other. It’s the same thing every morning, but it’s so valuable to hear a sweet good morning and to be able to say this every day. Enjoying nature as calm or as wild as it may be, I always catch myself holding my breath.

It’s crazy to just casually look out the window and see the ocean. Even if I see this every day, I will never stop being speechless because of its power and beauty.

We as a group have grown together and there are so many memories to keep and to make. The mid Atlantic ball is being planned and Christmas and New Year’s Eve aren’t that far away anymore.

Still, being without your regular surroundings took some time for many of us to get used to. This will be my first Christmas without my family and our usual traditions. Everyone has a different type of homesickness, but for most people here on board, it’s not wanting to go home, but missing a person, a routine or simply in my case: A real piano.

I love playing the piano and it’s great that there’s an e-piano on board, but it will never feel the same. Playing the guitar has been my solution and singing will always cheer somebody up.

The days are short, but packed full of memories and wanting to tell this, to your parents for example or others like siblings and friends happens to me every day. Not being able to do so can be sad, but seeing how fast these two months flew by, shows that time, as mentioned above, is a weird quirky thing that can’t really decide if it wants to move fast or slow. Maybe a bit of both.

Here on the Reggie, we live day by day, step by step and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Enjoying the time we have is the best and only thing we can do and we’ll be back sooner than we‘ll realise.

Eine Ode an unsere Kaffeemaschine

Es ist etwas Schreckliches, unfassbar Herzzerreißendes und Frustrierendes geschehen!

Unsere Kaffeemaschine, Hannes geheime Liebe, ist kaputt gegangen, einfach so und unser kaltes und „crazy water“ auch. Aber erst zum Wichtigen. Eventuell hat der Ein oder Andere mitbekommen, dass unsere tolle von allen geliebte unfassbar moderne und vertrauenswürdige Kaffeemaschine häufiger mal den Geist aufgibt.

Matthias kann ein Lied davon singen und hat sich dazu entschieden: Nee, jetzt gibt es erst mal keinen Kaffee mehr ihr hattet heute schon genug.

Leider denken wir und vor allem die Crew nicht so, denn der Kaffe ist heilig an Bord, nichts geht ohne einen Kaffee oder Tee vor der Watch. Drum wird die Kaffeemaschine gerne mal neu gestartet oder die Schläuche werden gesäubert.

Jeden Tag muss außerdem der Kaffeesatzbehälter entleert werden, damit dieser nicht wieder überläuft. Zudem muss man hin und wieder auch mal den Behälter für das Milchpulver reinigen, damit dieses den Schlauch nicht verstopft (cheesy cheese).

Was man natürlich auch nicht vergessen darf, ist es, die Kaffeebohnen und das Milchpulver nachzufüllen, damit man überhaupt einen Kaffee bekommen kann.

Doch nichts von alledem war jetzt der Fall. Der Generator war überlastet, weil die drei der stromzehrendsten Geräte, der Wassermacher, der Ofen und die Waschmaschine angeschaltet und am Laufen waren und deshalb ein Kabel durchgebrannt ist. Was zur Folge hatte, dass beide Generatoren ausgefallen sind. Wir hatten deswegen bis gegen 15:00 keinen Strom und ein etwas verspätetes Mittagessen.

Nachdem der Strom endlich wieder vorhanden war, kam das große Entsetzen. Die Kaffeemaschine hat immer noch keinen Strom und wir können immer noch keinen Kaffee trinken. Zudem muss man jetzt tatsächlich den Wasserkocher für etwas anderes als Nudeln verwenden, z.B. um sich einen Tee zu machen.

Besonders Hannes, der schon mehr über die Kaffeemaschine weiß als sie selbst, trauert besonders um den Verlust seiner geliebten Kaffeemaschine. Er schraubt jetzt Tag und Nacht an ihr herum, weil er die Hoffnung noch nicht verloren hat, sie zu retten.

Doch wie vorher schon angesprochen, gab es auch Probleme mit unserem kalten und angenehm schmeckendem Trinkwasser und unserem „Crazy water“. Der Wasserschlauch hatte ein Leck und der Schlauch musste gewechselt werden, deshalb mussten wir 24 Stunden lang mit warmem und unangenehm schmeckenden Wasser zurechtkommen. Bis der Wasserschlauch (übrigens durch Hilfe von Hannes) wieder zusammengeflickt wurde.

Zurzeit haben wir wieder das gute Wasser, doch die Kaffeemaschine ist immer noch hin. Weshalb es immer noch schwierig mit dem Kaffee wird, doch wir haben immer noch die Hoffnung, dass Hannes sein Schätzchen retten kann.

Zick-Zacking

Hey guys, today, a little bit of sailing theory:

Maybe some of you who are following the course line have already noticed that our course isn’t straight all the time… even though we are still planning to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Why is that, you may ask?

It’s not because we’re drunk or because all our students can’t steer! We are doing it to sail faster and more efficiently.

Right now, we are going upwind. To maximize our speed, we’ve put up all the sails: The mizzen, the mainsail, the square sail and the schooner. If we were to go perfectly straight upwind, we’d only really use the square sail and the others would be much less efficient.

Why?

Because the other sails depend on side wind. The more the wind comes in at a 90-degree angle, the stronger the pushing force the sail can utilize.

Imagine it this way: The sail is not a flat line, it’s an arch. If the wind blows at the perfect angle, it only has one way to escape: Down the whole sail outward. The sail also provides much more area for the wind to fill. If the wind comes at a smaller angle, it only blows into part of the sail and it can escape in both directions.

Following this, it’s better not to sail completely straight. But why are we zickzacking then?

That’s what’s called wearing. From time to time, we have to change the side the sail is on because, as mentioned, we’re not sailing straight and would come off course. When we are wearing, we first turn a little so we’re sailing perfectly upwind. That’s when we start changing the side of the sail.

We take the sheet off the pin and completely release the preventer. The sheet is the rope that holds the sail in place and is used to tighten and fix it. Without a sheet, the wind wouldn’t push us forward but instead push the sail around.

The preventer is a safety rope for one of the worst-case scenarios: If the wind suddenly turns to the front, the sail can’t escape and is still fixed.

Now, we rapidly pull the sheet so that the sail swings over to the other side. Then we fix the preventer and that’s it!

Delayed Nikolaus

After being woken up early for my galley day, I searched for my right croc for five minutes and got progressively more angry.

When I opened the door though and looked into the narrow hallway everything was forgotten because what I saw was my right croc with some chocolate in it. 🙂

In front of every door there were shoes with chocolate in them and everything was decorated in Nikolaus-/Christmas-Style, with lights and further decorations. Everyone else who stood up, had a happy surprise on another day of our Atlantic-crossing.

Filipa and Strate were responsible for the chocolate-presents in our shoes. Leonore and Balthasar did a great job decorating everything and evoking at least a bit of a Christmas spirit in all of us. If you ask yourself now why this did not happen on the Nikolaus-Tag itself, there is a pretty simple answer: It was forgotten. But I think that way the surprise was even better.

Because I mentioned the Atlantic-crossing: For the last two days we had good wind, meaning we’ve been sailing with good speed. This also means the waves are getting bigger, leading the boat to roll pretty strong from time to time (this does not make cooking easier).

The main problem though is that during the nights the hatches have to be closed in order to keep water from getting in, resulting in our cabins to be turned into saunas. Only those with ventilators seem to have it better…

The times of our watches have changed as well, we have the exact opposite timespan now. If you had your watch from 9pm to 1am, it’s now from 9am to 1pm. As a consequence the classes have changed too, morning-class students are now in the afternoon-class.

After the stop in Cape Verde, everybody is getting used to boat life again. That’s good because that is what life will be like until we arrive in the Caribbean.

Damit wirst Du geweckt und stellst erstmal fest: Wir haben wieder Seegang. Ein Blick auf die Uhr sagt Dir, dass Deine Watch auch bald anfängt. Semi-motiviert schlurfst du aufs Maindeck und denkst Dir erstmal was zum…

Hektisch macht die andere Watch das Schiff sturmfest, während am Himmel Blitze von einer Wolke zur anderen zucken. Schadenfroh setzt Marie dich in Kenntnis: „Ich geh‘ jetzt trocken ins Bett und ihr segelt ins Gewitter hinein!“

Angespannt starrst Du auf das Blitzgewitter und wartest auf den Regen. Um nicht nasse Klamotten zu haben, zieht Marilen ihren Bikini an. Und Tilly hat recht: Es ist wie in einer Disco.

Zehn Minuten vergehen, zwanzig, vierzig. Nichts passiert. Dann steht es fest: Es liegt an unserem Alphaglück.

Und plötzlich drehen sich Deine Gedanken nur noch um die Leftovers, Getränke und genügend Bilder vom Gewitter, vor allem, weil Mathieu noch nie so ein Gewitter gesehen hat – es blitzte, aber ohne Donner.

Während des Steuerns unterhältst du dich mit Antonio. Das Hauptthema: Dinos und Tiere mit Beuteln. Deine Erkenntnis der Watch: 99% der Tiere, die einen Beutel haben, sind aus Australien. Das 1% hat ihn sich „angetackert“. Die Scheiße von Kühen ist mehr wert als das Fleisch.

Nach den vier Stunden gehst Du gut gelaunt ins Bett, weil es eine schöne Watch war.

Off we go!

Hello everybody!

Last day on land for the next two weeks, probably! Many of us haven’t really realised what is going on. Me also, I can’t get it into my brain, that the next time seeing land will be an island in the Caribbean. Crazy!

After our very delicious breakfast with porridge, bread and today also with yummy French toast, we lifted the anchor in Mindelo and drove to a different island of the Cap Verdes. There, we arrived about right after lunchtime. We reunited with the Johnny. They already drove there yesterday. To make the experience a bit more exciting we decided to not take the dinghi and rather to swim to the island.

We all put our clothes in a dry bag and were ready to swim. It wasn’t too far so luckily, everybody made it. On land we all put on sunscreen, our clothes and shoes.

Since we knew that the last years Ocean College always played soccer against the local people, everybody that wanted to play had to put on the white OC t-shirt. They didn’t know that we were coming that early and wanted to play against them so we had to wait quite a bit till they gathered their soccer team.

Good to know: Ocean College has never won against them ever in the past years. We took that by heart and made clear, that we had to win this game for us and for Ocean College.

Although it was hot and the sun was killing us from the outside we decided to give everything we have. Giving up was not an option. The game didn’t start off that good for us. They first scored one goal and a few minutes after a second one.

We couldn’t let that rest on our shoulders. They played good, but if we played as a team and more balls would actually get to the other teammate we knew, we could do it. Halftime was over and we switched sides.

From there on, we gave all we had. And it paid off. Kaspar scored the first goal. Now it was 2:1 for the others. Not too much time after Maxim scored a second goal from the distance into the top corner. We were now level with them.

A look on the clock said three minutes left. We knew, if we walked out with a tie we were also better than all the Ocean College Generations before us but to win would be even more legendary.

Right before the time was up, Nico scored the 3:2, which gave us the WIN. The first ever Ocean College, that won against the Cap-Verde-Team.

We made history, thanks to the brilliant defense of Maxim and Strate!

Because time was short we had to swim back to the boat, right when the game ended. Back on board, the Johnny and the Reggie lifted the anchor at the same time, we set sail, made some pictures with the drone and set off together to cross the Atlantic Ocean!

And from know on, one off my biggest dreams will start. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean with a Sailing Vessel.

Let the adventure begin!

Beach-Day

Today we had a beach day. We started the day with a morning swim and after that we said goodbye to Jimmy (Przemek). 💔

It was very sad because he was a very good officer and a really nice person, he is very funny and entertaining!
But now we have Arne on board and he is also really cool. He’s from Flensburg, but lives aboard a ship in Denmark. Normally he is working on the Danish tall ship Fylla, but now he’ll stay with us until the Azores.

Never mind, after we said goodbye we went to the beach and had fun with the guys from the Johnny. The water was so turquoise and all of us had a great time there, doing sports, swimming or sunbathing.

For example, there was a legendary spike ball match: Strate and Sali vs. Maxim and Kaspar. Strate and Sali won 3:2 in total and their prize was some hair color. Personally I get along very well with Benjamin from the Johnny. The saddest part about that is, that I regularly need to say goodbye to Benni. 🥲

Let’s continue… after the beach time we had “free shore leave” and we went in groups of six people. We then walked around and looked for Christmas gifts, also for our secret Santa, which we do with the whole crew.

In the meantime the science-pathway cleaned a small beach and after that we went back to the ship.

Yesterday Strate tried to give me a buzz cut but unfortunately we didn’t have a trimmer. So we got some scissors and cut off my hair…but it didn’t work out like we wanted.

Today, I went to the barber shop with Hannes, Kaspar and Maxim and got my hair fixed (now it looks so good. I’m sorry Mama). So, now I have a clean buzz cut just like Strate, Fränzel and Timo. Hannes, Kasper and Maxim got their mullets trimmed, which are now looking very sexy. 🔥

All in all, it was a very nice day and that’s everything for now. Again I’m sorry Mama. ❤️

Ankunft Kap Verden

Heute haben wir nach genau einer Woche auf See vor den Kapverden geankert, genauer gesagt vor Mindelo.

Unsere Länderbriefing-Gruppe hat uns, bevor wir mit dem Dinghi an Land gefahren sind, ein paar Informationen über die geografische, wirtschaftliche und geschichtliche Historie von den Kap Verden gegeben. Die Gruppe hat uns, als wir an Land angekommen sind, noch eine kleine Stadtführung durch Mindelo gegeben. Das war echt praktisch, weil wir so schon einen kleinen Überblick über die Stadt hatten.

Außerdem haben wir sehr interessante Sachen über die Kap Verden gelernt. Zum Beispiel; wie sich die schwarzen Einheimischen damals durch starken Zusammenhalt das Golfspielen erkämpfen mussten, weil damals nur die reichen weißen Engländer für den Sport befugt waren.

Deswegen haben die Menschen damals in der Nacht heimlich das Golfspielen geübt und dann den Engländern das Angebot gemacht, dass, wenn sie ein Spiel gewinnen würden, auch befugt sind, Golf zu spielen. Die Engländer dachten, dass sie auf jeden Fall gewinnen, weil die kapverdischen Einheimischen noch nie die Chance hatten zu gewinnen und sie nahmen das Angebot an.

Schon nach wenigen Spielen allerdings hatten die Einheimischen das Spiel gewonnen. Nun sind auch (fairerweise) die einheimischen Inselbewohner befugt, Golf zu spielen und einige von ihnen wurden sogar später zu Weltlegenden im Golfsport.

Ich finde es echt mega interessant, so viel Hintergrundwissen zu den bereisten Ländern zu bekommen und nicht einfach blind dort Urlaub zu machen.

Auch im Unterricht haben wir bereits vorgestern über das Dilemma der Menschen (überwiegend Frauen) erfahren, diese waren darauf angewiesen, Sand aus dem Meer zu holen um damit sich selbst und ihre Familien ernähren zu können.

Nach dem Länderbriefing hatten wir Free-Shore-Leave. Dort konnten wir die Stadt in gemischten Gruppen nochmals etwas genauer erkunden und bei Bedarf auch kleinere Besorgungen tätigen. Zum Beispiel fürs Wichtelgeschenk, gestern haben wir nämlich fleißig Lose gezogen, um dann an Weihnachten jedem eine kleine Freude zu bescheren. 😉

Beim Free-Shore-Leave waren wir in ein paar Supermärkten und Läden, wo es viel Schmuck und Klamotten gab. Diese waren bunt bemalt oder mit Muscheln bestickt.

Den Tag beendet haben wir alle zusammen mit einem Filmeabend und leckerem Schokokuchen. Gleich mache ich mit Talea noch meine Liegestütze und gehe danach direkt schlafen. Der Tag war wirklich sehr schön und voller interessanten Eindrücke. Gute Nacht 🙂

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

We were all especially excited for last night’s night watch from 21:00 till 1:00 because at midnight the Christmas time finally started with the first Advent Sunday.

The moment the new day started, Niklas played the first of all the Christmas songs we’re going to hear in the next weeks, starting with his favourite Christmas song: Little Drummer Boy. But that was just the first of many, many Christmas songs.

This day was even more special since the first of December is the first day to open the first small package or letter of our Advent calendar. For this special occasion, the whole watch (Jana, Ella, Timo, Franz, Jasper, Nico, Matthias) brought their own Advent calendars to the watch. We opened the small gifts/pictures all together at midnight while listening to all of our favourite Christmas songs.

During the day, our Captain Heine gave us and the teachers a sailing lesson, explaining how the wind pushes our boat, why we choose which course, how to turn the boat safely and effectively and other nautical principles and terms.

I believe we all learned many things and can now understand much better why the crew makes what decisions.

After that, we cleaned the whole ship in our weekly deep clean. We weren’t happy at all to clean but were very happy in the end that everything was cleaned up and tidied up.

In the clean messroom, we hung up Christmas lights and other decorations to create some Christmas feeling. Later that day, in my free time, I lay in the beanbags, listened to music and enjoyed the african sun.

It is very new for all of us to have this different Christmas experience – listening to Christmas songs while enjoying the nice weather of about 25-30 degrees Celsius in a T-shirt, on a ship in the middle of the ocean with nothing but water around us.

It really doesn’t feel like Christmas here.

Ich habe ihn durch mein ganzes Bett gespannt und öffne ihn jetzt jeden Morgen mit den Leuten, die mich wecken. Euch natürlich auch einen wunderschönen 1. Dezember und Advent.
