Das Highlight unseres Tages ist immer die Nightwatch, also lasst uns mehr darüber reden:

1. Lifehacks, die wir in der Nightwatch für uns entdeckt haben:

1.1 Kreatives Nudeln kochen

Eines Nachts begab es sich, dass Miriam und Sonja Hunger bekamen, also gingen sie auf eine Nachtwanderung zum Kühlschrank und wollten sich Reste anbraten. Doch plötzlich realisierten sie es… DER GENERATOR IST SCHON AUS.

In ihrer Hungersnot suchten sie hektisch im Raum herum und entdeckten ihn….den WATERCOOKER. Die Nudeln aus der Cabin gekramt, reingeschüttet und angestellt. Nach einigen Malen Überkochen hatten sie schließlich den Dreh raus. Das Ergebnis waren köstliche Nudeln mit Butter und Salz.

1.2 Nächtliche Fitness auf Diät

Eines Nachts begab es sich, dass Miriam und Sonja realisierten, dass sie zu viele Nudeln mit Butter gefuttert hatten. Also mussten sie ran an den Speck. Zwischen Liegestützen und Wandsitzen gab es auch mal ein Stückchen Schoki.

Man muss sich ja auch mal was gönnen. 🙂

1.3 Fit in der Nightwatch, Jana-Style

Wenn man um 01:00 nachts zur Watch aufsteht, kommt es vor, dass man müde ist. Jana als professionelle Tee-Beraterin hat immer den passenden Tee parat, vor allem wegen ihres tollen Tee-Adventskalenders.

Größte Empfehlung: Lax Active Tee von Lord Nelson.

Der größte Struggle bei der Nightwatch ist immer das Wecken der Kameraden. Also mussten wir uns eigene Techniken ausdenken.

2.Wecken in der Nightwatch:

2.1 Lieder dichten für Benji

Benji war immer ein besonders schwerer Weck-Fall. Rütteln & Schütteln half nichts mehr, da musste ein Rap her:

Benji wach auf, Du bist jawohl kein Lauch,
Benji wach auf, wir trommeln auf Dein Bauch.

Wir wollen gleich fett ratzen gehen,
Dass wir dich wecken, gern geschehen,
Wir hoffen, Deine Watch wird fein,
Dann springen wir ins Bett hinein.

Nh Kartoffel bist du auch nicht,
Du musst jetzt gleich zur Nachtschicht,
Nicht, dass Jimmy dann dumm schaut,
Alpha Watch is out.

An der Vortragsweise ist noch zu üben, die war nämlich bis jetzt immer mit Lachflashs gefüllt…

2.2 Matheaufgaben in aller Früh

Um 05:00 morgens sind die meisten im Tiefschlaf, da muss man sich schon was besonderes ausdenken, um ihre Gehirne anzukurbeln…MATHE.

Wenn man dann fragt: „Was ist 7×6?“, ist von 12-56 alles dabei, aber die 42 wird meist ausgelassen.

Da bekommt der Satz vom Mathelehrer: „Wenn ich dich um 05:00 anrufe, muss die Lösung wie aus der Pistole geschossen kommen“ , eine ganz andere Bedeutung.

2.3 Malte-Style

Manche Kameraden schlafen sogar nach der Mathestunde nochmal ein. Wenn man dann schon das dritte Mal zum Wecken kommt, hilft nur noch: „Wie viele Finger zeige ich?“. Der Trick dabei ist: Mit einer Hand zeigt man versteckt hinter dem Rücken noch einen Finger, wie Malte es uns schon lehrte. Das sieht dann so aus:

Malte: „Wie viele Finger zeig‘ ich?“
Kamerad: „5!“
Malte: (zieht den sechsten Finger hervor) „Veräppelt, 6!“

3. Andere Dinge die man machen kann während der Night-Watch, außer Watchen:

  • Brownies backen
  • den Klo-Verkehr beobachten
  • Mathieu‘s Sternen Stunden lauschen (von Orion bis Cassiopeia haben wir jetzt alles drauf)
  • Mathieu‘s Käse-Raub ausspionieren
  • Mathieu im Schach abziehen
  • über Funk Radio hören
  • Lasagne im Engine Room warm machen (dort ist es echt sehr heiß)
  • Raves veranstalten
  • für Tagesbericht-Schreiber englische Wörter im Duden nachschlagen
  • Öl aufwischen (Seegang ist nicht unser bester Freund)
  • Pärchen von den Sitzsäcken scheuchen und diese dann heimlich selbst einnehmen
  • Franz‘ Decke klauen
  • Handstände machen und dabei vom Captain erwischt werden
  • Gebräue mischen
  • leuchtende Wichtelmützen tragen
  • im Ankerraum treffen

Ab und zu begibt es sich auch, dass wir Segel setzen oder Halsen, aber auch nur an besonderen Tagen.

Time on board flies by like a bird…or a fish

Today, the morning was like every morning, but luckily without cockroaches. They are maybe still there, we just didn’t see any.

Instead we have a new pet since yesterday evening: Raphi, our medic, found a little sick black bird on the main deck and named him Xaver. His new home for the next two days is now a box, which normally has vegetables in it.

Our plan is to take him to Cape Verde and let him out there. Some of us thought about the bird’s back story and his thoughts about the situation.

Here is one interesting theory: Xaver lived on the Cape Verdes and wanted to fly over the ocean to the canaries, but we caught him on the way and are bringing him back now. When he will be home again, his whole family is going to be disappointed in him.

One thing is sure, we are definitely not uncreative and that’s just one example of all the crazy ideas. I hope, that he is not too scared of all the people watching him all the time, because now he is a little attraction.

The bird is interesting and definitely an important and funny thing on board. But way more important is the question: „When are we allowed to go for a swim again?“, because the weather is hot and the bad air in the cabins doesn’t really help against sweat all the time. So stopping the engine and going for a swim is an highlight for everybody.

Today it was a good time to do that, because the wind died. For such a big program point, the lesson needs to wait. So we did a break and nearly everyone climbed up the reeling to jump over board to take a short cool down from the hot sun.

After swimming and jumping from the „Klüverbaum“ to try some new tricks, our captain told us, that the watermaker is broken. That means, we couldn’t take a shower to wash up the salty water. That was bad news, because after a while, salt water starts to itch.

But in the end it was all good, because our great crew member Matthieu fixed the machine and we had water again. And that wasn’t that horrible as the long time period of eight days at the beginning of our journey, when we weren’t able to shower as well. So we are used to it.

While the others lay down in the sun to dry and become tanned, Franz, Maxim and I had the idea to take some music and we enjoyed the beautiful view over the sea from the „Klüverbaum“. The possibility to get tanned there was way better, because there are no shadows.

That is really important for Maxims and mine bet, which says, who is more tannend in the end of our voyage, wins. But no worry mom and dad, I still use sunscreen. 🙂

Over all the dolphins and whales we already saw, there is now another fascinating animal, we can see all day. All the flying fish which flies around our ship looks so cool. Yesterday some of them jumped unfortunately on board and died. But on the Reggie, we reuse everything. So Malte took one little flying-fish-filet and brought it as a handmade snack to our history lesson. That was really funny.

It’s really late and I already did my night watch, so now I want to go to bed urgently to be ready for our last school day of the week. And to be prepared for my next night watch, because we planned to open the first „door“ of our advent-calendars on watch all together. Good night everyone 😉

Die Versteigerung der Lost and Found Box…

Kurze Erklärung:

Die Lost and Found Box ist eine kleine schwarze Box, in der die unterschiedlichsten Gegenstände angesammelt werden. Alle Klamotten und Gegenstände, die im Messroom oder auf dem Deck liegen gelassen werden, sowie Klamotten, die nicht rechtzeitig von der Wäscheleine abgehängt werden, kommen in die Lost and Found Box.

Bis vor kurzem wurde diese jeden Sonntag herausgeholt, doch da unser Verlust an Gegenständen so hoch ist, kommt sie jetzt jeden Tag nach der Schiffsversammlung zum Vorschein.

Das ganze läuft so ab:

  1. Die Lehrer, Raphi oder Maxim zeigen den Gegenstand
  2. Entweder gehört er Dir und Du möchtest ihn behalten, dann musst Du daraufhin 50 Cent bezahlen
    ODER
  3. Niemandem gehört es und er wird versteigert
  4. Wenn es versteigert wird, ist der Startpreis immer bei 50 Cent und es darf NUR mit 50 Cent höher geboten werden
  5. Hat sich ein neuer Besitzer gefunden, kommt das Geld in die Eisessen-Kasse, mit der wir demnächst alle zusammen Eis essen werden
  6. Nachdem alle Gegenstände ihren alten oder neuen Besitzer gefunden haben, müssen die „Glücklichen“ zur PL Cabin und dort ihre Schulden begleichen

Verrückte Versteigerung

Malte

Malte verliert zwar nie seine Dinge, doch unnötige Gegenstände, wie einen einzelnen billigen Ohrring ohne Stecker kauft er (für 2€) sehr gerne. Wir haben alle persönlich nichts dagegen, da es uns nur schneller zum Eis essen verführt und es uns alle zum Lachen bringt, doch für Maltes Portemonnaie sieht es danach nicht so schön aus!

Unterhose mit Spuren und einem Loch

Diese Jungs-Unterhose kam auch Mal zum Vorschein. Doch komischerweise gehörte sie niemandem und niemand wollte sie haben. Alle Jungs haben wild diskutiert, wem sie wohl gehört und es wurden Vermutungen aufgestellt wie: „Das ist die von Johannes…“,, , der jedoch mit starken Argumenten dagegen konterte, doch einen Besitzer fand sie nie und sie landete im Müll.

Jana

Jana ist wohl die vergesslichste Person an Bord und verliert tagtäglich mindestens drei Gegenstände. Mittlerweile hat sie zwar eine starke Konkurrentin namens Sonja, sie kommt jedoch noch nicht ganz an den Champion ran. Obwohl teilweise Dinge für eine Woche verloren gehen und sie niemand findet, tauchen sie immer wieder auf. Wir würden alle nur zu gerne wissen, wieso Jana so viel Glück hat!

Die Unterhose des Kapitäns

Die Unterhose von unserem alten Kapitän hat auch mal seinen Weg zur Lost and Found Box gefunden. Leider konnten wir sie ihm nie wiedergeben, da er zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon weg war. Deshalb wurde sie natürlich versteigert!

Alle wollten die Unterhose zuerst haben, doch als Maxim den Preis aus Witz auf 4,50€ erhöhte, damit wir mehr Geld einnehmen, gab es keine Angebote mehr und Kaspar beschloss, dass Maxim sie jetzt kaufen muss. Im Nachhinein bekam sie dann Malte von Maxim geschenkt…der sich sehr gefreut hat!

Happy Birthday to…me

I absolutely hit the jackpot:

Yesterday already, I discovered some cockroaches in the kitchen drawer and soon realised: They would become my problem, if not today, then the day after, because I was going to have galley duty. And do the daily report. That would be a lot of work…

My inner clock woke me right on time, just before Sophia came downstairs to wake the galley-team: Miriam, Timo and me. Normally I would have slept as long as possible, but my early waking had a reason: It was my birthday and on those, I never sleep long. At home, I usually run into the living room, hug my family and unpack my gifts but here on the ship, birthdays are very different.

I didn’t find time up until 10am to look at my parents‘ gifts for me because galley duty took so long; we found some rotten fruits under the wheelhouse and re-sorted everything in the kitchen. During said break till twelve, all of us galley people took a little nap.

After that, we started preparing lunch: Gazpacho and leftovers from yesterday. Let me just say: The idea was good, but what we made of it was another thing. The gazpacho looked like vomit (credits to Janno, thank you for making me want to throw my food away because of your stupid jokes!) and was not of everyone’s taste, too much onion, too much garlic, etc.

After we finished doing the dishes and all meetings were done (no underwear in the lost & found today), I began with the most important part of the day: Making my phenomenal chocolate cookies, for which Talea and Antonio already prepared the dough yesterday. At the time I put the first portion into the oven, everyone was asking when the cookies would be ready to eat until Lisa shouted everyone back to class.

When I had the cookies ready, I started to hand them to everyone. Many wanted a second one and would literally have started a war for more. I already knew before that someone could bribe Maxim with white chocolate a lot, but those cookies were next level, he would have done anything to get more.

But jokes aside, everyone really liked the cookies and I was very positively surprised. I think I‘ll make them again, maybe on Hannes‘ Birthday in three days.

Because I made the cookies, I had no break before dinner and worked right through until Sonjas Pathway Presentation about fast fashion after it. I was extremely impressed by it and so were the teachers, Sonja was the first one to get an A on a Pathway Presentation. She really deserved it!

When all of us galley people finished the dishes and the cleaning of the kitchen, we finally had free time! I sat with my friends and played Dutch, they also had gotten me a few little presents which I really loved. I know, Malte will come soon to remind me of my time left wearing the birthday crown.

About the day I really can say, it was the most exhausting but also most memorable birthday I ever had. Excuse me now, my cards await me.

Food, Fuel and more

Today, we received a big food delivery at 11:00 and we spent a lot of time cleaning the food, storing it in the right places and documenting everything.

When we had time, we drew on each other’s skin with a pen we randomly found. For lunch the others from the galley team and I cooked 7kg spaghetti with green pesto.

After that, we were divided into two groups: From 14:00 to 15:00 the first group had to work on the ship and the others had free time. At 15:00 the groups switched, so the other group could have some free time as well.

At 15:00, our fuel for the next few months arrived. We received it along with the Johnny from a big truck. That was cool!

There was the possibility to visit the Alexander von Humboldt 2 in the free time. They are much bigger than us, have an air conditioning system and were freshly built in 2011 and are more like a cruising ship in our opinion.

Our sailing experience on the Reggie is definitely more real than theirs. But the crew was lovely and shout-out to them for the great tours they gave us of their ship.<3

When all food and fuel bunkering was finished and all students were on board again, the Johann Smidt already left the harbour. Minutes later, we got out of the harbor behind them.

All the tall ships that were in the harbour that day (in total five -> our dutch colleagues from the Morgenster, the Portuguese four masted ship Santa Maria Manuela, the German Becks ship Alexander von Humboldt 2 with the Canadian student Programm Class Afloat on board, our friends from the Johnny and ourselves) started sounding the horns for both Ocean College ships to say goodbye.

We answered them with the loudest horn of all of them. 😉

Then we drove out together, side by side with the Johnny and the drone was flying. We were so close to them that we could talk to them and we even danced together. Then the Johnny overtook us but we caught up with them overnight again.

Now we are both sailing headed for the Cape Verde’s and finally leaving Europe for more than four months from now. Our next time back in Europe will be on the Azores, we wish you a nice winter.:)

Umwege sind auch schön

Gestern kamen Christian und Timo verwirrt an Bord, begrüßt durch Eckart Strates Dünengesang. Heute ging es schon 2000m in die Höhe in Richtung Teide.

Zuerst haben wir gefrühstückt und uns noch ein Länderbriefing von der Gruppe über Teneriffa und Santa Cruz angehört.

Nach dem Länderbriefing haben wir uns schnell für die große Wanderung fertig gemacht, wobei man auch entscheiden konnte, ob man den kürzeren, angenehmeren Wanderweg, der „nur” drei Std. dauert oder den längeren, schwereren Wanderweg, der etwas länger dauert, nimmt.

Am Ende gab es eine Kombination von den beiden Wanderwegen, sprich der Weg war zwar lang, aber angenehm für alle.

Um 09:30 kamen schon die Busse für die SuS der Regina Maris und Johann Smidt. Die Fahrt dahin dauerte ca. 1,5 Stunden und war holprig und dazu sehr knapp, wenn ein Bus im Gegenverkehr in einer äußerst engen Bergstraße passieren wollte.

Hier eine Timeline von Sachen, die passiert sind:

  • 12:15 : Anfang der Wanderung
  • 13:00 : Pause inkl. Schokolade von Matthias, die von Jasper und Janno geschnorrt wurde
  • 14.00 : Eine weitere Pause , aber ohne Schokolade
  • 14:56 : Sind vor dem Teide (tolle Aussicht zur Seilbahn und Umgebung)
  • 14:59 : Zurück zum Café
  • 15.54 : Sind beim Café ( hat deutlich kürzer gebraucht als erwartet)
  • 16:30 : Alle sind in den Bussen Richtung R.M. und J.S. (Später gibt es BBQ mit der Johann Smidt )

Zusammengefasst gingen alle im Gänsemarsch Richtung Teide, einige mit aufgesammelten Stöcken als Wanderstock, die man am Wegrand finden konnte. Wenige mit Mützen und viele mit Regenjacken, weil es geregnet hat.

Am Ende hat es jeder überlebt und waren begeistert von der Aussicht dort.

Nun ist es Zeit für BBQ auf der Regina Maris mit den Leuten von der Johann Smidt. Danach werden alle vermutlich vor Müdigkeit umfallen.

Es ist jetzt in Teneriffa 20:51 und das BBQ ist fast fertig. Wir hatten eine sehr tolle Zeit gemeinsam mit den Schülern der Johnny und auch die verschiedenen Crews waren dabei. Es gab Würstchen und auch vegetarisches Essen und alle sind pappsatt geworden.

Sexuality-Education Workshops, new students and our phones

Today was a truly historical day: After five weeks on board, we finally got our phones back.

But let’s start at the very beginning: After the usual breakfast of porridge we were instructed to go ashore, where a workshop should take place. At this point, we didn’t know yet that we’d be talking about Sex, Drugs, etc. (please someone get the song reference) for the rest of the workshop.

„Tabu, but make it spicy“

Ashore, we got divided into four small groups with one teacher each. They handed us cards with different words about sexuality and soon we explained each other words like „Viagra“ and „erogene Zonen“ without actually saying the words out loud.

Can I ask you a question?

After the game of tabu, girls and boys got separated and we sat in two groups, again with one teacher (or medic) each. This time, they handed us sticky notes on which we could write down questions for the other gender/group. Then we switched the sticky notes, so that the girls answered the boys‘ questions and the other way round.

Newbies on board

We couldn’t finish the workshop yet, because of another exciting event: The two new students we’ve been waiting for, Christian and Timo, arrived. We greeted them with the legendary „tree-song“ and I truly hope they’re not too disturbed by the first impressions they got.

The main event today: Our phones

After lunch, we finally got our cellphones. We’ve been waiting and preparing ourselves for this moment for a long time, still it felt strange to be suddenly connected with the rest of the world again. For the next five hours, everywhere in Santa Cruz were small groups of teenagers, with their eyes glued to the screen, to be seen.

Most of us went to cafés with free wifi, but my group decided to use the Wifi of a Möbelhaus (what’s the English word again?) where we could call our friends and family in the coziness of brand new sofas (until we got kicked out…).

In the evening before dinner, we finally switched the sticky notes back and read the answers in our two groups. The girls’ group laughed a lot, because most of our questions were answered with „Typsache“, which is a great transition to my last point:

The „Zitate-Buch“

Thanks to Lisa, we now have a notebook, where everyone can write down funny quotes or phrases someone on board once said.

Here are some examples (with explanation):

„Sechs Jahre Gefängnis!“ – („six years in prison“; in Morocco, homosexuality is prohibited so we shouted this everytime two friends were walking hand in hand)

„Das Leben kann so schön sein. Aber auch so hart!“ – („Life can be so beautiful. But also so hard!“; Malte out of nowhere during a beautiful night watch)

„Muss schon wehgetan haben, war aber bestimmt ne Erfahrung fürs Leben“ – („Must’ve hurt, but it’s a life experience“; Malte about the injection in Hannes‘ butt)

„Bääähhhh! Die küssen sich!“ – („Ewwww, they’re kissing“; Raphi with the voice of a child during Star Wars)

Heute war der erste ganze Tag auf Teneriffa. Nach dem Aufstehen erfuhren wir, dass wir an den Strand gehen werden. Als wir dort ankamen, sollten wir uns Zeit nehmen, um über die Zeit nachzudenken, die wir jetzt schon auf dem Schiff verbracht haben.

Deshalb kam ich auf die Idee, eine Umfrage zu machen, um herauszufinden, wofür die Menschen auf dem Schiff dankbar sind:

Anneke: Ich bin dankbar für die Offenheit der Menschen, meine Gitarre und die schönen Tage, die wir hier zusammen verbringen.

Leonore: Für gutes Brot am Morgen.

Talea: Für die Freunde, die man hier gefunden hat.

Marie: Ich bin dankbar für Leonore.

Anna: Ich bin dankbar für die Sonnenauf- und -untergänge und ich bin dankbar für den Sternenhimmel.

Jasper: Ich bin dem Koch dankbar und den Menschen, die kochen. Ich bin Ingwer dankbar. Ich bin dem Lehrerteam dankbar.

Kaja: Ich bin dankbar, dass mein Leben hier perfekt ist.

Leon: Ich bin dankbar für unseren guten Koch und ich bin dankbar, dass die Gemeinschaft gut funktioniert

Jakob: Ich bin dankbar für das gute Wetter und das gute Essen.

Sophia: Ich bin dankbar für die Zeit auf dem Schiff. Ich bin dankbar, neue Kulturen und Orte kennen zu lernen. Ich bin dankbar für die Menschen auf dem Schiff.

Lisa: Ich bin dankbar für die Chance, hier auf dem Schiff so tolle Schüler:innen zu unterrichten und für alle Mikroabenteuer, die im Alltag passieren (spontanes Schwimmen auf dem Atlantik).

A day in the Galley

Every day, there are three people working in the galley. The watch from 05:00 to 09:00 wakes up the galley-team at 07:00.

A new galley-day begins every morning with preparing breakfast. For breakfast, there is usually bread with toppings, porridge and yoghurt.

After breakfast there is always a big dishwashing session. Dishwashing takes between 15 to 30 minutes every day. When you’re on galley-duty, it is your most stressful day ever. There is always something to do: Cutting vegetables, cooking and testing eggs to see if they are still good.

For breakfast, lunch and dinner you have to serve the food.

After lunch, there is another round of dishwashing, which takes much longer than breakfast. It is not 15 to 30 minutes but rather 30 minutes to an hour. After cleaning the lunch dishes, you immediately start preparing dinner: Cutting vegetables, cooking and testing eggs again.

When dinner is ready, you serve the food and, of course, clean the dishes once more, which takes another 30 minutes to an hour. The last task of the day in the galley is cleaning everything, including the floor. Yesterday, we checked all our food stocks to see what we need to buy. This is hard and takes a lot of time because you have to check every storage area and count all the food supplies.

Cleaning the galley every evening is one of the most important tasks because if the galley is dirty, cockroaches can appear. In the worst case, they might spread to the mess room and the cabins. Please, no!

My personal opinion:

I love working in the galley and I often spend my free time there. When someone from the galley team is sick, I happily take over their job. However, it is very, very nerve-wracking.

Kaja: An meine Eltern: Ich werde mich nie wieder darüber beschweren, drei Töpfe abzuspülen. Diese drei Töpfe sind nichts im Gegensatz zum Geschirr von fast 50 Personen.
