Finally good Coffee in Costa Rica

Our day started as usual at 06:30 in the morning. Today we had delicious fruits and burritos. It was quite good and Johnny and Reggie had a nice morning together. After breakfast, we had our presentation, which we had learned at the Spanish school. My group played a game. The others had prepared a theatre performance and some just talked about what they liked about the school and what they wanted to become.

After that, we all began packing our stuff from the Papay house. It was not so nice that it rained the whole morning because all of our tents and our stuff got wet. But we managed to pack everything. Afterwards, we said goodbye to our teachers and friends from the Reggie group and went to the bus.

After a two hour drive from Coronado, where most of us slept or ate watermelons, coconuts or mandarins (I ate six), it was a calm and pleasant ride. When we arrived at the coffee farm, the owner, Carlos, was already there to take our luggage.

Carlos is a very friendly man who has worked his whole life on this coffee farm since he was a child. He studied and travelled a lot around the world, but in the end, he always wanted to work as a coffee farm worker.

After we arrived and Carlos gave his welcome speech, which was very kind, we started setting up our tents. After 20 minutes, everybody was ready for the night and some of us took an evening nap.

After our delicious lunch, which was homemade rice with meat and vegetables, we had free time. Some of us went to the kiosk near the coffee farm and some, like me, went swimming.

It was a bit cold, but we got used to it. After some swimming, Hannes, Benni and I decided to run up the river and swim down the river, which was very fun and entertaining.

After our swimming session, we also went to the kiosk and got some snacks for the evening. We also enjoyed a beautiful sunset with a rainbow mixed in. The little village also had a nice football field, where we relaxed a bit and enjoyed our time.

After dinner, which was also very delicious, Carlos set a little bonfire for us and we had a very beautiful evening together. With a relaxed evening, the first day at the coffee farm ended.

Ein Tag in San José

Heute war unser letzter ganzer Tag in der Sprachschule! Außerdem waren wir in San José, der Hauptstadt von Costa Rica und haben diese in kleinen Gruppen mit einem Guide erkundet! Wodurch die Ansichten über den heutigen Tag sehr unterschiedlich ausfallen!

Deshalb habe ich einige Leute interviewt was für Eindrücke sie über San José gesammelt haben und wie sie die Sprachschule fanden!

Julian: 

Ich fand unsere Zeit in der Sprachschule sehr schön und die unterschiedlichen Aktivitäten haben mir gefallen. Besonders die Tour in San José, wo wir uns wichtige Orte angeschaut haben, während uns unser Guide ein wenig aus der Geschichte Costa Ricas erzählt hat, hat mir sehr gut gefallen und das Café mit der leckeren Maracujatarte war auch super.

Litti: 

Ich persönlich fand es eine mega coole Stadt. Es gab sehr viele historische Denkmäler, welche sehr cool waren, weil ich Geschichte liebe. Die Sprachschule fand ich auch richtig cool.

Die Lehrer waren alle so so lieb und ich hab‘ zwar nicht ganz so viel gelernt wie ich gedacht habe, aber ich fand’s trotzdem gut, noch mal alles so wiederholen zu können und es war auch so ein cooler Unterricht.

Ich bin auch wirklich gerne hingegangen, ich fand es auch mega cool, dass wir noch so Freizeit hatten und dann nach Downtown gehen konnten und einfach so bisschen rumlaufen, bisschen Bewegung haben, was wiederum eine große Abwechslung zum Alltag an Bord war. Ich fand San José mega cool.

Juno:

Die Sprachschule war eines meiner Highlights bis jetzt. Ich fand die Anlage mega schön, weil es so grün und voller Blumen war. Außerdem war es einfach schön, mal wieder schlafen zu können, ohne das alles wackelt und man musste auch nicht krampfhaft sein Zeug festhalten, wie es manchmal bei hohem Wellengang auf der Johnny ist.

Vor allem das Essen war mega lecker und mein absolutes Highlight war das Fruit Tasting mit den ganzen exotischen Früchten. Auch Obst wie Ananas, die man auch in Deutschland essen kann, waren hier so viel geschmackvoller.

Das Zelten war auch sehr lustig, obwohl Carlotta, Ella und ich zusammen in einem Zwei-Personen Zelt geschlafen haben, was ein bisschen kuschelig war.

Auch das Lagerfeuer mit der Reggie war sehr schön. San José war auch nice, aber wie ich finde nicht so besonders. Alles in allem war es eine geile Zeit und wir hatten mega Spaß!

Jacob: 

Ich fand die Sprachschule sehr schön, sowohl von der Location her als auch in Bezug auf die liebevolle und gute Betreuung. Der Spanischunterricht hat mir sehr Spaß gemacht und es war einfach insgesamt sehr schön mit euch allen.

Coronado and it’s delicious food

What a luxury!

Our second full day here in Costa Rica started with a delicious breakfast, which contained garlic bread, guacamole, scrambled eggs, cheese, and of course, the best fruits ever. But the best thing: We didn’t have to make it and we also didn’t have to do the dishes afterward. A real luxury.

The past is the past

As yesterday, we also had Spanish class three times today, with breaks and lunch in between. In my group, we started the day by playing memory with different typical Costa Rican animals. After that, we learned the „indefinido“, which is a past tense in Spanish.

A few of us had already learned it in school, but it wasn’t bad to refresh our memory a little bit. We practiced it by writing about our favorite memories on the ship so far and talking about them. We did it in groups of three and my group wrote about Cape Verde and how we swam with the turtles.

We also wrote an imaginary story about Tristan, who is a very negative person and describes a day in his life to a friend of his. Tristan had very bad luck in our stories with car crashes, lost glasses and many other negative things.

After a few more tasks to practice the newly learned material, we ended today’s class with another round of memory, but this time we had to find the opposite of a word, like black and white, for example. Tomorrow, our class will talk about food, which played an important role in today’s day too.

Love goes through the stomach

At 14:00, our cooking class started and we were divided into three groups again. We cooked something called „Patacones“, for which we peeled and cut cooking bananas, which were cooked afterward. Meanwhile, coriander, lemon, tomatoes and onions were cut to make a salad.

After the bananas were cooked, we smashed them and fried them afterward. In the end, we mixed refried black beans with onions and enjoyed our self-made meal. The fried bananas were the base and we could top them with the bean mix, the salad and cheese, which was super delicious.

To learn some more Spanish, we made a little vocab list of the ingredients we used and verbs of the things we did.

New and old, both are gold

Until dinner, we had some time to explore Coronado again. Yesterday, we already had the opportunity to have free shore leave and go to downtown, so we already knew a few parts of the city. But we also found some new spots, like a Taco Bell or a really nice second-hand shop where we found some cool things that needed a new home – aka our backpacks.

Sleep is overrated?

To end the day, some of us did their Spanish homework for tomorrow’s class, some were writing in their diaries or drawing something, some were playing a game or writing the blog and some were just chilling or already sleeping.

Costa Rica!

Today was the last day on board the Johnny before Costa Rica. It was a hard day. Before breakfast, we anchored and then after breakfast, the stress began.

First, we had to pack the sails. I personally was on galley duty and because we cleaned the galley in the afternoon, we weren’t allowed to cook after lunch. So we had to make lunch and dinner in the morning.

We had curry with rice for lunch and noodle salad for dinner. But it was very challenging to make the salad because we didn’t have fresh vegetables anymore (except for some carrots) and the only thing we had that wasn’t fresh were frozen vegetables that we used for the curry and peas. So we prepared noodle salad with carrots, peas, and some “Wiener Würstchen.”

After lunch, the final cleaning session began. Some cleaned the deck, some the galley and some the chambers. We had to clean everything (even the walls). The plan was to have tea time at half past three, but finally, it was six o’clock when we put the water and honey melons that Jacob and the others, who were on land for the check-in in Panama, had brought on the tables.

In the evening, before dinner, we were allowed to go swimming in the water. Then it was dinner time and we had to prepare bread for breakfast tomorrow, which we’re going to eat on the bus.

Vorfreude auf Costa Rica

Heute haben wir unsere Johnny für den Touristentörn geputzt. Der Touristentörn beginnt, wenn wir übermorgen nach Costa Rica fahren. Wir sind alle sehr aufgeregt und freuen uns auf Costa Rica, auch wenn es sich ein wenig komisch anfühlt, die Johnny für fast drei Wochen zu verlassen und sich vorzustellen, wie andere dann in unseren Betten schlafen.

Malte stellte uns den Plan für Costa Rica vor:

Zuerst geht es in die Sprachschule Academia Tica in der Nähe von San José, dort bleiben wir dann drei Tage. Daraufhin geht es zu Don Elis Kaffeefarm, auf der wir dem Prozess des Kaffeeröstens folgen und dabei sein können. Auch hier ist ein längerer Aufenthalt geplant.

Von dort starten dann die Expeditionen, bei denen wir in Kleingruppen reisen. Die fünf Tage werden wahrscheinlich sehr schnell vergehen. Zum Schluss werden wir uns alle bei den Bribri-Indigenen wieder treffen, wo wir unsere letzten Tage in Costa Rica verbringen, bevor wir uns zurück zum Schiff begeben.

Juno, unser Costa-Rica-Profi, erzählte uns vier spannende Fakten:

  1. Costa Rica ist nur 51.000 km² groß und somit kaum größer als Niedersachsen.
  2. Costa Rica hat eine unfassbare Biodiversität, nämlich 5-6 % der weltweiten Artenvielfalt, obwohl es nur 0,03 % der weltweiten Landfläche ausmacht.
  3. Fast 1/3 von Costa Rica steht unter Naturschutz, bestehend aus Nationalparks, Schutzgebieten und Reservaten.
  4. Costa Rica hat kein Militär.

Auf was wir uns am meisten freuen:

Jana: All die neuen Erfahrungen und Eindrücke und auf die Korallenriffe, die wir hoffentlich sehen werden.

Anna L.: Auf eigentlich alles, aber besonders die Expeditionen, auf Betten und Platz.

Daniela: Eigentlich alles, aber vor allem auf die Kaffeefarm und darauf, dass nicht den ganzen Tag alles wackelt.

Litti: Also, ich freu‘ mich auf jeden Fall auf die Sprachschule und dann auch auf die Expeditionen. Ich glaub‘, die werden richtig geil, und ich glaub auch, dass die Kaffeefarm eine richtig interessante Erfahrung wird, so zu sehen, woher unser Kaffee eigentlich kommt, den wir täglich trinken. Aber ich freu‘ mich glaub‘ ich wirklich am meisten auf die Expeditionen, weil das wird halt einfach schon der Hammer und wir werden so viel schlafen und essen können. Ja, auf die Expeditionen freu ich mich definitiv am meisten.

Paul: Ich freue mich auf alles!!!

Benni: Darauf, mal andere Speisen zu essen und zu trinken, und darüber hinaus die Natur zu erkunden.

Ella: Expeditionen auf jeden Fall!! Hab‘ so Bock drauf, San José wird auch mega wild und einfach generell auf Costa Rica, weil das mit der Gruppe richtig geil wird und auch mit Freunden ist es einfach super nice hier:)

Helene: Auf die Kaffeefarm auf jeden Fall und natürlich Expeditionen und boah, jede Nacht durchzuschlafen und einfach alles hier zu sehen.

Julian: Ich freue mich am meisten auf die Kaffeefarm. Warum? Weil Kaffee.

Fynn: Ich freue mich am meisten auf die Zeit mit der Reggie.

Isla Porvenir

Heute haben wir noch vor der Porvenir-Insel übernachtet. Da wir mal wieder vor Anker lagen, haben wir alle, wie immer, an Deck geschlafen. Leider hat es in der Nacht angefangen zu regnen und wir mussten wieder in unsere Betten umziehen.

Nach einem leckeren Frühstück haben wir das Schiff aufgeklart und unsere Beiboote ins Wasser gelassen. Volker (Kapitän), Frank (Steuermann), Jacob (Lehrer), Hannes und Toni haben sich dann mit dem kleinen Beiboot auf den Weg zur Einklarierung gemacht.

Währenddessen haben Julius und Helene angefangen, uns an Land zu shuttleln. Vor den Inseln sind überall flache Riffe, deswegen muss man beim Fahren aufpassen.

Auf der Insel angekommen, sind wir herumgelaufen, un die Locals haben uns wieder handgemachte Armbänder und Stoffe angeboten. Jacob konnte dort sogar noch ein Hemd ergattern. Alles ist schön bunt. 🌈

Das Dorf war sehr ordentlich und sauber. Man wurde mit freundlichen Gesichtern empfangen und aufgenommen. Überall sind kleine Kinder herumgerannt und kamen neugierig auf uns zu.

Wir hatten leider nur recht wenig Zeit auf der Insel, da wir heute noch weiterfahren mussten. Wir müssen schließlich am 10.01. in Bocas del Toro sein.

Während die ersten Leute schon wieder aufs Schiff gefahren wurden, haben Julius, Helene und ich noch mit ein paar Jugendlichen auf deren Basketballplatz ein wenig gespielt. Drei gegen drei haben wir in der Sonne geschwitzt. ⛹️‍♀️

Natürlich haben wir haushoch gewonnen 🥇 … 🧢

An Bord hat uns dann einer der auf der Thor Heyerdahl Mitfahrenden besucht. Nachdem wir ein bisschen mit ihm gequatscht haben, haben wir auch schon abgelegt. Wir haben dann erstmal alle Segel gesetzt, sind ein paar Manöver gefahren und haben weitergeschwitzt.

How to tack and wear

Today started really chill. Some of us slept outside on deck under the stars, but this time without getting wet. After breakfast, we all had to go on deck for all hands because we wanted to get moving.

Sail Training

Now we get to the part that took us the whole day: Tack and wear. But what is a tack? A tack is when you turn into the wind to change direction. A wear, on the other hand, is when you turn away from the wind.

You use both tactics to sail in the direction of the wind. The captain wanted us to practice it the entire morning until everybody had been at every station on his watch and everything went perfectly. Our watchleaders guided their groups the whole time.

After lunch, four of us got the chance to take on the position of the captain and give commands to everybody. Finally, the entire ship was sailed by students.

After all of this, we were finally where we wanted to be and could anchor next to a small island next to the Thor Heyerdahl. It didn’t take long before the first little boats came to us with locals, who showed us pretty bracelets, shirts, kitchen towels and other stuff.

It turned into a real flea market on the foredeck. They were all really nice and considerate. Some of the people from the Thor Heyerdahl also swam over to see the market.

After a long day of tacking and wearing, it was finally time for dinner. But because it was so hot in the mess room, we were allowed to eat on deck for the first time.

From our place, we had the perfect view to see some dolphins hunting flying fish. Both of them were really fast and jumped out of the water to catch the fleeing fish from each other.

After we watched the dolphins, we were allowed to watch a movie, so we decided on Pirates of the Caribbean. Special thanks to Litti and Nele, who made popcorn and smoothies for everyone.
