The first day back on board

Today we had our first full day back on board of our swimming home the Pelican of London. We have new cabins, new watches and also some new crew! Our medic, Claire, from the very beginning is back. Also Margo will join us tomorrow morning. Janice is our bosun now and Jih is her mate. Ali, our 1st mate will stay with us until the Azores. Now to the new cabins and watches:

Now you all know how the new Cabins and watches look like, but in my opinion the more interesting thing is how the people like their new place to live and the watches they are in.

The question is: “How do you like your new watch and cabin?”

Leah (Cabin 11a, Main (B)):

“I really like my watch because I have people of my friend group with me and my Cabin is ok, I would enjoy to have my own bathroom”

Ben (Cabin 6, Fore (A)):

“I like my new Cabin because Fred is in it and last time I had a very open bunk which was every time we got woken up the light was in my face but now I’m very happy with my bunk 😁😁. My watch is also great.”

Anna B. (Cabin 8, Mizzen (B)):

“I like my cabin because I like the people who are with me and my bed is really comfy with lots of pictures. My watch is much better than before but also a little bit random.”

Julius (Cabin 7, Main (A)):

“I like my new cabin, because my new bunk is better then my last one. The watch is better, because we are six people now and not five anymore, but it is also super random.

In my opinion the watches are also random and somehow they don‘t really make sense. My cabin is ok but I don‘t have Philipp in it anymore…that’s so sad. My bunk is bigger now and that’s really great, I love it.

Later the day

After tidying our new bunks and cabins we were brought ashore. Bocas del Toro is a little town in Panama. It has one street with bars, restaurants and some surf shops but not much more. I ate a very delicious Pad Thai in an Asian cuisine. At 6pm we were brought back to the ship.

Neues Jahr, neues Glück? Das könnte durchaus zutreffen, denn uns steht eine gewaltige gemeinsame Aufgabe bevor, die es bis Sainte Martin zu bewältigen gilt. 32 Schüler:innen sowie vier Watchleaderinnen müssen bis zum nächsten Land-Stopp das Level 1 des Lernbuchs abschließen.

Das OC Lernbuch und das Record Book

Ocean College hat unsere Gruppe am 22. Oktober, ganz zu Beginn unserer Busfahrt nach Sharpness, mit wertvollen Lernbüchern ausgestattet. Diese enthalten nicht nur Informationen über die beiden Schiffe Pelican of London und Regina Maris, eine Teilnehmerliste der beiden Schiffe, Feedback-Bögen und ausreichend Platz für Notizen oder Wochenreflexionen, sondern auch ein detailliertes dreistufiges System (Crew-Award, Leading Hand, Watchleader).

Das durchdachte Stufensystem soll uns in die Welt des Segelns einführen und zu echten Seefahrern ausbilden. Jede Stufe umfasst eine festgelegte Anzahl von Aufgaben, die zu erledigen sind. Es gibt 32 Aufgaben im ersten Level, 34 im zweiten und 58 im dritten.

Mit jeder Stufe wird die Herausforderung größer, und es wird mehr Wissen benötigt. Dennoch wird fairerweise nicht erwartet, dass wir alle drei Level bis zum Ende der Reise abschließen. So können einige die Aufgaben etwas entspannter angehen. Allerdings gibt es eine Frist für das erste Level.

In den letzten Tagen und Wochen haben die ersten Personen ihre Aufgaben abgeschlossen. Die Watchleaderinnen Luise, Jael, Marie und Rosa waren die Ersten. Der erste Schüler war Samuel, der dies zu Weihnachten schaffte. Im neuen Jahr sind dann auch Eva, Erik, Philipp, Noé und Friedrich fertig geworden.

Ich glaube, wir sind alle motiviert, das erste Level zu beenden und dann am zweiten Level zu arbeiten. Der Countdown läuft und wenn wir alle bis Saint Martin fertig sind, erwartet uns eine Überraschung als Belohnung.

Freizeit im Rig – Free-Climbing

Auf dem Atlantik hat sich Adam, unser Bosun, Zeit genommen, um mit uns die beiden Level für das Free-Climbing anzugehen. Dafür müssen wir auf dem Mizzen Mast einen Clove-Hitch binden, das Mast-Geheimnis ganz oben auf dem Main Mast herausfinden und im Bowsprit gewesen sein.

Ungefähr die Hälfte von uns konnte diesen Status bereits erreichen und den Vertrag vom Bosun unterzeichnen. Somit können wir fast zu jeder Tageszeit unsere Zeit im Bowsprit oder auf den drei verschiedenen Main-Mast-Plattformen genießen.

Wenn wir einen Rucksack zum Klettern mitnehmen, dürfen wir sogar Objekte wie Bücher, Musikboxen oder sogar unsere technischen Geräte mit ins Rigg nehmen. Die restlichen Schüler müssen jedoch nicht mehr lange warten, um Free-Climbing zu erreichen.

Schluss – Haircut-Reveal

Zum Schluss gibt es noch den heutigen Haircut-Reveal! Der heutige Kandidat ist… Trommelwirbel… JULIUS! Sein Buzzcut ist „crispy clean“. Hier ist das Interview mit ihm:

Wieso hast du dir einen Buzzcut geschnitten?

Weil er praktisch ist, das Duschen schneller geht und es der einfachste Weg ist, lange Haare loszuwerden.

Was willst du den Leuten daheim sagen?

Papa: Ich verstehe, warum du auch einen hast. Mama + Rest: Ich sehe genauso aus wie damals in der 5. Klasse und wenn ich wieder nach Hause komme, ist alles wieder nachgewachsen.

Ich persönlich werde mir zwar keinen Buzzcut schneiden, aber ich finde es sehr lustig und cool, dass solche Traditionen bei Ocean College entstehen. Wo sonst kann man wilden Ideen freien Lauf lassen als hier auf der Pelican?

Happy Birthday auch von Paulina 🙂 (Sie musste den Jungs versprechen, die Klappe zu halten und hat dann aus Loyalität beschlossen, mit mir zu gratulieren).

colonialism and the medina

Today, we had a chill day. After spending hours on an old bus the day before, our teachers surprised us with the opportunity for a long sleep. Everyone was happy that they could sleep until 10 o’clock in the morning. After a short morning meeting at the breakfast tables, we got to know the plans for the day:

Everyone had 1 1/2 hours of self-learning time, and afterward, group A had the honor of a history lesson with Tobi while the others were out on free shore leave. Afterwards, they switched activities. In the afternoon, when group A went out, we got ourselves some crepes and went for a walk around the medina. In the last 45 minutes, Philipp bought himself a Jeleba, a traditional Moroccan robe, to match Noé and Tobi. After the lessons and the free shore leave, we went to our restaurant to have dinner together.

SCHOOL!

In our history lessons today, we talked about colonialism and learned what the word means and when it happened for the first time.

Colonialism is defined as a group of people who take land away from other people without any diplomacy. The oppressors also try to change the indigenous culture and religion. Columbus, for example, wanted all of the native Americans to be Catholic. In Morocco, you notice the French influence in many ways. The first thing is that most Moroccans speak French as their first or second language, even though it isn’t an official language in Morocco. The second thing is that, for example, Essaouira is built in a French coastal style. It was designed by the guy who designed Saint-Malo in France. The food is also inspired by French cuisine. The pancakes we eat for breakfast every day are inspired by French crepes.

Good news 🗞

In the evening at dinner, Gregor gave us some updates about the upcoming days and the Pelican. Our sailing ship is still in Lisbon and is getting serviced, but it looks like we can return to our beautiful ship soon! Maybe it’ll change, so we’ll see. Until then, we enjoy our stay here in Essaouira with free shore leaves and SURFING! On the 5th of December, tomorrow, we will be going to surf 🏄‍♂️ the second time. We are all very excited. We will be split up into our Watches to go surfing, making a 2 1/2-hour shore leave and having some self-learning time as well.

Straight-Wave (white) surfing how-to:

1. Book a surf lesson at a surf shop so that a local guy can teach you the basics.
2. Take your board to the beach and repeat your knowledge in the sand.
3. Go into the water and spot a nice breaking wave 🌊. Wait until it comes close to you.
4. Stand in the water with your back facing the wave and jump on your board with your chest touching the middle part of the board.
5. Make some nice deep paddle moves to catch the speed of the incoming wave.
6. If you feel the wave carrying you, push yourself, with your hands close to your chest, up and stand up on the board. Your front foot should be around the middle of the board to help your balance.
7. Enjoy the wave you just caught and pump a little bit with your knees to stay in the flow.
