Minion-Invasion in Calais

Heute Vormittag hatten wir vor, uns die Stadt Calais anzuschauen. Der Plan war, uns um 10:00 Uhr im Messroom zu treffen. Als wir eine halbe Stunde zu spät das Hauptdeck betraten, mussten wir feststellen, dass das Wetter noch schlechter war, als wir dachten. Jeder, der seine Ölkleidung nicht trug, wurde zurückgeschickt, um sie anzuziehen, worüber die betreffenden Personen anschließend erleichtert waren.

Währenddessen halfen Jonna und ich (Luisa) Jakob mit der Gangway, die in der Nacht hochgeklappt werden musste, um am Schiff zu bleiben. Als wir schließlich alle in neongelben Kapuzenjacken, die uns laut Franka wie eine Invasion von Minions aussehen ließen, loszogen, mussten wir zwar keinen Menschen, aber vielen Wasserpfützen ausweichen. Wenn man nicht ausweichen wollte, sprang man einfach in die Pfützen und bespritzte die anderen, die ohnehin schon nass waren.

Unser Weg führte zunächst einen Hügel hinauf zu einem Leuchtturm, wo Ben nach allen „French Guys“ rief. Damit meinte er alle, die Französisch lernen, und es kam ein lautes „Liberté“, also „Freiheit“, als Antwort. Ein Französisch sprechender Minion las dann einen Infotext vor, den ein anderer übersetzte. Wer das jeweils war, war jedoch nicht immer einfach herauszufinden, da wir alle bis auf die Nasenspitzen in unsere Jacken eingemummelt waren. Das gleiche Spektakel spielte sich auch bei einem alten Telegraphenturm aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, einer Kirche und einem Kunstmuseum ab. Ehrlich gesagt, hörte ich immer weniger zu, da der laute Wind und der starke Regen es schwierig machten, zuzuhören, aber andererseits auch eine schöne Ablenkung waren. So betrachtete ich die einzelnen Windböen sehr genau und analysierte sie.

Als wir gegen diese Böen ankämpfen mussten, schauten uns die wenigen Passanten merkwürdig an und immer wieder sah man Menschen aus den Fenstern, die uns beobachteten. Wahrscheinlich wunderten sie sich, was diese seltsame Gruppe bei eisiger Kälte draußen zu suchen hatte. Meine Taktik, um die Kälte zu vertreiben und gegen den Wind anzukämpfen, waren Weihnachtslieder. Franka, Kris, Fee (Lilia) und ich gingen Hand in Hand, triefend nass und sangen „In der Weihnachtsbäckerei“, auf dem Weg zu einem Supermarkt. Dieser wurde von allen 36 Schüler:innen und drei Lehrer:innen gestürmt, um die Süßigkeitenregale zu plündern.

Hungrige Minions! Auf dem Rückweg zum Schiff öffneten sich auf wundersame Weise bereits die ersten Packungen mit Gebäck. Trotz der acht Schichten, die ich trug, begann ich zu frieren. Daher war ich sehr erleichtert, als wir uns schließlich alle in den Messroom drängten.

Nachmittag

Zurück auf dem Schiff haben wir uns erst einmal aufgewärmt. Da es bereits 12:45 Uhr war, gab es Mittagessen. Heute gab es Kartoffelpüree mit Gemüsesauce. Danach hatten wir etwas Freizeit, in der sich alle ausruhten. Viele legten sich einfach in der Messe auf die Sitzbänke und schliefen. Ella und ich malten noch mit meinen Aquarellfarben und es entstanden schöne Bilder.

Einige schrieben Tagebuch und es wurde viel Wizard gespielt. Um 18:00 Uhr trafen wir uns, um unsere drei Pathways Economic, Media und Science zu besprechen. Für die halbjährige Segelreise habe ich letzteres gewählt. Unser Leiter im Pathway ist Ben und er hat die drei Hauptthemen mit uns besprochen: Secci Disc, Beach-Clean-up und Mikroplastik-Strandkartierung.

Die Secci Disc ist eine einfache Konstruktion aus einer schwimmenden Scheibe und einem Gewicht, die den Phytoplanktongehalt im Wasser messen kann. Die Daten können dann in eine App eingetragen und verglichen werden. Diese Messungen werden wir auf unserer Reise mehrmals durchführen.

Beach-Cleanups werden wir voraussichtlich auch öfter machen. Dabei nehmen wir uns einen Teil des Strandes vor und sammeln den Müll auf. Wir werden auch versuchen, die einzelnen Plastikteile zu identifizieren und anhand einer Tabelle herauszufinden, um welche Art von Plastik es sich handelt.

Die Microplastik-Strandkartierung wird ähnlich ablaufen: Man nimmt sich einen Quadratmeter Strand vor und siebt ihn mit verschiedenen Aufsätzen durch. Danach ordnet man die einzelnen Plastikteile in eine von fünf Gruppen ein. Auch diesen Prozess werden wir vermutlich mehrmals durchführen.

Zum Abendessen gab es Salat und Brot mit Tomatenbutter und wir ließen den Abend mit Wizard und anderen Spielen ausklingen.

Luisa: An die England-Leute: Wir haben in der Nacht eine Fähre von Calais nach Dover fahren sehen und es ist wirklich cool, Calais auch einmal bei Tageslicht zu sehen! An die Paris-Gang: Ich habe es endlich wieder nach Frankreich geschafft!!!!!!

Tea Day

The other day during a normal, quite average dinner, well, just as normal as any dinner on the Regina Maris can be, we stumbled upon the question of what time of day tea, kept in a thermos flask, has the best drinking temperature.

So now you might be a bit confused as to how we came upon that question, as it isn’t really something you discuss over a plate of couscous. Let us set the scene for you:

A normal dinner on the Regina Maris:

Luis pouring himself a cup of tea from a thermos flask that has been standing since lunch: “Mhhh, I think the tea is going to be way too hot to drink.” He continued to add a small splash of water to cool it down. “Oh sh*t, now it’s way too cold” (making a sad face).

Lilia, at the same time sitting next to Luis: “I think the tea is at a perfect drinking temperature right now.” Lilia continued to drink the tea without adding anything to cool it, and it turned out to be the perfect mix between hot and cold.

Luis turning his head to Lilia: “I really regret adding the water. I thought it would be perfect; now it’s just way too cold. It wasn’t even standing that long.” Luis continued to drink his cold tea.

And that, dear readers, is how we came to the burning question: At what time of day does tea have the best drinking temperature when kept in a thermos flask?

Our hypothesis is as follows:

We think that drinking the tea midday will be the best-tempered because it had enough time to cool.

Execution:

We asked four different people, including teachers, fellow students, and crew members, about their opinion on the temperature and to rate it on a scale from one to ten. We both tried it alongside them and rated it as well.

Our own opinion:

We personally think that the tea had the best drinking temperature at around 07:00 pm. The tea wasn’t too hot nor too cold. It wasn’t a perfect ten because for it to have been perfect, it would have needed to be a little bit warmer. In conclusion, our hypothesis was proven false; we found the tea too hot at 01:00 pm because the thermos flask kept the tea warmer than expected.

Conclusion:

To conclude, most people prefer their tea quite warm and the best time for drinking it if kept in a thermos flask appears to be around 01:00 pm. It also appears that both of us are the odd ones out, as we both prefer the tea to be colder than those interviewed. So, if you ever need to serve a stranger tea, fill up your thermos flask at around 08:00 am and let it sit for around five hours.
We sincerely hope that you take our advice to heart and enjoy a nice cup of tea tonight. Lots of love from some random harbor in France.

Bananenbrot und Halloween an Bord

Bananenbrot

Da der vorherige Tag durch die ganze Spuckerei eher negativ verlaufen ist, haben sich Luis, Leopold, Tobias und Darja entschieden, aus alten Bananen Bananenbrot zu backen. Nach dem Mittagessen gab es das Bananenbrot als Nachtisch, was die bedrückte Stimmung vom Vortag ausglich.

Bananenbrot Rezept:

Rezept für ein Brot:

3 Bananen
80 ml neutrales Öl
110g brauner Zucker
2 Eier
200g Weizenmehl
3 TL Backpulver
1 Prise Salz
1 Vanilleschote
1 Prise Zimt
etwas Butter für die Form

Zubereitung:

1.  Bananen zu Brei verarbeiten.
2.  Alle Zutaten in eine Schüssel geben und gut verrühren.
3.  Ofen auf 160 Umluft vorheizen.
4.  Kastenform mit Mehl und Butter einfetten.
5.  Teig in Kastenform geben.
6.  Kuchen in den Ofen geben.
7.  45 Minuten backen.
8.  Abkühlen lassen und genießen.

Noch ein Deep-Clean

Die Seekrankheit hat ihre Spuren hinterlassen: Der Messraum war voll mit Zwieback-Krümeln, an Deck lagen die letzten Spuren von dem, was der Magen hergegeben hatte und die Heads (Toiletten) und Showers hatte auch niemand in den letzten Stunden geputzt. Das hieß: Deep-Clean für alle und alles. Diesmal, mit Anweisung von unserem First Mate, leise und ohne Musik.

Der Tag endete damit, dass fast alle, deren Kabinen nicht zufriedenstellend aufgeräumt waren, Martijn mit einem Trick oder einem Treat bestechen mussten, um keine gelbe Karte und somit keinen Free-Shore-Relief zu bekommen. Fun Fact: Er hat in einer der Kabinen eine UV-Lampe gefunden, somit können wir jetzt all unseren Schmutz (oder den vergangener Jahre) noch besser sehen.

Halloween an Bord

Es ist der 31.10.2023, Halloween steht vor der Gangway. Natürlich wollten wir das nicht verpassen, deshalb hatten wir uns dazu entschieden, uns zu verkleiden und einen Film zu schauen. Die Lehrkräfte hatten die Idee einer Preisverleihung für das beste Kostüm. Wohlgemerkt: Wir hatten alle keine Kostüme dabei. Das Beste am Abend waren die Kostüme.

Es gab unglaublich viele lustige und kreative Ideen: Von einem Cowboy auf seinem Pferd (Justus, Mattis, Onno), mehreren Klopapier-Mumien mit ihrer Archäologin (Emma, Mascha, Margaux, Ella, Jane), Poseidon und Neptun (Stella, Lilia), einem Alman, einem Horror-Medic mit Migräne und Erkältung (Nicole, Aurelia), einem Maschinisten (Julius) bis hin zu einem Mörder im Kleiderschrank (Aurelius). Der Kreativität war keine Grenze gesetzt. Mit dabei waren Mehlgesichter, Kunstblut aus roter Beete, Panzertape-Masken, Fischschwänze aus Netzen, echte Mehlwunden und schwarz angemalte Gesichter.

Natürlich sollten die besten Kostüme nicht leer ausgehen. Dabei wurden die Lehrkräfte sehr kreativ und hatten die Preise so gestaltet, dass sie uns den Alltag etwas erleichtern, z. B. die Übernahme von einem Tagesbericht, einer Harbour-Watch oder einem Deep-Clean. Entschieden wurde per Applausometer. Der 1. Platz ging an Max und Moritz (Adrian, Joshua). Sie wollten, dass eine Lehrkraft den Deep-Clean für sie übernimmt. Der 2. Platz ging an unseren Cowboy auf seinem Pferd. Einer aus der Gruppe kann sich den nächsten einen Tagesbericht schreiben lassen, und der 3. Platz ging an den Mörder im Schrank, für ihn übernimmt eine Lehrkraft die Harbour-Watch.

Der Abend endete gemütlich mit dem Film (T)Raumschiff Surprise. Dazu gab es die restlichen Getränke von der früheren Karaoke-Party. Die Süßigkeiten, die Martijn eingesammelt hatte, wurden gleich weiter verwendet und während des Films aufgefuttert.

The Walking Dead – Seasickness

Today, nearly everyone experienced seasickness, even though we only had tiny waves of 1 – 1.5 meters (the crew had a great time laughing at us). Most people were spread out over the deck, lying down and getting sick, and those who were feeling alright had to run around taking care of everyone by bringing them water and bread as well as sailing the ship. This led to some people doing watch for 10 hours while others slept.

Perspective of a non-sick person (Justus):

Once we left Scheveningen harbor early this morning, the waves hit us quickly and some people started to feel dizzy. Myself and some others of the Charlie watch decided to hit the bunks before the waves hit us. Once we woke up for lunch and went up to check on the situation, we saw that there were already a lot of people getting sick and decided to lend a hand to the Bravo watch, who had most of their students knocked down with seasickness. We were given duties like setting the schooner, keeping a lookout, steering the ship, and when we had a free hand, looking after everyone who needed something. After carrying on throughout the day without a proper break, we started to bring people down to the Messroom or their cabins to enable them to get some sleep. The wind and waves calmed down overnight, which enabled all of us to get some sleep, and only a few had rare throw-ups.

Perspective of a seasick person (Kris):

I was one of the majority of people who got seasick. Some got hit by seasickness really hard, and others were luckier and felt okay or didn’t get seasick at all. Unfortunately, I was one of the people who got quite strongly seasick. There were people who were even more seasick, but I can only write about my own experience.

In the morning, everything looked fine…

In the morning, I was really excited but had respect for the waves and wind. The first half-hour was surprisingly fun for me. I stood on the foredeck with Luisa and Aurelius and watched the waves and had fun with the rolling of the ship.

…but then the seasickness hit

But then slowly, the seasickness hit me. At first, it wasn’t that hard, and I just didn’t feel that well and was a bit dizzy, so I sat down and looked at the horizon. That is supposed to help, but for me, it didn’t. As time passed, I saw a few people getting up and hanging over the railing, and after about 15 minutes after the sickness began, it was my turn to throw up for the first time. It was really disgusting, but fortunately, Luisa and Johanna were helping the people experiencing seasickness. They gave me water and stood next to me for emotional support. When you are seasick and throw up, you have like 10 minutes afterward where you feel slightly better. I used this time to try and drink some water as well as eat something. It is really important to drink and eat enough so you have enough energy to keep going. Everybody who was seasick now has figured out a way to reduce the sickness or at least deal with it. For me, the best way to reduce and overcome seasickness is lying down and sleeping.

Watch when seasick

When I had a watch at 1 pm, I got on the poop deck and instantly lay down. There wasn’t enough space on the benches, so I just lay on the floor. I figured out that the best position to lie is close to the middle of the ship and also athwartships. When you thought that the day couldn’t get worse… it can. It was not only wavy, it was also freezing cold. The problem is that I couldn’t go inside and get something warmer because underdeck, seasickness feels even worse. So I just lay down on the freezing floor for 4 hours. You could always see people getting up to puke and others helping the sick ones. Fortunately for me, I only had to puke one more time on my watch and also had like 10 minutes where I was feeling quite good and could stand up. At this point, I really want to thank a few people who didn’t have a watch but took over our watch because almost everyone from my watch (Bravo Watch) was seasick and lying on the floor. So thank you, Adrian, Joshua, Jule, Justus, Onno, Mattis, Aurelia, Max, and Tobias for taking over our watch. I also want to thank everyone who helped the seasick people in general, like Franka, Luis, Luisa, Max, and Mats.

Sleeping with seasickness

I was really glad when my watch finally ended at 5 pm and went to bed. But as already mentioned, seasickness gets worse when you are underdeck. So Lenara and I decided to sleep in the Messroom, as well as a few other people. We got down and tried to get out of our jackets, trousers, and life vests as quickly as possible. As I was getting undressed, I felt the sickness getting worse and rushed to one of the benches, where I lay down. Lenara wasn’t that sick, so she grabbed a bucket (just in case) and a pillow. We lay down and tried to overcome the seasickness. After some time, Lizzy (Elisabeth) and Aurelia came to us with some Zwieback and some water. That really helped me a lot. After that, I just tried to eat some soup and get some sleep. The Messroom is not a quiet place to sleep because you always hear someone going around or puking into a bucket. Still, I managed to get a bit of sleep until my next watch. The next watch was technically on the next day, but for me, it still counts as the same day. The sleep really helped, so the night watch wasn’t that bad. Some still had to throw up, but the majority was feeling alright except for the freezing cold weather. Luckily, we saw a beautiful night sky which made us all very excited for the Atlantic crossing. In the morning, most of us were quite alright and not really seasick anymore. Just really, really tired.

Auf geht’s!

Eigentlich hatten wir nach dem Frühstück alle die Erwartung, dass es losgeht. Ging es auch, allerdings nicht aufs Meer, sondern nach Den Haag, um eine kleine Stadtrallye zu machen. Mit „Actionbound“ (einer App auf den Lehrer-Handys) ging es quer durch die Stadt. Dabei haben wir Kirchen, Botschaften und Stadttore gesehen, Aufgaben gelöst, so manche Niederländer angesprochen und ausgefragt. Nachdem wir in Kleingruppen unterwegs waren, haben wir uns mittags vor der (ein oder anderen) deutschen Botschaft getroffen, um gemeinsam zurück zum Schiff zu gehen.

Nachdem es heute kein Mittagessen gab, haben wir Pizza bestellt, auf die wir allerdings erstmal noch drei Stunden warten mussten. Das lag allerdings nicht an der Pizza, sondern an uns.

Überraschung?

Denn, als wir auf die Regina zurückkamen, empfingen uns Michael (unser Kapitän) und Martijn mit der glorreichen Nachricht, dass der restliche Nachmittag aus einem Deepclean besteht.

Kurz zur Erklärung:

Im Optimalfall werden Toiletten und Duschen morgens und abends und die Messe (unser Ess- und Wohnzimmer) nach jedem Gebrauch gereinigt. Dazu gibt es dann, bei Wachbetrieb, die Happy Hour sonntags und ein Deepclean (also ein vertieftes Reinigen) vor Einlaufen in einen Hafen. Falls die Crew allerdings die Notwendigkeit dazu sieht (aufgrund von Unordnung, Verschmutzungen etc.), kann sie jederzeit ein Deepclean veranlassen. So war es heute der Fall.

How to Deepclean

Wir haben uns also aufgeteilt und gefühlt jeden Millimeter des Schiffes gereinigt. Das heißt also nicht nur in den Kabinen den Boden zu saugen, sondern den kompletten Bereich unter den Betten auszuräumen, zu ordnen, aufzuräumen und dann zu saugen. Dazu müssen unsere Fächer ordentlich sein, und die Waschbecken in den Kabinen ebenfalls. Das ist allerdings noch nicht alles, denn wenn man das Tetris unter dem Bett erstmal gelöst hat und meint fertig zu sein, kommt Martijn mit seinem weißen Tuch. Er findet trotz allem noch irgendwo Dreck in der letzten Ecke, was bedeutet, dass man dann alles nochmal neu machen muss. Denn nur wenn das Tuch wieder weiß aus der Ecke kommt, ist alles sauber und der „Cabin Check“ bestanden. 🙂 Nach drei Stunden haben wir es dann endlich geschafft, wir haben alle Türkanten, Oberseiten von Lampen, Abflüsse und Latten des Lattenrosts geputzt und kontrollieren lassen.

„Lost and found“

Dann gab es endlich für alle Essen und danach die erste Versteigerung der „Lost-and-Found-Box“. Hier gilt: Wer über die Woche etwas verloren hat, das in der Box gelandet ist, kann es am Sonntag für 0,50 € zurückkaufen. Wer seinen Gegenstand nicht mehr wiedererkennt oder loswerden will, kann es für alle zur Auktion freigeben. Dieses Problem bekommt man aber auch nur, wenn man sein Zeug länger als fünf Minuten unbeaufsichtigt irgendwo rumliegen lässt. Das soll uns dazu bringen, immer alles aufzuräumen, was sogar auf einem Schiff noch wichtiger ist als sonst irgendwo, denn bei Wellengang fliegen gerne mal alle Sachen von Tischen usw. Das Geld für die verlorenen Dinge geht übrigens nicht an ein Privatkonto, sondern an die Bordkasse, welche dann später dazu genutzt wird, uns Schüler:innen ein Eis oder Ähnliches zu bezahlen. Es kommt also allen zugute, wenn etwas verloren geht 🙂

Alles in allem kann man sagen, wir haben heute viel gelernt. Wir haben uns genauer mit Den Haag beschäftigt und gelernt, RICHTIGES DEEP CLEANING zu machen, denn durch die Art, wie Martijn zum Beispiel nach Dreck sucht, wissen wir jetzt besser, wie wir die Räume auf dem Schiff in Zukunft sauber machen.

Knot interested?

We are still stuck in Scheveningen because of the brutal winds in the English Channel that even blow against us. So we used the spare time for a couple of lessons in seamanship. The ones who couldn’t climb up yesterday got the chance to do it today. Marie and Ben gave a lesson about splicing and Mathieu taught us how to tie the bowline, sheet bend, figure of eight, round turn & two half hitches, clove hitch and the reef knot. For those who wondered why they are even here 😉 Mathieu showed them the hangman’s knot in the mess room. To make this daily report a bit more interactive we thought that we will teach some of them to you.

Bowline:

The bowline is one of the most important knots on a ship. To tie the knot, follow these steps:

Make a loop.
Take one end of the rope and
put it through the loop, coming
from the back.
Around the rope and back into
the loop.
At the end, pull at the rope on the
positions which are marked

There are two sentences that can help you to understand the instructions better, which are:

1: You form a lake, a snake comes out of the lake and goes to a tree. Then it sees you and gets scared due to your ugliness, turns around the tree and goes back into the lake.

2: You open a bar, a man comes out of it, running to a tree and behind (around) it, vomits and returns to the bar.

We believe the other knots are easy to learn if you follow the pictures that are attached, because it´s an easy step by step tutorial.

We didn’t spend the whole day tying knots, we also listened to Max, who had his presentation about “Techniken der Videodokumentation auf Reisen – Was macht einen guten Videotagesbericht aus?”. After the presentation had ended, we joined our “groups of interest”, which were as following: arts, sports, dance, music and fishing.

And there was a great message today: Michael said we would leave tomorrow. We all were glad about that because we want to get away from this place. Not because it´s not nice here in Scheveningen, but we would like to sail, being on the ocean.

Wo sollten wir eigentlich all unsere Sachen unterbringen? Das haben wir uns vor der Reise auch gefragt, deshalb haben wir dieses Thema für unseren ersten Tagesbericht ausgewählt. Wir haben eine Menge Gepäck auf das Schiff mitgebracht, das irgendwo verstaut werden muss. Im Allgemeinen gilt das Prinzip: Wer am besten quetscht und beim Verstauen der Sachen kreativ ist, hat schon mal einen Vorteil.

In (fast) jeder Kabine gibt es Stauraum unter den Betten und einen “Schrank” mit einem Fach pro Person. Um den Platz unter dem Bett effizient zu nutzen, gibt es eine Kiste für jeden, in der wir beispielsweise unsere Kleidung lagern. Der sogenannte Schrank, der eigentlich nur ein großes Fach ist, kann ebenfalls befüllt werden. Das hat allerdings den Nachteil, dass man ihn nicht schließen kann und bei Seegang manchmal Sachen herausfallen. Außerdem ist er etwas unpraktisch, da man schwer an den hintersten “Kram” herankommt.

Unter dem Waschbecken können wir unsere Kulturtaschen verstauen. Wenn nicht genug Platz ist, gibt es auch die Möglichkeit, Dinge (zum Beispiel mit einem Schuh-Organizer) an die Wand zu kleben oder einfach ans Fußende des Bettes zu legen. Dadurch kann es in den Kojen (Betten) allerdings ziemlich eng werden. Der Vorteil ist, dass wir so unfreiwillig zur Ordnung gezwungen werden.

Was wir heute gemacht haben

Da wir heute einen weiteren Tag in Scheveningen verbracht haben, hatten wir genug Zeit, um weiteres Seamanship zu lernen. Wir wurden in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt: Eine Gruppe hat gelernt, Seile zu spleißen und die andere ist auf den Mast geklettert.

Spleißen

Beim Spleißen wird in ein Ende des Seils eine stabile Schlaufe geflochten. Solch ein Seil wird unter anderem beim Segelpacken gebraucht.

Auf und Ab

Eines unserer Segel, das Course, musste aufgrund des kommenden Starkwinds neu gepackt werden. Zwei von uns (Samuel und Greta) sind mit Mats (Assistent) und Mathieu (Crew) in den Mast geklettert und haben es neu gefaltet. Danach sind auch die anderen zur Übung den Mast hoch- und runtergeklettert. Trotz des etwas ungemütlichen Wetters haben alle die Aufgabe gut gemeistert.

Sleeping, Cleaning, Killing

At 10 o’clock sharp, the big game started. At every corner, we now fear a killer waiting for us. Yesterday, each of us picked a name of the person we have to kill, an object we have to hand that person in order to kill him/her and a place where we have to hand the object over. An example from the last year: Someone had to hand a hairdryer to the cook, who obviously does not climb on the mast. (Don’t worry, we are not going to give any accurate examples 😉

We don’t know who is dead yet, but we are eagerly awaiting the winner 🙂

Just another deep clean…

Before the game started, though, we learned the difference between cleaning and deep cleaning. We had to get the sand away, which, as you can imagine, hides in every corner of the ship. Additionally, we had to tidy up and clean our cabins to get a free shore leave. Luckily, we all managed.

From 3-7 pm, we had free shore leave and we split up into different groups. One group decided to visit the famous Christmas shopping place we discovered two days ago. They also made a short visit to the beach and ate some fries due to “starving.” (That’s what they told us at least)

Another group went running 6 km. I think the opinions on that run are very different according to who we ask, but generally, it was really refreshing to do sports again and to be able to move more than just 48m up and down the ship. We also discovered an enormous guitar store; it was great!

The most important thing on board: SLEEP

In the afternoon, we interviewed a few people about how they feel about the current sleeping situation and as you can imagine, it is kind of hard to get sleep when we have night watches. Here are the results:

Stella: She gets enough sleep when she is not on duty and the worst watch according to her is 4-6 am. But she is still emotionally less tired than at home.

Julius: He likes the 0-2 am watch the best and he thinks watch is really fun, also because there is always something happening in the harbor. According to him, the 2-4 am watch is the worst because of the short sleeping periods.

Kris: In the morning, she is really tired, but it gets better during the day. The best watch is 6-8 am because you get to wake people up (haha) and you get to sleep through the night.

Jane (Watchleader): She is not tired at all and has the perfect amount of energy for the whole day. (No wonder until now she was lucky not to be scheduled for harbor watch) 😉

We asked Mathieu (our 1st mate) about his experience with night watches and he gave us some tips and insights: He really likes night watches because they are cozy and the captain is not awake;) The 1-5 am watch is really lucky because they get to have picnics and hot chocolate. And there may be a sneaky night party as well 🙂 Generally, if you want to have a good night’s sleep, even if you have a watch, you should go to bed early, get at least eight hours of sleep and do a lot of napping. (By the way, he randomly started singing the tips when we asked for advice).

From us (Franka and Emma): Well, we now know to use every single minute to sleep! The funny thing is that through the interviews we found out that people may be physically very tired but emotionally less so than at home. Since we didn’t really start to sail yet, the sleeping situation is not too bad, but we’re sure that there is going to be an update very soon… 🙂

You must be wondering how we got this motivated to actually clean everything. Well, the secret is a little reward we are very much looking forward to 🙂 In the Messroom, we have tons of Sodas, chips, and sweets for the party tonight just waiting to be eaten by us 🙂

Heute war unser zweiter Tag im Hafen von Scheveningen. Bis auf das Wechseln des Liegeplatzes sind wir leider nicht weitergefahren. Stattdessen haben sich die Crew und die Lehrer:innen einen spannenden Tagesplan ausgedacht, um den Tag zu füllen. Außer einem kurzen Ausflug an den Strand haben wir Grundlagen zum Wetter und zum Segeln bekommen. Vor allem haben wir die Namen von den Seilen und Segeln gelernt.

Mathieu hat uns alle Seile und ihre Funktionen erklärt.

1: En: Halyard; De: Fall
Das Fall dient dazu, das Segel nach oben zu ziehen und sicherzustellen, dass es dort bleibt. Somit muss es gelöst werden, um das Segel wieder nach unten zu lassen.

2: En: Sheet; De: Schot
Die Schot dient dazu, das Segel entsprechend dem Wind einzustellen.

3: En: Downhaul; De: Niederholer
Der Niederholer ist die einzige Möglichkeit, das Segel wieder nach unten zu bekommen. Um das Segel wieder zu setzen, muss der Niederholer gelöst und nachgegeben werden.

4: En: Jibe preventer; De: Bullenstander
Der Bullenstander dient dazu, das Segel bzw. den Baum (Boom) davon abzuhalten, unvorhersehbar von einer Seite auf die andere zu schlagen und Personen zu verletzen oder ungewollte Manöver einzuleiten.

Wetterprobleme

Martijn hat uns den Grund erklärt, warum wir noch im Hafen liegen.
Der Grund, warum wir noch in Scheveningen liegen und wahrscheinlich noch ein paar Tage bleiben, ist, dass ein Unwetter auf uns zukommt. Dieses bringt starke Winde und hohe Wellen mit sich, denen wir noch nicht gewachsen sind, insbesondere in den ersten Wochen. Nebenbei haben wir gezeigt bekommen, was man aus den verschiedenen Karten ablesen kann.

Kennenlernspiele am Strand

Da wir immer noch im Hafen liegen, hatten unsere Lehrer*innen sich überlegt, was wir “unternehmen” können. Daraufhin sind wir alle zusammen zum Strand gelaufen, um verschiedene Kennenlernspiele zu spielen. Unter anderem haben wir Tik Tak Toe im Sand, Knotenspiele (mit verknoteten Personen, nicht Seilen) und ein Spiel gespielt, bei dem wir uns zum Beispiel ohne zu sprechen nach der Größe sortiert haben. Dabei hat es geregnet, es war sehr nass und alle haben gefroren.

Trotzdem war dieser Tag, wie bisher immer, ein erlebnisreicher Tag und wir freuen uns immer mehr auf die Weiterfahrt.

First Deep Clean and Free Shore Leave

Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning!

Right after breakfast, we started the day with the first deep clean of our beloved Queen of the Oceans. The watch teams had to clean various areas of the ship. At some point, we just started helping wherever it was needed.

A little bit of chaos

Alpha Watch began by cleaning the heads (toilets) and showers. It all started a bit chaotically because we couldn’t find the cleaning agents and towels at first and weren’t sure how to start. Finally, after a little while, we figured it out. Even though some of us were really shocked by how much hair and dirt can collect in the drain, we managed to complete the task.

It’s mopping time

At the same time, Bravo Watch was trying to clean the mess room, but they had some trouble getting everyone to move out so they could mop the floor. Finally, it was „mopping time“ (and yes, we had a good laugh about that quote from Thomas). Meanwhile, Charlie Watch was busy cleaning the deck. One thing is certain: they did a fantastic job, even if they did shower everyone who went out of the front door while cleaning the Poop Deck (the deck at the back of the ship). From our perspective, everyone did an excellent job, and we are very proud of ourselves!

First free shore leave in The Hague

After lunch, Thomas announced that we were going to have our first free shore leave today. We were all very excited to have the chance to explore The Hague on our own, and we left the ship full of anticipation. Some of us took the tram, while others decided to walk.

HFC and KFC

After our group (Joshua, Aurelius, Aurelia, Julius, and Adrian) took the tram into the city, we searched for something to eat. Right in front of us, we saw HFC (Halal Fried Chicken). We initially went in there until we spotted KFC about ten meters away. So we switched from HFC to KFC and got our food there. After that, we took the tram back and headed to the beach. The wind was perfect, the view was great, and you could see the sunshine through the clouds. With KIZ playing at full volume, it was absolutely amazing.

The results when you leave without a plan

Our group, including Jane, Mascha, Emma, and I (Darja), decided to walk and just follow our mood, which led us to discover the biggest sunglasses in the Netherlands (in our opinion). We also accidentally found what we would call a Thai Village, entered a Christmas paradise, and indulged in a lot of waffles.

It all started when we were heading to the beach. Suddenly, Emma spotted some big blue sunglasses standing randomly on the beach, and we fell in love with them. So, we all ended up taking a close look and some photos.

Then, out of nowhere, Jane came up with the idea of searching for some waffles since we all wanted a snack. Happy with our plan, we started walking toward the nearest waffle-serving restaurant. But just a few minutes later, we had to change direction because we saw a cozy-looking, tiny street that was magically attracting us. Suddenly, everything around us had something to do with Thailand, including Thai massages, restaurants, and flags. We still do not know why, but it did not bother us because we found some Stroopwafels there. Highly recommended!

Christmas paradise and waffles number Two

Fueled by our little snack, we continued walking. Right in front of our destination, OMA TOOS, we had to change our direction one last time due to a Christmas shop. We all wanted to see what was inside, so we ended up entering a Christmas paradise. If you need any kind of Christmas decoration, you will probably find it there. We all got really excited and got into the Christmas spirit, even though it is still October. Eventually, the anticipation of the waffles won, and we finally made it to OMA TOOS.
